McBride

Harry "Butch" McBride, age 51, died Saturday, June 28 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A native of Pennsylvania, he had lived in the Abingdon area for many years. He was in the United States Air Forcefor four years, having served in Guam. He attended California State College in Pennsylvania, received his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University. and his Master's degree from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. He was employed as librarian at Marion Middle School. He was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 70, served on the District Boy Scout Committee, the Abingdon High School Band Boosters Equipment Crew and had been active in boys Little League for many years.

He is survived by: his wife, Juanita Lynn McBride; one son, Shane Bryant McBride of the home; his mother, Adele D. McBride, Aliquippa, Penn.; one brother, John E. McBride Jr., Aliquippa, Penn. Visitation will be at Greensprings Presbyterian Church, on Watauga Road south of Abingdon, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 4. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. at the church with the Rev. William J. Youmans officiating. Private interment services will be held Saturday, July 5, at Green Springs Presbyterian Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Shawn Miller, Joe Stanley, Bill Pugh, Anthony Troutman, Larry Bowling, Ray Jamison, John Remine and Kevin Bowling. Honorary pallbearers will be the R.C. Miller family, the faculty of Marion Middle School, Lewis Clay, Abingdon High School Band Boosters Equipment Crew, Troop 70 of the Boy Scouts of America, and the Boy Scouts District Committee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of the following: Troop 70 B.S.A.; Green Springs Presbyterian Church, 24384 Watauga Road, Abingdon, VA 24211; or Abingdon High School Band Boosters, 705 Thompson Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. McBride.

Paul

Frederick W. Paul Jr., age 62, formerly of Saltville and Marion, died Sunday, June 29, 1997 at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene S. Paul; two daughters, Ellen Nipper, Marion, and Lisa Cederberg, Citrus Heights, Calif.; one sister, Dr. Geraldine W. Paul, Sun City, Ariz.; two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, Marion, at a later date.

Sturgill

Glendon Blaine Sturgill Sr., age 43, died Sunday, June 29, 1997 in Port Deposit, Md. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary V. Gillespie Sturgill.

He is survived by his father, Cleveland Blaine Sturgill Sr., Chilhowie; two sons, Glendon Blaine Sturgill Jr., Indiana, and Brandon Avery Sturgill, Lancaster, Penn.; two daughters, Tina Hamm and Nicole Polly Jones, both of Port Deposit, Md.; one brother, Cleveland Blaine Sturgill Jr., Perryville, Md.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, at 1 p.m. at Patterson Funeral Home, Perryville, Md., with the Rev. Dr. John M.R. Gauger officiating. Burial followed in Principio Cemetery in Perryville, Md. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Patterson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 188, Perryville, Md. 21903.

Barker

Fred L. Barker, age 55, formerly of Marion, died Monday, July 7, 1997 at his home in Slidell, La.

He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and a civil engineer for Exxon Corporation for over 30 years. He was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member of the First Baptist Church in Slidell, La.

Mr. Barker was preceded in death by his father, Arnie Wilson Barker.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Zeigler Barker of Slidell, La.; two sons, Brandon Todd Barker and Matthew David Barker, both of Slidell, La.; one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Pruett of Austin, Texas; his mother, Evelyn Wood Barker of Marion; two brothers, Larry Barker of Marion, and Royce Barker of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one sister, Deborah Barker Thweatt of Marion; one granddaughter, Alesha Dawn Barker of Slidell, La.

Funeral services will be held today, July 9, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Slidell, La., with Dr. Michael Clauch and the Rev. Jim Baham officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Northshore Hospice, c/o Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd., West Slidell, La.

Goodman

Elma Coulthard Goodman, age 83, died Sunday, July 6, 1997 at her home in Marion.

Mrs. Goodman was preceded in death by her husband, James O. "Snook" Goodman, and a grandson, Gary Michael Simms.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Jack Simms of Marion; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Mel Green of Longview, Texas, Dorothy Roberson of Dandridge, Tenn., and Grace and L.J. Rector of Seven Mile Ford; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Richardson of Peoria, Ariz., and Lucille Wassum of Wilmington, Del.; three grandchildren, Jay Simms and John Simms, both of Marion, and Joe Simms and wife April of Danville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Sidney Mays officiating. Burial followed in Round Hill Cemetery.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Holman

Alice Aker Holman, age 104, died Monday, July 7, 1997 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Mrs. Holman was preceded in death by five children: John B. Holman, Glenn Holman, Monroe E. Holman, William C. Holman and Frieda Siegert.

Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Emma Henderlite, Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. (Myrtle) Thompson, Radford, and Elizabeth Wahl, Aliquippa, Penn.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lenoir Pennington, Marion, and Josephine and Howard Ansett, Baltimore, Md. one daughter-in-law, Manza Holman, Marion.

Funeral services will be conducted today, July 9, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. Grady Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnson

MacKenzie Kaitlyn Inez Johnson, of Saltville, died Monday, July 7, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Survivors include her parents, Harry E. "Ernie" and Tamela "Tammy" Ward Johnson; two brothers, Garrison Kopp and Taylor Kopp, both of the home; one sister, Cassandra Johnson, Saltville; her grandparents, Elizabeth Osborne, Alfred and Shirley Ward, and Malcolm and Shirley Haynes, all of Saltville; her great-grandparents, Willie Ward and Lena Comer, both of Saltville, and Macie Ratcliff, Chilhowie; several aunts and uncles.

A private family memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Elizabeth Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

McCracken

Nellie I. McCracken, age 77, of Damascus, died Thursday, July 3, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. McCracken was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was the widow of Roy C. McCracken.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Shirkey, Cornelius, N.C., and Debra McCracken, Damascus; two sons, Bobby Trent and Paul Trent, both of Damascus; her stepmother, Della Trent of Damascus; four sisters, Carolyn Price, Hickory, N.C., Helen Carroll, Ferguson, N.C., Martha Owens, Meadowview, and Mary Milhorn, Johnson City, Tenn.; two brothers, Billy Trent, Damascus, and Jack Trent, Glade Spring; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, in Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, with Denver Doss officiating.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.
