Reedy

J. Lester Reedy Sr., age 87, of Troutdale, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997 at Blue Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center in Galax.

Mr. Reedy was born Jan. 10, 1910 to Orley G. and Dora Comer Reedy. He was owner and operator of Reedy's Country Ham Store in Troutdale. He was a member of Troutdale Baptist Church serving many years as church deacon. He served many years as a member of Town Council for the Town of Troutdale.

Mr. Reedy was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Richardson Reedy; and a son, Harold R. Reedy.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, J.L. Jr. and Candace Reedy of Independence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Robert Halsey of Rocky Mount and Nancy and Billy Anderson of Glen Arm, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Phelps Reedy of Sugar Grove; six grandchildren and spouses: Jenny Reedy, Megan Reedy, both of Independence, Marty Anderson, Baltimore, Md., Ben and Yvette Reedy of Sugar Grove, Becky and Tim Griffiths of Perry Hall, Md., Robbie Halsey of Denver, Colo.; two great grandchildren, Ryan and Jessica Griffiths of Perry Hall, Md.; one brother, Gordon Reedy, Bel Air, Md.; three sisters, Edith Halsey of Marion, Clara Richardson and Hazel Wagoner, both of Bel Air, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Reedy and Elouise Reedy, both of Bel Air, Md.; a special friend, Lura Cox, Independence.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. in Troutdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Flippin, the Rev. Brian Miller and the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Interment will be in Troutdale Cemetery. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home where family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes preceding the service. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Troutdale Baptist Church or the Independence Rescue Squad. The family will be at the residence in Troutdale where friends may call at anytime.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of arrangements.

Warren

Earl Warren, age 68, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997 at his home in Deming, N.M.

Mr. Warren was born Dec. 21, 1928 in Walker County, Ala., to Henry and Leana Williams Warren. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II.

Mr. Warren worked in the chemical industry in Los Angeles, Calif., where he developed a cleaner that is used all over the world. He also owned an electrical equipment manufacturing and repair business. He had been a resident of Deming, N.M., for seven years.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Williamson Warren of Deming, N.M.; one son, Kent Warren of Deming, N.M.; one daughter, Lori Warren of Jasper, Ala.; two brothers, Daryl Warren of Jasper, Ala., and Wilson Warren of Red Bank, Ala.; two sisters, Lee Cline and Annie Hagood of Jasper, Ala.; two grandsons, Mastin Warren of Troutdale, and Tony Batson of Jasper, Ala.; two granddaughters, Rhonda Barnes of Chilhowie and Deanna Batson of Jasper, Ala.

A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Chadwick officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Fort Baynard National Cemetery in Deming, N.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Smyth County, P.O. Box 843, Marion, VA 24354.

Aaron Shawn Hall

An early morning traffic accident near Bristol claimed the lives of two Smyth County natives Wednesday, Nov. 19. The wreck happened at 12:20 a.m., about one mile west of the Bristol city limits, on U.S. 58, according to Virginia State Police Sergeant E. D. Johnson.

Jackie Bryan French Jr., 28, of Bristol, and Aaron Shawn Hall, 33, of Seven Mile Ford, both received fatal injuries when the 1991 Chevrolet Corvette French was driving struck a 1984 Freightliner Road Tractor belonging to the Big Valley Seeding Company of Bristol.

French was a graduate of Emory & Henry College. A talented musician, he was a member of two popular local groups, The Travelers Revision Band and Fuzzy Navel.

Virginia State Trooper M. W. Sutherland, the investigating officer, said the car was traveling west, apparently at high speed, when it rounded a curve, skidded off the right side of the road, flipped over and struck the tractor. The medical examiner ordered both victims transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Both men were dead on arrival there.

French, a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church, is survived by his wife Susan Sturgill French, Bristol; his parents Anna Lee and Jackie French, Seven Mile Ford; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Heath, Chilhowie; and his paternal grandfather Carmel French, Chilhowie.

Services were at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21, in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie. The Rev. Charles Blevins officiated, burial followed in the Macedonia Cemetery.

Hall is survived by his wife, Lynn Heath Hall; two sons, Aaron Christopher Hall and Johnathan Paige Hall; his parents Grant and Olivene Hall; his grandmother, Clara Woods Hall; two sisters Cindy Cox and Mandy Hall, all of Marion; two brothers, David Hall, Kodak, Tenn., and Grant Hall Jr., Marion; and five nieces and seven nephews. Hall is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Andy Cox and James Heath, Marion; four sisters-in-law, Sandy Hall, Kodak, Tenn., Pam Hall, Marion, Tammy Blankenship, Narrows and Crystal Heath, Oceanside, Calif.; as well as his wife's parents Bill and Linda Heath, Marion.

Services were Friday, Nov. 21 in Seaver- Brown Chapel in Marion. The Rev. Charlie Harkleroad officiated.

Barlow

John Barlow, age 64, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997 at his home in Glade Spring.

Mr. Barlow was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a farmer.

He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Chapman of Glade Spring; five sisters, Carrie Owens, Dorothy Widener, Minnie Faye Widener, Margie Thomas, and Edna Thomas, all of Glade Spring; four brothers, Elihue Barlow of Glade Spring, Buster Barlow of Sugar Grove, Ernest Barlow of Norfolk, and Eugene Barlow of Damascus; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the graveside in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with the Rev. J.L. DeBord officiating.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

Blevins

Bobby Burton Blevins, age 62, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Deanie Olinger Blevins of Marion; one son, Mark Blevins of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Sherry Jost of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Sarah Jane Hash of Marion, and Mary Elizabeth Blevins of Flint, Mich.; four brothers, James G. Blevins, John L. Blevins, Joe P. Blevins, all of Marion, and Howard F. Blevins of Canyon, Texas; two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Cemetery in Marion. Full military rites will be conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

French

Jackie Bryan French Jr., age 28, of Bristol, formerly of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, an avid musician and was a member of the Traveler's Revision Band and Fuzzy Navel.

He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Sturgill French of Bristol; his parents, Anna Lee and Jackie French, Seven Mile Ford; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Heath, Chilhowie; and his paternal grandfather, Carmel French; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial was in the Macedonia Cemetery.

Newberry Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

Gross

William Ralph "Bill" Gross, age 60, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997 at his home in Bloomsburg, Penn.

Mr. Gross was born in Mercer County, W.Va., and grew up in Smyth County. He lived in Waukegan, Ill., and lived in Bloomsburg, Penn., for the past 15 years. He had worked at the Texaco station in Marion as a young man and also at Brunswick. He was employed at American Motors in Waukegan for several years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gross, Bloomsburg, Penn.; two daughters, Bernadine Carouthers and Ellen Gross, both of Waukegan, Ill.; one son, Ralph Gross, Waukegan, Ill.; his mother, Sylvia Gross Gilley, Chilhowie; two sisters, Betty Cramer, Millersport, Ohio, and Josephine Ashbaugh, Waukegan, Ill.; one brother, Robert (Bud) Gross, Waukegan, Ill.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Weston Guthrie officiating. Interment followed in Walker's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
