Goodman

Judy Anderson Goodman, age 47, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997.

Survivors include her husband, Henry L. Goodman; two sons, Robert McDaniel and Ronald McDaniel; one grandson, Eric Ray McDaniel; her mother, Gladys Ratcliff Anderson; two brothers, David E. Anderson and Gary Wayne Anderson; one sister, Nancy E. Vaught.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Dec. 19, at noon in Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. R.E. Wood officiating. Burial was in Garst Family Cemetery, Catawba Valley.

Lotz Salem Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Hash

W. Major Hash, age 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Hash was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Rouse Hash.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Arlen Sturgill of Chilhowie, and Edith and Don Jones of Peach Tree City, Ga.; three sisters, Nancy Rhudy and Belle Rowland, both of Marion, and Ethel Hash of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, Max Hash of Pleasantville, N.J.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stevens and Pastor Chuck Herrell officiating. Burial will follow in South Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chilhowie Rescue Squad, P.O. Drawer X, Chilhowie, VA 24319.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Lockard

David Edward Lockard, age 39, died at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Mr. Lockard was a native of Smyth County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Marshall Lockard.

He is survived by three sons, David Edward Lockard Jr., Joshua Allen Lockard and Jeremy Stephen Lockard, all of Roanoke; his father, Billy Lockard, Bedford County; a host of other relatives and friends.

A private graveside service was conducted Friday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. in Slemp Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity in memory of David E. Lockard.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Patrick

Ronald Eugene Patrick, age 45, of Jefferson, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Chilhowie on June 24, 1952, to John Edward Patrick and Sarah Heath Patrick, and was a 1970 graduate of Chilhowie High School. He was a member of the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Patrick was store manager at Eckerd's Drug Store, a member and former president of Jefferson Rotary Club, a member and past board member of the Peak Creek Ruritan Club, and was a town alderman.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Goss Patrick of the home; his mother, Sarah Heath Patrick of Chilhowie; one stepson, Rev. Cameron Byrd of Creswell, N.C.; two daughters, Krystal Patrick and Shannon Patrick, both of Marion; one stepdaughter, Stephanie Byrd, Creswell, N.C.; two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Arant and the Rev. Cameron Byrd officiating. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Boone Family Funeral Service Inc., West Jefferson, N.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Surber

Lizzie E. Canter Surber, age 79, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a member of McCready United Methodist Church and a member of Saltville Senior Citizens.

She was the widow of Dale Surber.

Survivors include two sons, Curtis Surber, Des Plaines, Ill., and Ricky Surber, Chilhowie; three sisters, Peggy Mae Olinger, Mechanicsville, Ruth Shortt and Mary Cardwell, both of Saltville; three brothers, Robert Mike Canter, Wellington, Fla., Paul C. Canter, Sandston, and Charles "Buddy" Canter, Glade Spring; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 20, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Ho me Chapel with burial in Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Blevins

Charles Greek Blevins, age 68, of Mouth of Wilson, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his home. Mr. Blevins was born May 9, 1929 at Mouth of Wilson to Willie Lee and Lola Ennice Hill Blevins.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Crowe Blevins; his sister and brother in law, Mary and Virgil Elliott of Mouth of Wilson; a special niece and her husband, Susan and Roger Banks.

Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at Young's Chapel Baptist Church, Mouth of Wilson with internment in Hall Cemetery at Volney. The Rev. Hal Eaton, Rev. Douglas Halsey and Pastor Garland Day will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home tonight from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, care of Mrs. Abigal Boyer, 403 Churchview Lane, Fries, VA, 24330.

military rites will conducted at the graveside by Grayson County VFW Post 7726.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Independence is in charge.

Blevins

Marvin F. Blevins, age 85, of Atkins died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a native of Whitetop and was retired from the County of Fairfax. He attended Whitetop Baptist Church and also Green Cove Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Royal Blevins, Atkins; two daughters, Mary Ann Pitkin, Leesburg, and Erma Thompson, Front Royal; seven sons, Robert Blevins, Saltville, Lee Blevins, Bridgewater, James Blevins, Martinsville, Howard Blevins, Atkins, Lyle Blevins, Saltville, Leonard Blevins, Atkins, and Roger Blevins, Chilhowie; three sisters, Mae Blevins, Green Cove, Ruby Hamm, Groseclose, and Ruth Graham of North Carolina; 37 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery in Whitetop.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew and Rescue Squad.

Gillespie

Levi Preston "Dub" Gillespie, age 81, of Chilhowie died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a retired painter and was a member of Chilhowie Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II under Col. George Patton in the European Theater. He was a member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

He is survived by his wife, Mozell Wright Gillespie, Chilhowie; two daughters, Charlotte Bise, McCalls Gap, and Bonnie Sue Vanhoy, Chilhowie; one son, Harold D. "Butch" Gillespie, Glade Spring; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Herrell and the Rev. Eugene Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow in Middlefork Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Chilhowie Rescue Squad.

Newberry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
