Smith
William Alfred "Bill" Smith, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Annie Smith.
He was an active member of First Church of God until his illness, serving as a youth counselor, Sunday School teacher, superintendent and choir member.
He was awarded a lifetime membership in National PTA, having served as president of Allison Gap PTA, and was active in VEA offices as a teacher in Washington County Vocational School.
He was a founding member of Allison Gap Ruritan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Clarice (Flournoy) Smith; two daughters and one son-in-law, Faye (Smith) and Charles Tilson, Blacksburg, and Kay (Smith) Brown, Nashville, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, James A. "Jim" and Pam Smith, Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Sandy
Smith and Con Smith, both of Saltville; three sisters, Uldine Frye and Alice "Podie" Lowe, both of Saltville, and Ruth Greer, Atkins; seven grandchildren: Lee (Tilson) Strand, Trey Tilson, Sarah Tilson, Jeff Brown, Steve Brown, Rikki
Smith and William Smith; two great-grandchildren, Joey and Christopher Strand; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 15, in First Church of God with the Rev. David Mumpower officiating.

Taylor
Velma Cole Taylor, 83, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and retired as the deputy treasurer of Washington County in 1978.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Abingdon, and was the widow of Charles Clifton Taylor Sr. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Clifton Taylor Jr.
Survivors include two sisters, Sara Cole Aubitz, Abingdon, and Jean Cole Doss, Damascus; one brother, Bob Cole, Damascus; two grandsons, Charles Clifton Taylor III, Mobile, Ala., and Eric Harbard Taylor, Marietta, Ga.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Mock Cemetery with Pastor Frank Honeycutt officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mary
Smith Fannin of Coalwood, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997 in Welch Emergency Hospital.
She is survived by one sister, Ruby Fannin of Marion; one son, Ernest Fannin of Marion; four daughters: Kathleen Cassell of Narrows, Lillian and Helen Fannin of Coalwood, W.Va., and Mrs. Roger (Betty Jane) Cox of Newhall, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Jay (Monica) Richardson of Sugar Grove; one grandson, Jason Vanover of Gastonia, N.C.; one step-grandson, David Scott of Roanoke; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Jacob Richardson of Sugar Grove; one step-great-granddaughter, Emi Scott of Rural Retreat.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Coalwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating.

Renee Denise Richardson Holt, age 32, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997.
She was born in Kingsport, Tenn., where she spent most of her life having spent the last several years in Marion. She was a 1982 graduate of Daniel Boone High School. She was in Who's Who of American High School students. She was also a Boonette winning a championship in New York. She graduated from ETSU in 1986. She taught computer classes at Emory & Henry College and was co-owner of Advance Computer Solutions of Marion.
She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Surviving are her mother, Mabel H. Richardson, Gray, Tenn.; her father, Charles E. Richardson, Kentucky; two sisters, Gwen Buff, California, and Mrs. Dale (Theresa) Vaughn, Rogersville, Tenn.; one brother, Charles Dana Richardson, Gray, Tenn.; three nieces, two nephews and one great-niece.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home Chapel in Kingsport, Tenn., with Pastor Cecil Sturgill officiating. Paul E. "Bunzie"
Johnson Jr., age 27, of Mountain City, Tenn., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997 in Atkins.
He was a native of Watauga County, N.C., but had made his home in
Johnson County, Tenn., all his life. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, W. Wynn and Nola Mae Johnson, and his maternal grandparents, Weston and Ruth Hawks.
He was a millwright worker.
Survivors include his father, Paul E.
Johnson Sr. of Mountain City, Tenn.; his mother, Joyce S. Johnson, Atkins; four sisters, Dorrenda Dolph, Michele Price and Melody Johnson, all of Atkins, and Angie Marshall of Mountain City, Tenn.; a special friend, Kim Vanhoy and son Matt; several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. in Percy-Hux Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Boyer and Mr. Jim Hutchinson officiating. Burial will be in the Phillippi Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Kell
Henry Alonzo "Lon" Kell, age 85, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of the Chilhowie Church of God and was retired from the Virginia Dept. of Highways with over 37 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Doane Kell of Marion; one daughter, Lou Verne Kell Robinson, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Henry Andrew "H.A." and Gaynell Kell of Marion; one sister, Louise Avery, Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Charles "Jack" Carrico and Bernie Carrico, both of Marion, and James Preston Carrico of Hopewell; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Chilhowie Church of God with the Rev. E.B. Ford and the Rev. Arthur Chapman officiating. Burial was in the Middlefork Cemetery.

Litton
Myrtle Litton, age 82, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a member of Joy Baptist Church in Chilhowie, and was the widow of Howard Litton.
Survivors include one son, Jim Litton, Glade Spring; two daughters, Bonnie L. Johnson, Marion, and Anna Marie McClure, Meadowview; five brothers, John Seymore and Fred Seymore, both of Abingdon, Tom Seymore, Glade Spring, J.F. Seymore, Orange, and Sam Seymore, Meadowview; two sisters, Pauline Griffith and Dorothy Countiss, both of Bristol; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Farris Funeral Chapel with burial in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery.

Moore
Joseph Garland Moore, age 37, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Moore was a native of Smyth County and had served in the U.S. Army for over 13 years. He was employed at the Advance Computer Solution in Marion at the time of his death.
Survivors include his mother, Eunice Spencer of Atkins; his father, James Spencer Moore, Chester, Penn.; paternal grandmother, Stella Snyder, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Joy Grinstead, Chilhowie, and Carol Moore, Marion; one brother, Marty Moore, Marion; three nephews, Chad, Nathan and Tyler Grinstead.
Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Alley officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Park in Rural Retreat with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
