Ratcliff

Macy Ratcliff, age 90, of Saltville, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

She was a lifetime member of First Christian Church, Saltville.

She was the widow of J.W. Ratcliff. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Doug and Maynard Ratcliff.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Alfred Ward, Saltville; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Bonnie Ratcliff, Saltville; five grandsons; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. in Elizabeth Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Williams officiating.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Blevins

Patty Jean Trivett Blevins, age 40, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Blevins was a native of Konnarock and was residing in Marion. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Blevins, Marion; two children, Carrie Blevins and Ronald Blevins, both of the home; her mother, Barbara Trivett, Konnarock; her father, Garland Lowe, Marion; three sisters, Mrs. Ervin (Sherry) Smith Jr., Mrs. Ronald (Kathy) Burns, and Rhonda Lowe, all of Marion; her grandmother, Clyde Trivett, Konnarock; two nieces, Kayla Lowe and Shauna Smith; two nephews, Mark Blevins and a very special nephew, Dakota Smith; several brothers- and sisters-in-law, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Powers officiating. Interment followed in the Azen Cemetery in Konnarock.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Byrd

Wayne L. Byrd, age 85, of Flatridge, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was born Sept. 5, 1912 at Flatridge to James Monroe and Cansada Parks Byrd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Ward Byrd.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Raymond and Glenda Byrd, Flatridge, and Wade Byrd, Marion; one sister, Ruth McMillian, Flatridge; two granddaughters and spouses, Derenda and Dennis Roop, Troutdale, and Terrie and Scott Lewis, Sterling; four great-grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, one step-grandson and four step-great-granddaughters.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. in Baptist Union Church, Flatridge, with the Rev. Mike Owens and the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. Interment will follow in Honey Grove Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the service to lie in state. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Smyth County Dialysis Emergency Fund, 1152 Snider St., Marion, VA 24354.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of arrangements.

Howell

Bernard Graham Howell, age 66, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997 at his home in Elkton, Md.

Mr. Howell retired in 1982 after working 30 years at the Chrysler assembly plant in Newark, Del. He was a charter member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Rising Sun, Md., where he served as deacon before his illness.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley R. Howell of the home; two daughters, Diana Kaye Loomis of Newark, Del., and Sharon Faye Howell of Elkton, Md.; two sisters, Jean Young of Orlando, Fla., and Swansie Baldwin of West Jefferson, N.C.; one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Rising Sun, Md. Burial was in Nottingham Missionary Baptist Cemetery near Oxford, Penn.

R.T. Jones & Foard Funeral Home in Newark, Del., was in charge of arrangements.

Johnson

Minnie Ruth Poe Johnson, age 90, of Damascus, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a native of Damascus and a member of First Baptist Church, Damascus. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wells Poe and Sarah Jane Hand Poe; and two sons, Paul B. Johnson and Jim Johnson.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Johnson and Howard Johnson, both of Damascus; one daughter, Peggy Lewis, Damascus; one sister, Margie Harris, Damascus; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 8, in Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Damascus Life Saving Crew.

Mountain

Edward William Mountain, age 75, of Glade Spring, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a retired employee of Marion Bottling Co., a farmer and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Glade Spring.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Miller Mountain; two sons, William E. Mountain, Toledo, Ohio, and Joe M. Mountain, Seven Mile Ford; two daughters, Rebecca Davis, Piney Flats, and Doris Mountain, Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 8, in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Glade Spring, with Dr. Jack Garland officiating.

Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie is in charge of arrangements.

Pickle

Irene Josephine Overbay Pickle, age 67, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997 at her home in Atkins.

Mrs. Pickle lived most of her life in Smyth County and worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Mountain View Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Pickle, Atkins; three daughters, Candy Parks, Pam Greer, both of Atkins, Mellaine Ishihara, Marion; two sisters, Rachel Vipperman, Rural Retreat, and Viola Overbay, Atkins; three brothers, Frank Overbay, Bel Air, Md., Rubin Overbay, Kingsport, Tenn., and Talmadge Overbay, Atkins; four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Neese and the Rev. Tom Bunting officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ross

Dawn Lane Ross, age 91, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

She was the widow of Emmett Ross and a member of the Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Edna Ross, Troutdale; one brother, W. Ray Lane, Elk Mills, Md.; six grandchildren, Nancy Goodman, Marion, Barbara Moore, Roanoke, Glenna Reed, Rocky Gap, Dale Ross, Hillsville, Phyllis Ross, Troutdale, and Patricia Lester, Fries; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. tonight, Oct. 8, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Baker and the Rev. Mark McFadden officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Rockbridge Cemetery, Grayson County, with the Rev. Ted Bonham officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Williams Funeral Home.
