Hayden

William E. "Bill" Hayden, age 58, of Saltville, died Sunday, March 23, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of the Light House Baptist Church, Saltville.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hayden; one daughter, Barbara Wassum, Saltville; one stepdaughter, Kim Surber, Saltville; one brother, James Hayden, Saltville; four sisters, Mary E. Mabe, Plum Branch, S.C., Darlene Fowler, Halifax, N.C., Betty S. Dillow and Alice Ratcliffe, both of Saltville; one grandson, Charlie Wassum; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, March 26, at 11 a.m. in the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Benny Frye and the Rev. Danny Frye officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Ihrig

Irvin Harold Ihrig, age 92, died Sunday, March 23, 1997 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Ihrig was a native of Kentucky. He was a minister administrator in the Seventh Day Adventist Church from which he retired in 1970 to Florida. After retirement, he remained active in the church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served aboard the USS Tennessee.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Brown Ihrig, Appomattox; two sons, Harold I. Ihrig, Lebanon, Tenn., and Pastor Ronald E. Ihrig, Marion; one brother, Edwin M. Ihrig, Roanoke; one sister, Doris Iviatte, Washugal, Wash.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m. in the Appomattox Seventh Day Adventist Church with Derek Mustow, Herbert Broeckle and Orville Driscall officiating. Interment will be held later in Melbourne, Fla.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jones

Joseph E. "Gene" Jones, age 80, died Saturday, March 22, 1997 at his home in Marion. Mr. Jones was the owner of the J.E. Jones Trucking Company.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah Weaver Jones of Marion; one daughter, Phyllis York of Swampscott, Mass.; one son, Alvin Jones of Marion; one sister, Flossie Anderson of Marion; one brother, Willis Jones of Marion; three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. in Seaver- Brown Chapel with Minister Troy Allen officiating. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Marshall

April Pruitt Marshall, age 32, died Friday, March 21, 1997 from injuries received in an automobile accident in Newton, N.C.

She is survived by two daughters, Brittney Faith Marshall and Bethany Fawn Marshall, both of Newton, N.C.; her father and mother, Larry and Mary Pruitt Jr., Groseclose; one brother, Larry Pruitt Jr., Newton, N.C.; her grandfather, Gothard Teaster of Statesville, N.C.; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Wassum Cemetery.

Sheffield

Walter Frank Sheffield Sr., age 72, died Saturday, March 22, 1997 in the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Surber Sheffield.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Don Musser of Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Joyce Sheffield of Marion, and Frank and Karen Sheffield of Herndon; three grandchildren, Sara Lyn Musser of Marion, Dwayne Sheffield of Chilhowie, Dana Hounshell and husband Mike of Rich Valley; two great-grandchildren, Eric and Justin Sheffield; three brothers, Bill Sheffield of Dresden, Tenn., Carl Sheffield of Bristol, and Jimmy Lee Sheffield of Rileyville; five sisters: Ann Henderson, Damascus; Betty Cox, Columbus, Ohio; Georgia Kaser, Gahanna, Ohio; Mary Gray Davenport, Carolina Beach, N.C.; and Helen Jo Sexton, Stonesville, N.C.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring, where full military rites were conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Emmons

Jane P. Emmons, 69, widow of John F. Emmons, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in Greenville, Ohio.

She was born in Smyth County to the late Reese and Mattie Goodman Coley. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

She worked for many years as a waitress and was later the co-owner and operator of Brock's Restaurant in Greenville. She was a member of the Trinity Weslyn Church.

Survivors include one stepson, Hollis Davis, Crossville, Tenn.; one step-grandchild, and one step-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews including Virginia Owens of Groseclose.

Graveside services will be held today, March 29, at 2 p.m. at the Round Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Edward Schaack officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at Barnett's Funeral Chapel.

Hockett

Joseph Hockett, 62, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 at his home in Marion.

He spent most of his life working in construction having worked for the Adams Construction Company for 18 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Bobbie Jeffreys, South Hill; one son, Joey Hockett, Damascus; two granddaughters, Amy Jeffreys and Nicki Hockett; three nieces, two nephews, many dear friends and neighbors.

Graveside services will be held today, March 29, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus with the Rev. Benny Hugeley officiating.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jarvis

Edna Crigger Jarvis, 69, died Thursday, March 27, 1997 at her home in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Sugar Grove, the daughter of the late Edward Crigger and Lillie Bonham Crigger Fulton. Mrs. Jarvis was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Bealie (C.B.) Jarvis Jr., one brother, Otis Crigger, and one daughter-in-law, Shirley Jarvis.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Kell, and Pam and Henry Corvin, all of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Jarvis, Larry and Debbie Jarvis, and Doug and Judy Jarvis, all of Rural retreat; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Luticia and Millard Strunk of Harvard, Idaho, and Winnie and Howard Keyes of Penns Grove, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, March 29, at the Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Hoyle and the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Chapter, Hospice of America.

McAllister

Bessie Mae Haynes McAllister, 66, of Saltville, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital.

Survivors include four daughters, Katherine Williams, Bloomfield Hill, Mich., Sandra Hart, Hampton, Holly Price, Saltville, and Robin Hale, Chilhowie; two brothers, Jack Haynes and Tom Haynes, both of Saltville; two sisters, Martha Shortt and Nancy Call, both of Saltville; six grandchildren: Jordan Hale, Tracy Frink, Janice Frink, Michael Williams, Christopher Williams and Joshua Presley; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 29, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Garland officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.
