McCathron
Bonnie Marie McCathron, age 53, of Abingdon and formerly of Groseclose, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She is survived by two daughters, Deneena Joyce McCathron of Abingdon, and Amber Davis of Gaithersburg, Md.; her mother, Hazel Marie
Jones of Wytheville; two sisters, Terry Welch of Atkins, and Sandy Ward of Maryland; two brothers, Hobert Welch of Marion and Danny Gail Welch of Atkins; very special friend, Elizabeth Smith; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Diabetic Treatment Center at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bonnie's name.

McClure
Dorothy F. McClure, age 58, of Abingdon, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a life member of Chilhowie Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Sally Estep McClure.
Survivors include one brother, David Wayne McClure, Meadowview; two sisters, Mary Thomas, Bristol, and Charlotte Goodman, Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. David Critcher officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Chilhowie Christian Church, 204 Church Avenue, Chilhowie, VA 24319.

Shumate
James Randolph Shumate, age 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Rhoades Prater Shumate in 1992.
He retired from the Brunswick Corporation in 1981 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Marion Lodge of the Grand Lodge AF & AM of Virginia. He was a life member of the Royal Arch Chapter of the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons in Virginia. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Frances B. Shumate, Atlanta, Ga.; one granddaughter, Leslie Shumate Crawley, Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson, David C. Shumate, Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted today, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Rhoades-Prater Family Cemetery on Old Prater Road with fellow Masons and the Rev. Pollock officiating. Those who prefer may make a memorial donation to the Marion Lifesaving and First Aid Crew.

Smith
Glenn B. Smith, age 77, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable (Campbell) Smith, and by one son, Roy C. Smith.
He was a native of Saltville and a retired employee of the Smyth County school system. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Dean Smith, Glade Spring; one daughter, Jewel Arrington, Tazewell; one brother, Clarence Smith, Ohio; three sisters, Edith Goff, Saltville, Bertha Heath, Chilhowie, and Dorothy Blevins, Florida; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Patty Snow.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 18, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kyle French and Clergy Tim
Smith officiating. Burial will be in
Smith Family Cemetery.

Robert H. "Bob" Sword, age 92, of Saltville, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a retired employee of Olin Corporation, a member of Woodmen of the World, and he loved baseball and bowling.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary T. Sword; one daughter, Jane Sword Haynes; and one son, James Sword.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty A. Bowen, Kingsport, Tenn.; two brothers, Joe M. "Pete" Sword and William C. "Bunk" Sword, both of Saltville; 11 grandchildren: Theresa Stacy, Tim Bowen, Vicki Baker, Susan Eden, Jeff Haynes, David Bowen, Lisa Bowen, Lea Anna Whittaker, Malcolm Haynes, Wendy Davis and Mark Haynes; and a special granddaughter, Beth Haynes; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Andy Bresnock officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 18, in Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville.

Akers
William "Bill" Akers, age 68, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 at his home in New Haven, Ind.
He was a native of Chilhowie and a retired truck driver from Commercial Motor Freight Company of Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Martin Akers; one daughter, Teresa A. Walls, Gastonia, N.C.; six sons, Jeff Akers, New Haven, Ind., the Rev. Steve Akers, Kings Mountain, N.C., Rich Akers and Gary Akers, both of Gastonia, N.C., Richard Williams, Fort Wayne, Ind., and James B. Williams, Burbank, Calif.; one sister, Jewel Barr, Chilhowie; one brother, Gene Robinson, Fort Wayne, Ind.; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in Friendship Baptist Church in Glade Spring with Dr. Jack Garland officiating. John Wayne Martin delivered the eulogy. Savannah Lynn Barr, infant daughter of Chad and Michelle Barr of Abingdon, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She is also survived by one sister, Alex Barr of Abingdon; her maternal grandparents, Bonnie Howell and husband Duane of Atkins, and Thomas Fulcher of Groseclose; her paternal grandparents, Pat and Jerry Barr of Marion; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Cassady of Atkins; one aunt, Jerrie Barr of New York City, N.Y.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Frank Honeycutt and Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Chief Master Sgt. William Clifford Craig USAF (retired), of Tannersville, died Saturday, Oct, 18, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.
He was treasurer of the Tannersville Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Little Valley Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret E. Craig; one daughter, Patricia Craig, Tannersville; one stepdaughter, Helga Burch, Louisville, Ky.; one stepson, Herbert Guthy, Pittsburg, Calif.; one granddaughter; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 22, in Osborne Family Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Harrison and the Rev. Kyle French officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tannersville Fire Department or Tannersville Rescue Squad.
