Odell R. McConnell
KINGSPORT -- Odell R. McConnell, 58, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was a native of Scott County and a retired farmer and was also retired from Arcadia Graphics.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy McConnell; one daughter, Stephanie McConnell, Kingsport; two sons, Mike McConnell, Ft. Blackmore, Va., and Bill McConnell, Kingsport; two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Vivian Novella) White, Nickelsville, Va., and Mrs. James (Louella) Shipley, Kingsport; one brother, Gene McConnell, Bluff City; one granddaughter; one grandson; one step-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Gate City Funeral Home is in charge.

Milton A. Owens
ABINGDON -- Dr. Milton A. Owens, 71, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Dickenson County and had lived in Abingdon for the past 40 years, where he had a private dentistry practice.
He was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, Abingdon.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Emory & Henry College and later attended the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the USS Dade where he performed in a Bluegrass Band.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Mullins Owens; two sons, Dr. Gregory Owens and Michael Owens, both of Abingdon; one daughter, Sandra Smeltzer, Salem, Va.; two brothers, Francis Owens, Birchleaf, Va., and Buford Owens, Wayne, Mich.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Amney B. Pennell
RICHMOND -- Amney Bell Pennell, 87, formerly of Clintwood, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997, in Columbia Chippenham Hospital.
She had lived in Richmond with a daughter, Lillian Pugh, for the past four years and was of the Baptist faith.
She was the widow of Ruff Pennell.
Survivors include two sons, Lincoln Pennell, Clintwood, and Algar Pennell, Winchester, Va.; two daughters, Lillian Pugh, Richmond, and Lucille Hoffman, Clintwood; one adopted daughter, Mary Ann Witt, Clintwood; two half-brothers, John Calvin Baker and William Baker, both of Michigan; one half-sister, Almedia Baker, New Jersey; 35 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Clintwood Funeral Home, Clintwood, is in charge.

Hazel T. Powers
MARION -- Hazel Taylor Powers, 89, of Route 5, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Smyth County.
She was the widow of Vaughn J. Powers and a member of the Parkers Chapel.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bud (Ethel B.) Ashby, Chilhowie; six sons, Howard Richardson, Earl G. Powers, the Rev. Joe D. Powers, Jessie Blain Powers and V.J. Powers, all of Marion, and Ronnie F. Powers, Chilhowie; two sisters, Blanche Stamper, Chilhowie, and Grace Martin, Chicago, Ill.; 37 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Azel Scott
SALTVILLE, Va. -- Azel "A" Scott, 75, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a resident of the Hayter's Gap Community, where he operated the A.E. Scott Grocery for many years.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Kennedy Scott; one daughter, Mitzi J. Burkett, Mesa, Ariz.; three brothers, Sunshine Scott and Clyde Scott, both of Abingdon, and Bascom Scott, Palmyra, Va.; two sisters, Cleo Mays and Shirley Hagy, both of Abingdon; and one granddaughter.

Thomas T. Smith
MARION -- Thomas Taylor Smith, 83, formerly of Marion, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in the South Fulton Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.
He had lived most of his life in the Marion area before moving to Atlanta for the past year and a half.
He was a graduate of Bluefield State College.
He worked as a brickmason in the Marion and Wytheville areas, having been a part of the construction of many buildings in the downtown area.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Smith, Atlanta; two daughters, Sandra Moody and Tomasina Barnes, both of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Karen Barnes, and Shelli Barnes, both of Atlanta; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

Mollie D. Tester
BLUFF CITY -- Mrs. Mollie Denton Tester, 79, of 727 Egypt Road, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., and a member of First Baptist Church, Bluff City.
Survivors include her husband, Ulysses E. Tester; two sons, Ronnie Denton, Blountville, and Sid Tester, Bluff City; one daughter, Mrs. William (Peggy Denton) Simons, Bristol Tennessee; one brother, William "Bill" Hyatt, Bristol Tennessee; four granddaughters; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City Chapel, Bluff City, is in charge.

Carson Thompson
HONAKER -- Carson Thompson, 84, of the Town Square Apartments, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 at his home.
He was a native of Russell County and had lived in the Honaker area most of his life.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary M. Ward
NEW LEBANON, Ohio -- Mary Magdalene Stanley Ward, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997.
She had lived in Keokee and Exeter, Va., and most recently in New Lebanon with her daughter, Bobbie Johnson.
She was of the Pentecostal faith.
She was the widow of Ode Ward.
Survivors include one daughter, Bobbie Johnson, one grandson, one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; five sisters, Elizabeth Bledsoe, Juanita Blair, Dixie Garrison, Ruby Williams and Lillie Clark; one brother, Hobert Stanley; and several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth J. Whitaker
Ruth Johnson Whitaker, 76, of 1212 Holston Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, at her home.
She was a native of Hartford, Conn., and had lived in Bristol for more than 50 years.
She was a retired employee of Sperry-Univac and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Sidney Whitaker; one daughter, Mrs. Harold H. (Barbara Johnson) Holt, Kingsport; two sons, Thomas Edward Johnson, Bristol Virginia, and Charles Harold Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Esther Richards, West Hartford, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth E. Wilson
Mrs. Ruth E. Wilson, 85, of Bristol Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was currently a resident of Westhaven Retirement Living in Abingdon.
She was a native of Mocksville, N.C., but had lived most of her life in Washington County, Va.
She was a longtime member of Rosedale Baptist Church and was the widow of Summers Wilson.
Survivors include two sons, Rex Wilson, Raleigh, N.C., and Jerry L. Wilson, Bristol Virginia; three daughters, Emma Kate Cook, Hendersonville, Tenn., Roma Baker, Bristol Virginia, and Doris Crawford, Richmond; three brothers; and four sisters; 12 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
