Ratliff

Algie Belcher Ratliff, age 84, widow of Theodore "Ted" Ratliff, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Grundy Baptist Church, and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Grundy High School and attended State Teachers College in Farmville. She was a member of Eastern Star in Grundy, a member of Grundy Women's Club and the Nimble Thimble Quilt Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Oliver and Mary Jane Looney Belcher; one son, James Theodore Ratliff; and one sister, Eula Belcher Blas.

She is survived by one sister, Mavis Belcher Asbury of South Daytona, Fla.; two brothers, Vernon Belcher of Grundy and Ersel Belcher of Maxie; one grandson, Kristopher Stewart Ratliff of Marion; three great-grandchildren, Kristopher Clark Ratliff, Addison Stewart Ratliff and Bailey Catherine Ratliff, all of Marion.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Pope and the Rev. James Pickens officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Caudell

Cholie M. Caudell, age 63, of Sugar Grove, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was born March 13, 1934 in Troutdale, the daughter of John and Laura Eskridge Shumate.

Surviving are her husband, William "Bill" Caudell of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and George Overland, Wright City, Mo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Wesley and Phyllis Caudell, Sugar Grove; three grandchildren, Jamie Caudell of the home, Michael Caudell, Orlando, Fla., and Rachel Overland, Wright City, Mo.; four sisters and a brother-in-law: Vesta Baldwin, Abingdon, Nervie Blevins, Konnarock, Wadie and Bud Sturgill, Chilhowie, and Okie Shumate, Sugar Grove; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Lacy and Nell Shumate, Pottstown, Penn., Harding and Rita Shumate, Junction City, Kansas, and Carl and Nora Shumate, Old Town, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Grant with the Rev. Charles Bunn and the Rev. Tim Boyette officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes preceding services.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of arrangements.

Farmer

Talmadge Franklin Farmer, age 66, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Farmer was a native of Grayson County and had lived most of his life in Smyth County. He was employed with the Holston River Rock Quarry for many years and with Visador Company for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Farmer; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Farmer, Marion; three brothers, Stacey Farmer and Robert Earl Farmer, both of Marion, and Willis Farmer, Hiawassie; one granddaughter, Victoria Farmer, Marion; several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday,. Dec. 14, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Haw Orchard Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ferguson

Ronald A. Ferguson, age 55, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.

Mr. Ferguson was a Route Man for A.D. Ferguson & Son in Memphis, Tenn., for many years before moving to Marion, where he had been a courier for Federal Express for the last 13 years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an organ donor.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Ferguson of Marion; one daughter, Tracey W.A. Lipford of Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Steven Bradford Ferguson, Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Adele Vanlandingham Ferguson of Searcy, Ark.; one brother, James D. Ferguson Sr., of Searcy, Ark.; two stepdaughters, Tracey Gross and Sharon M. Hart, both of Marion; two stepsons, James Harold Harvey of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Larry Ronald Conway of Marion; 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. James Pollock officiating. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Smyth County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1124, Marion, VA 24354.

Hall

Clara E. Woods Hall, age 86, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997 at her home in Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman G. Hall; a son, Don Hall; and three grandchildren.

She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Bill (Dump) Hanshew, Zana and Jackie Fisher, all of Atkins; Frankie and Harold Minnick of Chilhowie; Brenda H. Blevins and Dorotha H. Elswick, both of Marion; five sons and daughters-in-law: Grant S. Sr. and Olivene Hall, Fred E. and Pricilla Hall, James (Pete) K. and Mary Ann Hall, Ronald R. and Shirley Hall, Willard P. and Sandra Hall, all of Marion; one sister-in-law, Ruby Woods of Marion; a daughter-in-law, Carol Hall of Marion; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Faith Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.B. Arthur, Rev. Mark Lundy, Rev. Dewey Teaster and Pastor Pat Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Heldreth

Thelma Reedy Heldreth, age 82, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 in Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the widow of James R. Heldreth.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Louie Watson, Max Meadows, Barbara and Ollie Farnam, Vinton, and Debra and Michael Spangler of Marion; one son, Richard Heldreth of Marion; one brother, Charles Reedy of Manassas, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Tilley and Dr. William Rodgers officiating.

There will be no flowers, however those who wish may make donations to their favorite charity.

Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville handled the arrangements.

Holmes

Minnie Louise (Abel) Holmes, age 66, of Saltville, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a member of the Church of God, Broadford.

Survivors include her husband, Newman Holmes; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Darlene Holmes, Saltville; six sisters, Helen Kelley and Curtis Vanhoozer, both of Tannersville, Margaret Taylor, Saltville, Elma Palmer, Glade Spring, Oakie Palmer, Marion, and Vernie Smith, Beckley, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Luther Watson and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Jackson

Sadie Viola Jackson, age 87, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at Valley Health Care Center. She was a member of the Chilhowie Church of God and was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Sylvester Jackson.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jackson Lawrence, Chilhowie; two sons, Neil Sylvester Jackson, Chilhowie, and George David Jackson, Marion; two special grandchildren that she raised, Debby Bates, Greensboro, N.C., and Timmy Jackson, Chilhowie; two sisters, Gussie Surber and Marilyn Hicks, both of Glade Spring; two brothers, Matthew Hicks, Norfolk, and Mason Hicks, Marion; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 13, at Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes and the Rev. E.B. Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Newberry Funeral Home in Chilhowie is in charge of arrangements.

Pennington

Margaret Olive "Bird" Pennington, age 67, of Glade Spring, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy, Chilhowie.

Survivors include one son, Donald Pennington, Glade Spring; two daughters, Brenda Wilson, Meadowview, and Kathy Totten, Atkins; two sisters, Ellen Roberts, Maryland, and Elizabeth Neal, Seven Mile Ford; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, in the Church of God of Prophecy, Glade Spring, with the Rev. Geary Jonas and the Rev. Dan Lawson officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.
