Bessie Laura Kemble, 82, of Richmond, died Saturday, September 23, 2000. She is survived by her cousin, Robert W. Waite IV of Richmond; and a number of friends. Miss Kemble was a retired legal secretary for Reynolds Metals. She was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. Miss Kemble was a charter member and former secretary of the Scottish Society of Richmond. She made annual visits to Scotland where she had numerous friends with whom she kept in regular contact. Private interment will be in Wenham, Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Shoe Fund or the Shepherd’s Center of Richmond. Debra C. McDaniel of Powhatan passed away Monday, September 25, 2000 after a battle with amyloidosis. A devoted mother and friend, she is survived by her husband, Philip L. McDaniel; and two cherished children, Jacob Philip and Jena Christine McDaniel. Preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Comer, she is also survived by her father, Carlyle P. Comer; two brothers, Philip Comer and Mark Comer; two grandmothers, Julia Altice and Zelpha Comer; and many special friends. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan. Departed this life September 22, 2000 at a local hospital, Arthur Lee Pollard of St. Stephens Church, Va. He is survived by three sons, Charles Pollard of St. Stephens Church, Arthur C. RODGERS
Arthur Nelson Rodgers, 75, entered eternal rest on September 25, 2000. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Eleanor
Carter Rodgers; his son, Nelson DeRay Rodgers; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen M. Rodgers; and his grandchildren are Amanda Leigh Redden and Arthur Nelson Rodgers II. He is also survived by a host of nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ray Vandiver Rodgers of Urbanna, Va. and Douglas Wylie Rodgers of Orlando, Fla. Mr. Rodgers was a WWII US Navy veteran having enlisted after he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1942. He fought in the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaigns aboard the USS Snowden and USS Newman K. Perry and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He retired after 37 years as a systems engineer with IBM, during which time he had managed Far East Engineering while based in Tokyo, Japan and had worked on development of the original IBM Personal Computer at research labs in North Carolina and Florida. Mr. Rodgers was a member of the Swift Creek Baptist Church in Midlothian, Va. He was also a member of Clover Hill Masonic Lodge # 02523 in Mosely, Va. and formerly a member of Lodge # 83 in Urbanna, Va. His other memberships include Sons of Confederate Veterans, R.E. Lee Camp, Richmond, Va., The Stuart-Mosby Society and The military Order of the Stars and Bars. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment to follow at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Dorothy Davidson Saunders, 86, of Richmond, widow of Stuart T. Saunders, former Chairman of Penn Central Railroad, died September 25, 2000. She is survived by her children, Stuart T. Saunders Jr. of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Laura S. Spratley of Richmond, Jesse D. Saunders of Cochranville, Pa. and William T. Saunders of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; six grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter. Mrs. Saunders was a graduate of Randolph Macon Woman’s College. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Hazel Pitts Sharpe of Henrico, widow of Vernon F. Sharpe, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2000. She is survived by her loving children, Donald E. Sharpe and Gloria Jean Akers; also two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sharpe was a member of New Highland Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was an employee of Consolidated Cigar Co. and Thalhimers Department Store. Her remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E.
