Roberts

Lillian Rhea Roberts, age 71, died Saturday, March 29, 1997 at her home in Saltville. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Garnet S. Rhea. She was of the Holiness faith

Survivors include her husband, George E. Roberts; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald D. and Phyllis Rhea, Saltville; three daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Wilma) Hunt, Mrs. Dempsey (Janet) Roark, and Mrs. Kirby (Donna) Nunley, all of Saltville; three brothers, Irby Hayden and Kelly Hayden, both of Marion, and Luther Hayden, Chilhowie; four sisters, Betty Keen and Shirley Hall, both of Marion, Nancy Hayden, Rural Retreat and Judy Stamper, Lenoir, N.C.; one special aunt, Mrs. Raymond Olinger; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, in the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wade Kestner and the Rev. Vernon Olinger officiating. Burial was in the Elizabeth Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Rummell

Doris Griffitts Rummell, age 61, beloved wife of 39 years of Melvin V. "Chick" Rummell, died Sunday, March 30, 1997 in Plymouth Meeting, Penn. She was born in Marion and had attended the Marion College and Roanoke College. She was employed by the Towers-Tarrin Reinsurance Company of Philadelphia, Penn., as File Department Supervisor for 39 years.

Mrs. Rummell was an active member of the Falls Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder, Deacon, and Choir Member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Basil H. and Ruth Caudill Griffitts, and one brother, Robert L. Griffitts.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin V. "Chick" Rummell of Roxborough, Penn.; one brother, Rev. Joseph P. Griffitts of Lakeland, Fla.; six nieces and nephews: Robert L. Griffitts III and Barbara Mason, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Elizabeth A. Lyon of Lake Worth, Fla., Ann Fulcher of Richmond, William Griffitts of Damascus, Md., and Brenda Mascieri of Erial, N.J.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Steve Cathcart officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carl Caudill Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Betty Knox, 115 Rysley Dr., Greenville, N.C. 27834. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Taylor

Lydia Lou Taylor, age 80, died Monday, March 31, 1997 at her home in Marion.

She was born April 11, 1916 in Smyth County, the daughter of Andrew Caswell Taylor and Mary Catherine Norman Taylor. She was a member of the Furnace Hill Lutheran Church and was retired from the Harwood Manufacturing Company.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Hugh Mauney, Marion; one brother, Mack Taylor and wife Sadie, Lancaster, Ohio; three grandchildren, Linda (White) Burchette and husband Steve, Jefferson, N.C., Michael White, Hickory, N.C., and Greg White and wife Stephanie, Hillsville; two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Christian White, Hillsville; one step-great-grandchild, Stephen Burchette, Jefferson, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Mabel Taylor, Waynesville, Mo.; several very special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 3, at 11 a.m. in the Furnace Hill Lutheran Church with the Rev. Edward Schaack and Vicar C.C. Haxton officiating. Burial will follow in Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Boardwine

George Boardwine, age 72, died Monday, March 31, 1997 in Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport. He was a member of the Little Flock Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva N. Boardwine; four sons, George Eugene Boardwine, James Franklin Boardwine, Billy Joe Boardwine and Cleatus Dwayne Boardwine, all of Saltville; four daughters, Georgia Kennedy, Caroline Neal, Shirley DeBord, and Barbara Griffey, all of Saltville; five brothers, John Boardwine, Jim Boardwine, Paul Boardwine and Walter Boardwine, all of Elk Garden, and Anthony Boardwine, Belfast; one sister, Delaphine Colley, Saltville; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Stanley and the Rev. Wade Kestner officiating. Burial followed in the Glade Spring Baptist Cemetery.

Coe

Annie Lucille Coe, age 87, of Meadowview, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of the Seven Springs Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Samuel L. Coe. She was also preceded in death by three children.

Survivors include five sons: William L. Coe, Chilhowie, Robert L. Coe, Monterey, Tenn., Charlie Coe, Glade Spring, Randall G. Coe, Dover, Del., and Kyle D. Coe, Abingdon; three daughters, Ellen K. Thomas and Mary M. Blackwell, both of Meadowview, and Margaret A. Blevins, Chilhowie; one brother, Graham Thomas, Meadowview; two sisters, Bradley "Bea" Thomas, Meadowview, and Lorene Minton, Glade Spring; 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tom Sullivan and the Rev. George Thomas Sr. officiating. Burial was in Baptist Cemetery.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Holliday

William W. "Bill" Holliday, age 83, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and was retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad with 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Callahan Holliday of Marion; two daughters, Linda Holliday Grubb and Peggy Holliday Frye, both of Marion; two sons-in-law, Douglas V. Grubb and Foye C. Frye, both of Marion; three grandchildren, Jennifer Grubb Henson and husband Michael, Douglas Grubb II, all of Marion and William "Billy" Frye of Blacksburg; one great-grandson, Matthew Henson of Marion; one sister, Eve H. Groseclose of Speedwell.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, at 8 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. George Mowrey officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. George Mowrey officiating.

Murray

Lois S. Murray, age 96, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997 in the Columbia Edmond Memorial Center in Edmond, Okla.

She was born Jan. 26, 1901 in Meadowview, to Henry Newton and Emma A. Goodman Stump. She had trained as a nurse prior to her marriage to Clyde Lester Murray Sr. on July 24, 1920 in Iowa. They lived in the Enid, Okla., area for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Murray was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star, the East Side Garden Club, AARP and the University Place Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son; one sister, Maude Stump Moore of Seven Mile Ford; and two brothers.

She is survived by one son, Robert C. Murray of Richardson, Texas; one sister, Sena Blessing of Seven Mile Ford; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, at 10 a.m. in the University Place Christian Church with the Rev. Mike S. Nicolson and the Rev. John Peterson officiating. Burial followed in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Henninger-Allen Funeral Home in Edmond, Okla., was in charge of arrangements.

Selvage

Ella Davis Selvage, age 94, died Thursday, March 27, 1997 at her home in Amherst. She was the wife of the late Donald Hollis Selvage Sr.

Born Sept. 14, 1902 in Smyth County, she was the daughter of the late George Sprinkle and Grace Repass Davis.

She is survived by one son, Donald Hollis Selvage Jr. and wife, Betsy, of Amherst; one daughter, Marjorie S. Stone, Athens, Ohio; one sister, Kathleen Davis of Atkins; one sister-in-law, Hildred Davis of Atkins; three grandsons, Rick A. Stone, Los Angeles, Calif., Edward S. Stone, Roanoke, and Glenn D. Stone and wife Priscilla of St. Louis, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Jordan Stone.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. Scott McCleary officiating. Burial was in Amherst Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Epiphany or a charity of your choice.

Driskill Funeral Chapel of Amherst was in charge of arrangements.

Tielman

Hendrik H. Tielman, age 72, died Monday, March 31, 1997 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a Dutch citizen, born and raised in The Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia.

He survived the Japanese occupation during World War II lived in Holland after the war and immigrated to the United States in 1960.

He retired from Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park, Md., as a respiratory therapist and moved to Marion.

Survivors include his wife, Dora E. Tielman, Takoma Park, Md.; one son, John A. Tielman, Severn, Md.; one daughter, Anna Maria Tielman, Takoma Park, Md.; one brother, Frederik J. Tielman, Groesbeek, Brabant, The Netherlands; one sister, Anna C. Devlin, Rich Valley; one grandson, Emil T. Tielman; one brother-in-law, Robert Devlin, Rich Valley.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the Knollkreg Mausoleum, Abingdon, with the Rev. Robert Parrish officiating. Entombment followed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Parkinson Disease Association, Suite 4B, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, N.Y. 10305.
