McAllister

Elsie Miller McAllister, age 73, of Damascus, formerly of Whitetop, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997 in Watauga Medical Center, Boone, N.C.

She was a member of Whitetop Baptist Church and a church organist and Sunday School teacher for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil G. McAllister; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Herman L. Jones, Reidsville, N.C., and Joan E. and Jaye B. Baldwin, Whitetop; two stepdaughters, Rita Blythe, Virginia Beach, and Cindy Hayes, Roanoke; two sisters, Beulah Edwards, Hillsville, and Ruby Dillard, Jefferson, N.C.; seven grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, in Whitetop Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Wilson, the Rev. Charles "Jody" Blevins and the Rev. T.A. Pennington officiating.

Interment was in Byars Cemetery.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of arrangements.

Russell

Jessie S. (Jiggs and Homer) Russell, age 65, of Atkins, formerly of Matson Drive, Marion, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Mr. Russell was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and retired from the Marion Bottling Company having worked there for 36 years.

He was of the Baptist faith and worked as a carpenter for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Dove McClure Russell; two daughters, Mrs. William (Carolyn) Hutton, Marion, and Mrs. Dexter (Kathy) Sheets, Chilhowie; one son, Steven Ray Russell, of the home; two brothers, William Thomas Russell, Marion, and Johnny Lee Russell, Chilhowie; five sisters, Virginia Romans, Mabel Young, Peggy Sheffield, all of Marion, Mary Clark, Petersburg, and Louise Lloyd, Roanoke; five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch officiating.

Interment followed in Roselawn Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Seabolt

John Preston Seabolt, age 61, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Smyth County, the son of the late Samuel Seabolt and Effie Carmel Smith Parks.

He is survived by one daughter, Valeria Effie Seabolt, La Center, Ky.; two sons, John Anthony Seabolt, Gaithersburg, Md., and Roger Laine Seabolt, Marion; one stepdaughter, Sharon Sue Crandall, Marion; one stepson, Tommy Lee Ring, Danville, Ill.; one brother, Marion Byrd Seabolt, Rural Retreat; four half-brothers, Bobby Dean Parks, Rural Retreat, Ray Vernon Parks, Kenneth Eugene Parks, and Ancil Perry Parks, all of Wytheville; six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating.

Interment will follow in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rural Retreat.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Wheeler

Winnie W. Wheeler, age 86, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997 at her home in Marion.

Mrs. Wheeler was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. Wheeler Jr.

She was retired from Southwestern State Hospital having worked there for over 10 years.

She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Lewis and Emma Jo Johnson of Marion; one sister, Georgia Richardson, Marion; two grandchildren, Charles L. Johnson and Billy Joe Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Sarah E. Johnson and Britton E. Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 31, in the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William Slater officiating.

Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Widener

Mildred Cole Widener, age 84, of Glade Spring, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a lifelong resident of Widener's Valley, a former member of Masada Methodist Church and a member of Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was a former school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Newton Fitzhugh and Martha Bishop Widener; five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include 10 nephews: Ralph Dean Widener, Donald E. Widener, Samuel L. Widener and Jerry M. Widener, all of Damascus, James Phillip Widener, Las Vegas, Nev., Stanley A. Widener, Hampton, Kermit B. Widener, Bristol, Tenn., Paul Grant Widener Jr., Glade Spring, Larry N. Widener, Spotsylvania, and Michael F. Widener, Phoenix, Ariz.; two nieces, Martha Widener Tolcher, Hampton, Ga., and Nancy Widener Schoffstall, Glade Spring; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Layell and the Rev. R.J. Cullop officiating. Burial was in Bishop-Rush Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Bishop-Rush Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o John M. Bishop, 17241 Colgate Drive, Glade Spring, VA 24340.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

Walter V. Miller

MEADOWVIEW -- Walter V. Miller, 78, of 29265 Lee Highway, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Johnson Memorial Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., a farmer, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Mitchell Miller; two daughters, Barbara M. Popa, Boca Raton, Fla., and Mitchie M. Klint, Marion, Mont.; one son, Ernie H. Miller, Meadowview; three brothers, Roy Miller, Glade Spring, Charlie Miller and Preston Miller, both of Meadowview; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Campbell Funeral Home, Abingdon, is in charge.

Charles G. Nelson

Charles Griffen Nelson, 76, of 147 Wallace Pike, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Edith I. Williams Nelson; three daughters, Shirley Kiser, Bristol, Virginia, Carrie Hudson and Joy Blevins, both of Bristol, Tennessee; four sons, Charles Nelson Jr., and David Nelson, both of Bristol, Virginia, Dale Nelson and Steve Nelson, both of Bristol, Tennessee; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Myrtle F. Riner

HILTONS -- Myrtle Fields Riner, 73, of Route 1, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at her home.

She was a native of Scott County, a homemaker and a member of Lynn Garden Evangelical Methodist Church.

She was the widow of Frank Riner.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Riner Leonard, Hiltons, and Patsy Riner Klubert, Abingdon; five sons, Carl Riner and Kinnith Riner, both of Hiltons, Gene Riner, Church Hill, David Riner, Gate City, and Tommy Riner, Kingsport; two sisters, Peggy Fields Click, Hiltons, and Abbie Fields Sexton, Kingsport; four brothers, John Henry Fields, Hiltons, C.B. Fields and Howard Fields, both of Nickelsville, and L.C. Fields, Kingsport; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, is in charge.
