Ara S. Elsea
Mrs. Ara S. Elsea, 77, of Bristol died Monday, Dec. 16, 1996, in Richmond.
She was the widow of T.J. Elsea.
She attended Three Springs Baptist as a child, attended Belle Meadows Baptist and was a member of East Bristol Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth J., of Atlanta, Wayne Andrew, of Richmond, and Craig A., of Dublin, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. James (Beanice) Buckles and Mrs. Wayne (Gay) Cox, both of Bristol Virginia and four grandchildren.
Bliley Funeral Home, Richmond, Va., is in charge.

Paul Ewing Jr.
PENNINGTON GAP -- Paul Ewing Jr., 59, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, in Lee County Community Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a veteran of the United States Army.
He was a retired employee of the Powell Valley Printing Company.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Ewing; one son, Kevin Ewing, Johnson City; one daughter, Paula Audia, Pennington Gap; one grandson; and one brother, the Rev. Jimmy Ewing, Pennington Gap.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, is in charge.

Warren G. Griffith
CASTLEWOOD -- Warren G. "Twitch" Griffith, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
He was a native of Tazewell County and a resident of Castlewood since 1946.
He was co-owner and operator of Castlewood Farm Supply and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen Jessee Griffith; two daughters, Lois Rosenbaum, Bluff City, and Linda Morrissette, Church Hill; one son, David Morrissette, Castlewood; one sister, Lucy Nash, Richlands; four brothers, Robert Griffith, Castlewood, Jack Griffith and Ed Griffith, both of Centerburg, Ohio and Raymond Griffith, Bluefield, W.Va.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge.

Anthony Hess
JEWELL RIDGE, Va. -- Anthony "Father" Hess, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, in a Richlands hospital.
He was a native of Swords Creek, and had lived in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life.
He was a retired miner of the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation at Jewell Valley.
He was a member of The United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7327 of Jewell Valley and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margaret Smith Hess; one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Noveen, Mt. Jackson, Va.; two sons, Teddy Hess and Roy Hess, both of Henry Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Rachel Whited, Bandy, Va.; one brother, Holland Hess, Swords Creek; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, is in charge.

Ernest S. Holmes
LEBANON -- Ernest S. Holmes, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a retired farmer and mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Susie Boardwine Holmes; one son, Robert Lee Holmes, Pilgrims Knob, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Mae Sword, Chilhowie; four brothers, Earl Holmes, Charlie Holmes and Harmon Holmes, all of Lebanon, and Denny Holmes, Topeka, Kan.
Russell County Funeral Home is in charge.

Jolan R. Justice
PELION, S.C. -- Jolan Rene Justice, 30, of 862 Bushberry Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, S.C.
She was native Detroit, Mich. and moved to Honaker when she was three years old.
She lived in Honaker most of her life until about 10 years ago when she moved to South Carolina.
She was a graduate of Honaker High School and had attended Southwest Virginia Community College.
She held a management position at Auto Zone in Columbia, S.C.
Survivors include her parents, Ferrell Justice, Honaker, and Karen Justice, Little Mountain, S.C.; two brothers, Keith Justice, Little Mountain and Gregory Justice, Lincoln Park, Mich.; four sisters, Donna Wicker, Little Mountain, Wanda Justice, Monroe, Mich., Laura Lee Stiltner, White Mountain, Ariz. and Sherry Castle, London, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Chapin Chapel, Chapin, S.C., Saturday.
Caughman-Harman Funeral Home is in charge.

James O. Large
ABINGDON -- James Oscar Large, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of the Abingdon Church of Christ.
He retired from the logging and coal mining industries.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Wise Large.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Large, Umatilla, Fla., Eddie Large, Washington, D.C., and Michael Large, Abingdon; six daughters, Carol East, Waldorf, Md., Juanita Cartmell, Abingdon, Peggy Jenkins, Peoria, Ariz., Nancy Noonkester, Blountville, Patricia Barton, Vinton, Va., and Teresa Holliday, Damascus; four brothers, Luther Large, Bristol Virginia, Richard Large, Sarasota, Fla., Robert Large, Umatilla, and Dewey Large, Princeton, W.Va.; three sisters, Francis Lilly, Bristol Tennessee, Edna Rust, Bristol Virginia, and Belle Noe, Umatilla; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge. Arrangements are incomplete.

Homer L. Leonard Sr.
Homer Lee Leonard Sr., 73, of 308 Rosewood St., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Bristol Virginia, a World War II veteran and a retired tree surgeon.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Herma Deel Leonard; four daughters, Mrs. Bill (Carolyn) Malone and Darlene Messenger, both of Bristol Tennessee, Mrs. David (Donna) Sneed, Bluff City, and Mrs. Loren (Karen) Kurtz, Franklinton, N.C.; four sons, Homer Lee Leonard Jr., Egegik, Alaska, Gary Leonard, Louisville, Ky., Dennis Leonard, Bluff City, and Joseph Leonard, Blountville; two sisters, Hazel Booher, Bristol Virginia and Beatrice Pickle, Bristol Tennessee; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mavis J. McCoy
Mavis June McCoy, 58, of Leisure Park Towers, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Trammel Gap, Va., and had lived most of her life in Bristol.
She was a member of Holy Church of Truth.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon K. Bryant, Daphne M. Booher and Valerie Lisa McCoy, all of Bristol, Deborah R. Nelson, Blountville; one son, Harold Gene McCoy, Bristol; four sisters, Sylvia Kilgore and Pauline Slemp, both of St. Paul, Yvonne Johnson, Defiance, Ohio and Anne Niner, Maunee, Ohio; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles C. Minor
BIG STONE GAP -- Charles C. "Junkman" Minor, 61, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, in Norton Community Hospital.
He was a native of Wise County, Va. and a retired Senior Master Sgt. of the U.S. Air Force with 20 years of service, retiring in 1971, having served in Vietnam and Europe.
He retired from the Flatwoods Job Corp in 1991, with 20 years of service.
He was a member of the Big Stone Gap VFW No. 5715.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Yoshi Minor; two brothers, Kay Smith, Johnson City and Tommy Swinney, Wise; one aunt, Edith Smith, Big Stone Gap; and several cousins.
Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.
