Warren Rutledge is dead at age 69
Benedictine teams had 949 victories
Sep 22, 2000
Coach's ideals stood test of time. Paul Woody's column, Page E1.
Benedictine High School basketball legend Warren S. Rutledge, the winningest high school coach in Virginia history, is dead. He was 69.
Mr. Rutledge, known throughout the area high school community and to legions of friends as "Coach Rut" or "Rut," died Thursday after suffering a massive stroke in his hotel room Wednesday morning while on a golf trip in Birmingham, Ala.
After graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1957, Mr. Rutledge was hired by Benedictine to teach math and coach.
When he retired from coaching in May, his basketball teams had won 949 games and lost 334 in 43 seasons. He ranks seventh in wins on the national list compiled by the National High School Sports Record Book.
Mr. Rutledge also served as Benedictine's athletic director for 41 years.
Sunday and Monday, he was the target of a roast and was the host of a golf tournament to endow a scholarship honoring his contributions to Benedictine.
More than $150,000 was raised, according to events chairman Jack Cullather, a longtime friend.
"He had just had three of the best days of his life," said Cullather, who accompanied Mr. Rutledge on the golf trip. "He had a great round of golf [Tuesday at Shoal Creek Country Club] and won the money on the 18th hole. . . . This happened the way he would have wanted it to happen."
Mr. Rutledge was discovered in his bedroom after he didn't appear for breakfast Wednesday morning. Rescue squad paramedics took him to a Birmingham hospital where surgery was performed to relieve swelling in the brain. He was removed from life support yesterday.
Mr. Rutledge suffered a small stroke in December and missed six games. He announced his retirement because of health reasons in May. He had another stroke in July and was still undergoing rehabilitation therapy, but it didn't hamper his competitive drive or keep him away from his passions: golf, card-playing and cigars.
"The No. 1 thing, and I don't care if it's flipping for a beer or on a $2 Nassau, is, he's the grindingest, most competitive person I've been around," former player Augie Lange said in a 1996 Times-Dispatch article celebrating the beginning of Mr. Rutledge's 40th year as coach.
Lange also was on the Birmingham trip.
During Mr. Rutledge's tenure, the Cadets won 26 State Catholic titles, the last one coming this year. Thirty-two teams won 20 or more games in a season, and he had only three losing seasons. Four times the Cadets won the Benedictine Capital City Classic, a holiday tournament Mr. Rutledge began 34 years ago to spotlight some of the top high school talent in the country.
He went through countless white towels that he kept draped over his shoulder, clutched in his hand or balled up and thrown on the floor when a call didn't go his way during games.
Mr. Rutledge lost his first two games and the last one. The first victory came on Dec. 18, 1957, against Manchester.
"That was a very exciting evening. When you start out 0-2, I wasn't sure when we'd get a victory," Mr. Rutledge said in the 1996 Times-Dispatch article.
Hundreds of young men came under his tutelage. He coached multiple members of families. The 1971-74 teams featuring John Kuester, Mark Crow and Les Henson won 95 games in a row against state competition.
Kuester and Lange were among the guests who roasted Mr. Rutledge at Sunday night's tribute party.
"Thank God, we had time to say thank you," said Jeff Roberts, Benedictine's director of development.
Among the survivors are his wife, Betty Lou; a son, Warren Jr.; and a daughter, Debbie Ochs of Fairfax. Funeral arrangements are pending.
