Lumpkins

Anna Ruth Lumpkins, age 73, of Rockville, Md., formerly of Marion, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997.

She was a retired waitress and was preceded in death by her husband, Winston W. Lumpkins Jr.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law: Forrest M. Jr. and Brenda Donaldson and Debra K. Lumpkins; two sons and daughters-in-law: Winston W. III and Margaret Lumpkins, and Robert K. and Debbie Lumpkins; her grandchildren: Ward Donaldson, Kevin, Katie, Winston and August Lumpkins; two brothers, Emmett L. Catron and H. Daniel Catron.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, at 1:30 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Frank W. Feather officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

McFarland

Elmer Robert McFarland, age 63, of Atkins, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He is survived by three daughters, Susan McAllister, Covington, Judy Testerman, Chilhowie, and Jennifer McFarland, Marion; two sons, J.D. McFarland, Chilhowie, and Jamie McFarland, Marion; two sisters, Mary Dell Musser, Max Meadows, and Debbie Parks, Rural Retreat; two brothers, R.D. McFarland, and William Franklin McFarland, both of Rural Retreat; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at noon today, Dec. 17, at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rural Retreat.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of arrangements.

Preston

Elsie Gray Preston, age 62, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, graduated from Douglas High School in 1955, and was employed in several factories.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary United Holiness Church, Glade Spring, and was preceded in death by her parents, Trigg and Hannah Preston.

Survivors include two brothers, Daniel T. Preston, Glade Spring, and Monroe D. Preston, Farmville; two sisters, her twin, Della M. Skipper and Margaret A. Davis, both of Virginia Beach; one foster sister, Rachel Arend, Rochester, N.Y.; two aunts, two uncles; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, in Mt. Calvary United Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth Carter, the Rev. Johnny L. Johnson, the Rev. Stephen Fields and the Rev. Danny Belcher officiating. Burial was in Fairview Baptist Cemetery, Glade Spring.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon handled arrangements.

Tibbs

Mamie Sue Tibbs, age 61, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 at her home in Rural Retreat.

Mrs. Tibbs retired from the Marion Headstart Program where she worked as a teacher for 17 years. She graduated from New River Community College in 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Tibbs.

She is survived by four sons: James Settles, David Settles, and Joseph Settles, all of the home, and Billy Settles, Rural Retreat; six daughters, Lois Tibbs, Betty Havens, Bonnie Hutton, all of Atkins, Mary Aliff, Vicky Settles, Bonnie Clark, all of Roanoke; one half brother, James Huff, Bassett; a special friend, Edward Glass; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Webb

F. Warden Webb, age 86, of Glade Spring, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

He was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Glade Spring, where he served as a deacon and attended the General Assembly of Presbytery as a representative in 1957.

He was a charter member of Patrick Henry Young Farmers Club and was a retired Grade A dairy farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth St. John Webb.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Bonnie) Lester and Mrs. Jackie (Martha) Ratcliffe, both of Meadowview, and Mrs. Garland (Margaret) Caywood, Glade Spring; three sisters, Mary Counts and Neta Findley, both of Meadowview, and Irma Wheeler, Hopewell; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren;

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wiley S. Mayo and Dr. Darlene Litton officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Memorial Fund, Grace Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 565, Glade Spring, VA 24340.

Wright

Cathleen S. Wright, age 69, of Glade Spring, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, and attended Ebenezer Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James "Sambo" Wright; three sons, David Wright, Robert Wright and James Henry Wright, all of Glade Spring; three daughters, Virginia Fields, Bristol, Blanche Wright and Mary Alice Wright, both of Glade Spring; one brother, Charles Henry Sawyers, Marion; one sister, Margaret Richardson, West Virginia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 17, in Plum Creek Cemetery in Glade Spring with the Rev. Johnny L. Johnson officiating. The family will meet in the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.

Caudill

L. Garfield Caudill, age 84, of Meadowview, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and attended Meadowview Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was an employee of Washington County Cannery for 22 years and an employee of Sterling Casket Company for several years. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Lou Sanders; and a twin brother, Delmer Caudill.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Hash Caudill; one son, Gilmer Caudill, Seven Mile Ford; one sister, Ada Taylor, Abingdon; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, in Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. Entombment was in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Dickerson

Paul D. "Doug" Dickerson, age 78, of Vinton, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having been a P.O.W. for 13 months in Germany. He was retired from U.S. Steel of Gary, W.Va., with 26 years of service and was a member of the American Ex-Prisoner of War Chapter and the VFW #3028 Anawalt, W.Va. He was a past VFW State Commander of West Virginia from 1977-1978. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Hayes Meredith; a brother, Gordon F. Reed; and a son, Thomas J. Dickerson.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Josephine Tagnesi Dickerson; six children: Larry Dickerson, Colorado Springs, Colo., Susan Dickerson, Harrisonburg, Gary Dickerson, Vinton, Michael Dickerson, New Kent, John and Brenda Dickerson, Roanoke, Mark and Melanie Dickerson, Richmond; five granddaughters, Stacey, Rachel, Ashley, Brittany, and Tracey; a grandson, Joshua; two sisters, Rosamond Tallent, South Charleston, S.C., and Madeline Sprouse, Marion, Texas; a brother, Harry Meredith, Berryville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. in St. Andrews Catholic Church with the Rev. Randy Rule officiating. Entombment with military honors by VFW Post #1264 was in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vinton First Aid Crew.
