ELIZABETHTON -- Mrs. Juanita Howell, 88, of Route 11, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a native of Hot Springs, N.C. and had lived in Elizabethton since 1952.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Henry M. Howell.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ray (Barbara Marie) Buck, Mrs. Terry (Helen) Miller and Nancy Tipton, all of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Lyle (Donna) Lowry,
Johnson City; five sons, Charles Howell, Naomi, W.Va., Junior Howell, Marion, Ind., James R. Howell, Bristol Tennessee, Jack Howell, Elizabethton, and Jerry Howell, Portland, Ore.; one sister, Alma Buckner, Gastonia, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charlie Lane
RICHLANDS,Va. -- Charlie "Fuzz" Lane, 69, of the Eagle Trailer Park, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital.
He was a native of Wise County and a lifelong resident of the Richlands area.
He was a retired miner of the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation at Jewell Valley and was of the Holiness faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Frances Jeanette Hill Lane.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Blankenship, Mrs. Linda Coleman and Mrs. Geneva Rose, all of Richlands, and Mrs. Connie Stilwell, Doran, Va.; one son, Scotty Lane, of the home; one step-daughter, Mrs. Sandra Jessie, Christiansburg, Va.; one step-son, Roger Jessie, Christiansburg; his mother, Mrs. Ida Maye Hunley Lane Sims, Belfast, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Lois Proffitt, Doran, Va.; 30 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Leroy W. Light
KINGSPORT -- Leroy W. Light, 81, of 1308 South Eastman Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was employed with Tennessee Eastman Co. for 42 years retiring in 1978.
He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and attended Depew's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Eastman Camping Club.
Survivors include his wife, Eloise Good Light; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Kay) Baker, Kingsport; one son, Bob Light, Bristol Tennessee; one sister, Mrs. James C. (Dorothy) Henry, Piney Flats; one brother, George Lynn Light, Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carl Looney
EMORY, Va. -- The Rev. Carl Looney, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in Valley Health Care Center.
He was a native of Buchanan County. He received his local preaching license in Richlands June 25, 1925 and preached his first sermon that August.
He graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1929, attended Asbury Seminary in Kentucky, and graduated from Candler School of Theology in Atlanta.
He served in the West Virginia and Holston Conferences as a pastor and Conference Evangelist holding over 460 revivals.
In 1977, he was awarded the DeFriece Award at Emory & Henry College and was the first recipient of the Looney Humanitarian Award.
In 1969, he and his wife, Ruth established the Looney foundation to work with leprosy, Bible translation and other mission ministries. They had raised over a million dollars for projects all around the world.
He had written three books: Touching Jesus and Other Sermons, Pilgrimage to the Lands of the Bible and Sixty Years of Preaching and Pastoring.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Looney.
Survivors include two sons, Bishop Richard Carl Looney, Macon, Ga., and the Rev. David Bruce Looney, Ruskin, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Ruth Hampton, Piscataway, N.J.; and nine grandchildren, Teresa, David, Jonathan, Virginia, Rebecca, Arthur, Erin, Donna and Cindy; and two great-grandchildren.

Ralph C. Maples Sr.
COEBURN -- Ralph C. "R.C." Maples Sr., 70, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was a native of Banner, Va., and was a lifelong resident of the Banner Community.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of United Mine Workers of America, Local Union No. 1256 and Coeburn Masonic Lodge No. 97 AF&AM, Coeburn.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Huff Maples; one son, Ralph C. Maples Jr., Castlewood; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Flossie) Porter, Meadowview, Mrs. Daniel (Carolyn) Swanson, Cincinnati, Ohio and Mrs. Danny (Susan) Brooks, Coeburn; one sister, Marie Holbrooks, Dante, Va.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Beulah McCurdy
Ms. Beulah McCurdy, 82, of Bristol Tennessee, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in Bristol Nursing Home.
She was of the Holiness faith and was a native of Taylorsville, N.C., but had lived most of her life in the Bristol area.
Survivors include one son, John McCurdy, Roanoke; two daughters, Mrs. Elaine M. Foster, Bristol Tennessee and Mrs. Louvenia M. Moffitt, Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Estelle Thompson, Charlotte; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mary E. Morrell
BLOUNTVILLE -- Mrs. Mary Ester Morrell, 91, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, a retired Sullivan County teacher with 44 years of service and a member of the Blountville United Methodist Church.
She was the widow of Earl Morrell.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Vernoy L. Phillips
POUND -- Vernoy L. Phillips, 54, of 6822 Short Creek Road, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at his home.
He was a member of Baker-Stallard Memorial Church and a disabled coalminer of Eastern Dominion Coal Company.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Harris Phillips; three sons, Haskel Phillips, Pound, Jackie Phillips, Pound, and Dale Boardwine, Wise; two brothers, Hassell "JR" Phillips, Pound, and Elmer Philips, Front Royal, Va.; three sisters, Ola Maggard and Elvia Vanover, both of Pound, and Gay Moore, Axton, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

MARION -- Louise Wolfe Slate, 89, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of Troy Slate and one of the founders of the Saltville Baptist Church.
She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She was an active member of the Marion Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Peggy Moser Slate, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Ellis S. "Bud" Viers, 53, of Bristol Tennessee, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was formerly from Grundy where he had lived for most of his life.
He was a member of the Grundy Baptist Church and attended the Virginia Highlands Community Fellowship, Abingdon.
He was a former member of the Willowbrook Country Club, Breaks, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Nancee Sharon Clevinger Viers; three sons, Greg Viers, Knoxville, Scott Smith, Fort Dix, N.J., and Bryan Smith, Bristol Tennessee; one daughter, Robyn Clevinger, Buford, S.C.; his parents, Ellis and Irene Viers, Abingdon; three sisters, Betty O'Brien, Grundy, Connie Stiltner, Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Patricia Shanklin, Abingdon; seven grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.
