Jerry L. Gillenwater
DUNGANNON, Va. -- Jerry Lee Gillenwater, 54, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.
He was an auto body technician and was of the Baptist faith.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietname War.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Ryan Gillenwater, Boonsboro, Md.; two daughters, Denise Ann Ringley, Williamsport, Md. and Missy Lynn Prior, Cameron, N.C.; one brother, Jeffrey Logan Gillenwater, Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Judy Heitmuller, Fort Collins, Colo. and Jackie Loduca Penbroke, Pines, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn, is in charge.

Joyce L. Lockhart
HONAKER -- Mrs. Joyce Lee Lockhart, 78, of the New Garden Road section, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, in a Kingsport hospital.
She was a native of Buchanan County, Va.
She had lived most of her life in the Honaker area and was a member of the Independence Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Beecher B. Lockhart.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Maxfield, Honaker; one brother, Emory Howard Sykes, Blountville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge.

Harmon W. Logan
GLADE SPRING -- Harmon W. "Jack" Logan, 84, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County.
He was a former employee of the Glade Spring Vance Co. for about 20 years and had been a Grade A Dairy farmer for 30 years.
He was a member of the Byars Cobbs United Methodist Church and had served as an officer in the Men's Bible Class.
He was a charter member of the Glade Spring Lions Club while it was in Glade Spring, a charter member of the Glade Spring Fire Department and a member of the Interstate Bowl.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eva Grubb Logan; one niece, Sue Eastman King, Richmond; two nephews, Curtis Logan, Pulaski, Va. and Cecil Logan, near Washington, D.C.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Mildred L. Moore
MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. -- Mildred Leano Mullins Moore, 72, of 423 East Main Street, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, in Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was a native of Laredo, W.Va. and came to this area at an early age.
She had also lived in Knoxville for a while.
She was owner//operator of Midfields Exxon and had retired from Sears.
She was the widow of C.S. Moore.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Sandra D. Jarrett, Kingsport; one son, Charlie S. Moore, Knoxville; three granddaughters, Michelle Peters, Melissa Moore and Charla Jarrett; two great-granddaughters, Chandler Peters and Larissa Ramirez; one brother, Dale Mullins; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport, is in charge.

Mabel G. Powers
MARION -- Mabel Gwyn Powers, 83, of Route 3, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Francis Marion Manor.
She was the widow of Avery Isacc Powers and a member of the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Howard (June) Richardson, Marion; one son, Carson L. Powers, Marion; one brother, Clarence Powers, Chilhowie; five sisters, Virginia Heath, Grey Grinstead and June Brinkley, all of Chilhowie, May Gibson, Aliceville, Ala. and Dorothy Pollard, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

Betty E. Robinson
LEBANON, Va. -- Mrs. Betty Elizabeth Robinson, 82, of the Hansonville Community, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Maui, Hawaii, but lived most of her life in Russell County with her family.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley "Pete" Robinson; three daughters, Jean Jordan, Lebanon, Barbara Chafin, Bristol Virginia and Geraldine Phelps, Bristol Tennessee; two sons, Robert Robinson, Abingdon, and Dave Robinson, Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Russell County Funeral Home is in charge.

Herbert I. Sachs
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- Herbert I. Sachs, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997.
He was a native of New York City and had lived in Henderson County for 10 years.
Before moving to Hendersonville, he had lived in Puerto Rico and Key West.
He served in the New York State, 71st Regiment, Company D, during World War I.
He was later associated with S. Sachs and Sons of New York and Puerto Rico, the Guild Record, the U.S. Office of Price Stabilization, Music Craft, Dumont Television and Capitol Records, from which he retired in 1969.
He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Elizabeth McDonald Sachs.
Survivors include his wife, Bettye S. H. Sachs; three stepdaughters, Elizabeth McDonald Irwin, Westfield, Mass., Mrs. W. E. (Lucy Sears) Seaver III, Bristol Virginia and Susan Sears Griffin, Hendersonville; one stepson, William S. Hawkins, Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Mrs. Sidney Weil, New York City; one nephew; and seven grandchildren.
Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home, Hendersonville, is in charge.

J. Stuart Staley
MARION -- Dr. J. Stuart Staley, 90, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, at his home.
He was a native of Elkhorn, W.Va.
He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Tulane University School of Medicine.
Upon completion of his residency and internship, he returned to Marion and opened Homeland Hospital, the first hospital in Marion.
During World War II, he served in both the North African and European theaters and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service.
He served from 1947 to 1953 as a medical missionary in India. In the mid 1950s, he purchased Lee Memorial Hospital and operated it until the early 1960s when his dream of a modern hospital facility came to fruition with community support and leadership in the establishment of Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was active in community affairs and served as mayor of Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Thomas Staley; two sons, Joseph Stuart Staley Jr. and Emmitt Denton Staley, both of Marion; and eight grandchildren.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service, Marion, is in charge.

Elmer L. Walls
KONNAROCK, Va. -- Elmer Lee "Big Jim" Walls, 73, of Route 2, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He attended Azen Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Moore Walls; two stepdaughters, Francis Smith and Joann Allison, both of Glade Spring; four sisters, Lucille Russell, Joppa, Md., Magdalene Testerman, Laurie, Md., Ora Mae Wilson, Mountain City, and Lois Walls, Edgewood, Md.; three brothers, Earnest Walls, Marion, Jack Walls, Oxford, Pa., and Dean Walls, Damascus; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Johnson Funeral Home, Damascus, is in charge.

Albert L. Walsh
ABINGDON -- Albert L. Walsh, 77, of the Westhaven Retirement Living Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997.
He was a native of Abingdon, and had lived most of his life in the Bristol area.
He was a retired self-employed paint contractor.
He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Waller, Chicago, Ill.; five sisters, Gladys Griffith, Greenfield, Ind., Sylvia Hutson, Kingsport, Estelle Giggs, Gray, Tenn., Berta Lyon, Greeneville, Tenn. and Nina Crane, Bluff City; two brothers, Jim Walsh, Townsend, Tenn. and Paul Walsh, Bluff City; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.
