Paul M. Lester
ABINGDON -- Paul Matheus Jackson Lester, 91, of 19840 McCray Drive, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, having lived most of his life in Glade Spring.
He was a lifelong member of Grace Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher of the men's Bible class and Sunday school superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Mink Lester.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Lacie Ann) Hart, Abingdon; one grandson and his wife, Alan and Cathy Hart, Bristol Tennessee; one granddaughter and her husband, Betty and Larry Bays, Blountville; and four great-grandchildren, Michael and Angela Hart, Bradley and Laura Bays.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Robert Lewis Sr.
CASTLEWOOD -- Robert "Bob" Lewis Sr., 93, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Rendy Hurd Lewis; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Vencill and Mrs. Etta Mae Salyer, both of Lebanon, Va., and Mrs. Ellen Brown, Castlewood; three sons, Robert Lewis Jr. and Tom Lewis, both of Lebanon, and the Rev. Bernard Lewis, Nickelsville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Russell County Funeral Home is in charge.

Sally Pace
PENNINGTON GAP -- Sally Pace, 79, of the Taymont Center, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Lee County Community Hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Lee County.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and step-children.
Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, is in charge.

Barbara J. Parridgen
CLINCHCO -- Barbara J. Parridgen, 61, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Columbia Davis Medical Center, Statesville, N.C.
She had lived in Dickenson County most of her life.
She had been living with her daughter during her recent illness.
She attended Parkdale Baptist Church while in Statesville.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Parridgen, Clinchco; her mother, Jessee Shields, Tunnel Hill, N.C.; seven sons, Curtis Parridgen and Kevin Parridgen, both of Salisbury, N.C., Bobby Parridgen and Christopher Parridgen, both of Hickory, N.C., William Parridgen, Maiden, N.C. and Richard Parrigan, Morgantown, N.C.; one daughter, Lisa Gobble, Salisbury; one brother, Kenneth Caylor, Michigan; one half-brother, David Shields, Ringgold, Ga.; one sister, Bonnie Dawson, Michigan; three half-sisters, Jewell Halbrook, Ocala, Fla., Betty Metts, Florida and Sharon Winters, Dalton, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Clintwood Funeral Home, Clintwood, is in charge.

Melva A. Payne
MARSHALL, N.C. -- Melva Ann Buckner Payne, 77, of 90 Mulberry Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996 in Elderberry Health Care.
She was a native of Madison County and was formerly of Bristol.
She was a member of Red Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Marshall.
Survivors include her husband, Monroe Payne; three sons, Danny Payne and Gary Payne, both of Bluff City, Gene Payne, Weaverville, N.C.; two sisters, Clare Massey, Marshall, Velda Massey, Arden, N.C.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Madison Funeral Home, Inc., Marshall, N.C., is in charge.

Onnie J. Rainey
ABINGDON -- Onnie James "O.J." Rainey, 64, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, at his home.
He was a native of Alabama.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a disabled off-shore oil platform field operator No. 2 for Union Oil Co. of California.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Chaddie Fuller Rainey; two sons, Rodney James Rainey, Redington Beach, Fla. and Butch Rainey; two daughters, Becky Galan, Fostoria, Ohio and Susan Smith, Toledo, Ohio; two sisters, Nell Florence, Powder Springs, Ga. and Aupline Stewart, Toledo, Ohio; three brothers, Jack Rainey and Billy Rainey, both of Powder Springs, Ga. and O.D. Rainey, Seminole, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge.

Henry Ryan
BIG STONE GAP -- The Rev. Robert Henry Ryan, 90, of Wildcat Valley, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, in Lonesome Pine Hospital.
He was a native of Scott County, and lived most of his life in the Big Stone Gap area.
He was retired from Southern States Cooperative.
He was a member and an ordained minister of the Jasper Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Flores Ryan; four sons, Kenneth Ryan, Richmond, Dan Ryan, Wayne Ryan and J.E. Ryan, all of Big Stone Gap; three daughters, Barbara Bays, Kingsport, Beulah Vaughn, Big Stone Gap, and Bernice Cucura, La Plata, Md.; two sisters, Lola Meade, Kingsport, and Emma Creekmore, Richmond; one brother, Samuel N. Ryan, Dungannon, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Helen K. Self
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Helen K. Self, 62, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and attended the Free Pentecostal Assembly Church in Abingdon.
Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Self Sr.; one son, Roy E. Self Jr., Abingdon; her daughter, Helen Ann Morrison, Abingdon; five brothers, Samuel G. Kestner, Douglas L. Kestner, Roger E. Kestner and Bobby H. Kestner, all of Damascus, and Charles H. Kestner, Bristol Virginia; three sisters, Patricia A. Kestner, Abingdon, Brenda K. Garrett, Randallman, N.C., and Linda K. Pruner, Sterling, Ill.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Goldie E. Vanover
GRUNDY -- Goldie Eva Cook Vanover, 91, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Buchanan General Hospital.
She was a native of Buchanan County and had lived in Bristol Virginia from 1977 until 14 months ago when she moved back to Grundy and made her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was a member of East Bristol Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
She was the widow of Tom Vanover.
Survivors include five daughters, Jackie Brown, Bellbrook, Ohio, June Lamb, Waynesville, Ohio, Jo Ann Mounts, Monticello, Ky., Ethel Morgan, Grundy, and Betty Silva, Bristol Virginia; four sons, Bill Vanover, Dayton, Ohio, Paul Vanover, Lebanon, Ohio, Bobby Vanover, Dallas, Texas and Tommy Vanover, Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Florence Helton and Mildred Cook, both of Grundy; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Ila T. Wells
BIG STONE GAP -- Ila Taylor Wells, 72, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a native of Bluff City and had lived in Appalachia and Big Stone Gap most of her life.
Survivors include one son, Terry Wells, Big Stone Gap; one sister, Cleo Vance, Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, George "Baker" Taylor, Leesburg, Va., and Alfred Franklin "Frank" Taylor, Mechanicsville; three grandsons, John, Michael and Richard Wells; and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

William M. Defriece
William M. Defriece, 85, of 1753 Massengill Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and was a former employee of Virginia Woodworking. He was also a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Church Defriece.
Survivors include one daughter, Nadine Yeary, Bristol Tennessee; four granddaughters, Sharon Geiger, Piney Flats, Susie Hagy and Frankie Allison, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Jackie Alyea, Blountville; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
