Phipps

Harvie B. Phipps, age 91, of Flatridge, died Friday, May 30, 1997 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, Pauline Young Phipps and Maude Parks Phipps.

Mr. Phipps was born Dec. 19, 1905 at Flatridge, the son of Ben and Betty Burton Phipps. He was a member and deacon of Burton's Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. June (Velma) Barker, Sugar Grove, and Mrs. Bill (Nancy) Hodge, Independence; two sons, Ben Phipps, Flatridge, and Harold Phipps, Chilhowie; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. in Burton's Chapel Baptist Church in Flatridge with the Rev. Joe Warren, Rev. Bill Moss and Rev. Bill Morefield officiating. Interment was in Burton's Chapel Cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Burton's Chapel Cemetery, c/o Garnett Ralph Ross, Treasurer, 252 Glenwood Road, Troutdale, VA 24378.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of arrangements.

Reid

Fred Reid, age 86, of Chilhowie, died Sunday, June 1, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

He was a retired employee of the Marion Motor Company, and a retired farmer. He attended the Friendship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nada Lou Martin Reid.

Survivors include one son, Tom H. Reid, Mountain City, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Nelda) Phillips, and Mrs. Toby (Kate) Blevins, both of Chilhowie; two brothers, Heird Reid, Mountain City, Tenn., and Homer Reid, Chilhowie; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, June 4, in Friendship Baptist Church in Glade Spring with the Rev. Paul Jones and Dr. Jack Garland officiating. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Baptist Church, 35411 Loves Mill Road, Glade Spring, VA 24340. The body will be taken to the church one hour before services.

Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie is in charge of arrangements.

Riffey

Emma E. "Polly" Riffey, age 80, of Abingdon, died Thursday, May 29, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Smyth County but had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a member of Trigg Street Church of God and was the widow of Ernest Riffey.

Survivors include three sons, Paul Riffey, Damascus, Bill Riffey and Allen Riffey, both of Abingdon; seven daughters, Josie Riffey and Sharon Thomas, both of Abingdon, Charlotte R. Denton, Bristol, Tenn., Loretta R. McCray and Joyce Holmes, both of Meadowview, Ruth Day, Cumberland, Ky., and Katie Blevins, Chilhowie; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dale Frazier and the Rev. James Beaver officiating. Burial was in Sulpher Springs Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Anderson

Allen Earl Anderson, age 69, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Anderson was a 30 year veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 360 in Montverde, Fla., a member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667, a member of the American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve Association. He retired from Disney World in Florida having worked there for 10 years. He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by one sister-in-law, Georgia McLaughlin of Marion; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, June 6, at 2 p.m. in Rose Lawn Cemetery with Pastor James Bangle officiating. Full military honors were rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Asbury

Edward T. "E.T." Asbury, age 73, of Saltville, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a former employee of the Olin Corporation, a veteran of World War II and a member of William King Masonic Lodge No. 227.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Rector Asbury; two daughters, Mrs. E.P. (Debbie) Ogle, Marion, and Mrs. Dennis (Lori) Gillespie, Rich Valley; two sons, Edward T. "Eddie" Asbury Jr., Chilhowie, and Mark H. Asbury, Charlottesville; two sisters, Olivene A. Farris, Saltville and Jane A. Leach, Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Charles E. Asbury, Saltville, and Robert I. Asbury, Marion; four grandchildren, Trey Asbury, Annie Ogle, Megan Ogle and Caitlyn Asbury; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 7, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott A. Robertson-Gouge officiating, assisted by Mark Asbury. A military graveside service will be conducted by the Saltville VFW Post No. 7328 and Masonic rites conducted by William King Lodge No. 227 will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Bales

Clara Barnett Bales, age 97, died Thursday, June 5, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church and had worked at Collins Department Store and Baldwins in Marion for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Bales.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Vance Barnett of Richmond; three stepchildren: Fred Bales, Richmond, Frank Bales, Anderson, Ind., and Wilma Snyder, Salem, Ore.; several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held today, June 7, at 2 p.m. in Round Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Eddie Beck officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Firestone

Ralph William Firestone, age 54, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997.

Mr. Firestone was a native of West Virginia and had lived a number of years in the Marion area. He was a self-employed contractor and was a member of the Herndon Freewill Baptist Church in West Virginia.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Firestone, Tony Firestone, and Mark Firestone, all of Marion; one daughter, Taméra Firestone, Athens, W.Va.; his mother, Ethel Firestone, Vinton; three brothers, Clarence Firestone, Mobile, Ala., Mitchell Firestone, Falls Church, and David Firestone, Herndon, W.Va.; two sisters, Linda L. Pierce and Mary De Vault, both of Vinton; one grandson, Anthony Firestone Jr.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with burial in the Attoway Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henderson

Queenie Irene Henderson, age 72, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Henderson was a lifelong resident of Smyth County where she grew up in the Mount Carmel area. She was retired from the Brunswick Defense Corporation and was a member of the Nicks Creek Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Henderson, Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Ronnie and Bonnie Ann Trivett, Marion; one brother, Junior Harris, Marion; two grandchildren, Anna Sue Knapp and Michelle Lynn Trivett; one great-grandchild, Ryan Michael Knapp.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Foster officiating. Interment was in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
