Darnell
Jay Edward Darnell, 70, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at his son's home in Kingsport, Tenn.
He was a native of Saltville and had lived in Dayton, Ohio for 34 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Will" Darnell and Rosie Broady Darnell.
He retired from Dayton Tire & Rubber Company and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include one son, Billy Darnell, Kingsport, Tenn.; three daughters, Debra Sue Totten and Beverly Darnell, both of Saltville, and Jodie Helton, Chilhowie; one brother, Eugene Darnell, Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. A military graveside service was conducted by Saltville VFW Post 7328 in Mt. Rose Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad. D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.
Holley
Sheila
Smith Holley, 50, of Saltville, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She attended Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas W. "Tom" Holley; one son, Michael T. Holley of the home; her father, Elbert P. "Jim" Smith, Saltville; two brothers, Douglas P. Smith, Abingdon, and Chester Allen Smith, Saltville; one sister, Vickie Lynn Smith, Saltville; several nieces and nephews; a special cousin, Mike Smith.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Lighthouse Baptist Church in McCready with the Rev. Benny Frye, the Rev. Bobby Briggs, the Rev. Thurman Chapman and the Rev. R.L. Frye officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Lamie
John L. Lamie Sr., 61, of Chilhowie, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was preceded in death by one brother, James C. Lamie, and one sister, Christine Fabinski.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy "Gerry" Robbins Lamie; two sons, John L. Lamie Jr., Marion, and David W. Lamie, Chilhowie; two daughters-in-law, Kyra Lamie, Marion, and Sherry Lamie, Chilhowie; five sisters: Kathleen Gates and Trula Price, both of Saltville, Mrs. Tracy (Ruby) Bailey, Hays, Mrs. Herman (Bonnie) Harris, Rockville, Md., and Mrs. Roy (Eula) Rhea, Mansfield, Ohio; one brother, Tommy Lamie, Sunrise, Fla.; four grandchildren: Jason and Michelle, both of Marion, and Josh and Jeremy, both of Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 13, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marion Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Lyon
Larry Leonard Lyon, 37, of Sugar Grove, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde DeSale Lyon and one brother, Conley Dean Lyon.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Cissy) Simons Lyon of Sugar Grove; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Mandi and Will Vanhoozer of Marion; his mother, Ola Richardson Lyon of Sugar Grove; two sisters, Patricia Lyon Woods of Independence, and Connie Lyon Watson of Atkins; two brothers, T.D. Lyon of Marion, and Clyde R. (Dickie) Lyon of Sugar Grove; one very special companion, Milwaukee; 14 nieces, seven nephews, four great-nephews and eight great-nieces.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial followed in the Hutton-Cox Cemetery, Sugar Grove.

Miller
Rev. A.F. Miller, 94, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Rev. Miller was a native of Ashe County, N.C. He lived most of his life in Smyth County and Grayson County. He started preaching at the age of 14 and was ordained at the age of 17. He pastored over 40 churches and his ministry spanned over 80 years. He retired from the East End Baptist Church in Marion.
Rev. Miller was associated with the Southern Baptist Convention, the New River Baptist Association and the Lebanon Baptist Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Miller and two grandsons, Albert Ray Miller Jr., and Phillip A. Greer.
Survivors include two daughters, Pauline Ours, Broque, Penn., and Geneva Stamper, New Port Richey, Fla.; one son, the Rev. A. Ray Miller, Boones Mill; one sister, Ethel Miller, Nottingham, Penn.; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. T.A. Pennington and the Rev. Jim Stamper officiating. Burial will follow in the Byers Cemetery in Whitetop. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Service of Remembrance being held at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Michael Walker officiating.

Minnick
Josephine Counts Minnick, 81, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
She was the widow of Walter Jackson Minnick and was also preceded in death by a son, Clyde Allen Minnick. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Anna M. Fields, Winston-Salem, N.C.; three brothers, Clyde P. Counts, Fayetteville, N.C., George Counts, Cockeyville, Md., and Thomas J. Counts, Louisiana; one sister, Katherine McClure, Laurel Springs, N.C.; five grandchildren: Steve Fields, Elaine Doak, Susan Fields, Tony Minnick and David Minnick; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Glade Spring with the Rev. Frank Branson officiating.

Schoener
James Robert Schoener, 39, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Lola Schoener; two sons, Jeremy James and Joshua Robert Schoener, both of the home; his mother and stepfather, William and Beverly Harder, New Baltimore, Mich.; his father and stepmother, Jerome and Mary Schoener, Troy, Mich.; his grandmother, Evelyn Kaley, Warren, Mich.; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice Ann and Howard Wemple, Glennellen, Ill.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Schoener, Union, Ky., and Steven and Marianna Schoener, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment was private.

Sexton
Annie Ethel Powers Sexton, 91, of the Stony Battery Community, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997 at her home.
Mrs. Sexton was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She attended services at the Macedonia Baptist Church.
She was an avid gardener, a great cook, and was well-loved by all in the community.
Survivors include one son, Lee Jack Powers, Chilhowie; one granddaughter, Cynthia Dawn Powers, Abingdon; three sisters, Pearl Sheets and Etta Reeves, both of Marion, and Bessie Blevins, Baltimore, Md.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Powers officiating. Interment will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Walter Price Baumgardner, 68, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 at the home of his son.
Mr. BaumGardner was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Clay and Elta Ratliff Baumgardner; one son, Gary Baumgardner; one brother, William Clay Baumgardner.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ted Wayne and Vanessa Baumgardner, Wytheville; one daughter, Amanda Jane Baumgardner, Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson, Joseph Clay Baumgardner; a special friend, Lillian Hayden, Chilhowie; one sister-in-law, Annie C. Baumgardner, Seven Mile Ford; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in
Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Doane officiating. Burial was in the Thomas Cemetery, Adwolfe. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
