HOUCK
Ronald James Houck, husband extrordinaire, devoted son and "coolest boss in the world" (according to his employees), left us unexpectedly--and way too early--on October 2, 2001. Ron, a native of Washington, D.C. graduated from Good Counsel High School and attended the University of Maryland and Virginia Commonwealth University. He was also a member of the U.S. Army. After his enlisted duty, he served as a kitchen-facilities designer for the Army, preparing him for his eventual career path: restauranteur. With little retail experience but with much heart and optimism, Mr. Houck purchased the Bamboo Cafe with a partner in 1982. He built the business and created one of the "founding eateries" comprising Restaurant Row on West Main Street. In 1992, he and his partner, Peter W. Harahan, opened Avalon Restaurant. Through his and his staff's hard work, Avalon received critical acclaim and along with other pioneer restaurants brought cuisine to a new level in our city. Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Duda Houck; and his brother, Richard Houck. He is survived by his wife, Anita M. Ehrmantraut; his father, Allen M. Houck; his sister-in-law, Paula Houck; and 14 members of his wife's family. All loved him dearly and will miss him profoundly. A visionary, an entrepreneur, a proud Republican and one funny man, Ron left everyone he met a little happier--a gift we will all miss. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph St. Those who wish to join in a celebration of his life are invited to the Avalon Restaurant after the service.
