Virginia B. McElyea
NORTON -- Virginia B. McElyea, 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in St. Mary's Hospital.
She was a native of Lee County, Va. and was a resident of Big Stone Gap for 36 years before living with her daughter, Peggy, in Norton, for the past two years.
She was a member of Big Stone Gap OES No. 157 and the Lonesome Pine Rebekah Lodge No. 30.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Big Stone Gap.
She was the widow of Carl B. McElyea.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Hammonds, Norton; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

Carmie R. McGlothlin
ABINGDON -- Carmie Rasnake McGlothlin, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a native of Washington County, Va., and had lived in Dickenson County before moving to Abingdon in 1963.
She was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of her first husband, James Marion Rasnake and her second husband, Eugene McGlothlin.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Billy (June) Lester, Mrs. Gary (Lynn) Thompson and Mrs. Charlie (Annette) Branch, all of Abingdon, and Mrs. Ray (Nadine) Wagner, Danville, Va.; five sons, Dentin Dewel Rasnake, Madison Heights, Mich., William David Rasnake, Lebanon, Graham Kenneth Rasnake, Clyde Elmer Rasnake and James Phillip Rasnake, all of Abingdon; one sister, Mrs. Lois Martin, Richlands; 18 granddaughters; 16 grandsons; 41 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Campbell Funeral Home, Abingdon, is in charge.

Elee L. Messick
RAVEN, Va. -- Elee Leonard Messick, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in a Tazewell hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County and was a retired coal miner.
He was retired from Jack Sykes Chevrolet, Richlands. He was a member of Fork Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the UMWA.
Survivors include his wife, Nannie Rosie Osborne Messick; three sons, Hallie Messick, Doran, Va., Randel Messick, St. Louis, Ill., and Joe Messick, Goldsboro, N.C.; three daughters, Juanita Stafford and Beulah Arms, Columbus, Ga., and Carol Keen, McGuire Valley, Va.; one brother, "T.H." Messick, Raven; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, is in charge.

Raymond K. Milhorn
BLUFF CITY -- Raymond K. "Swifty" Milhorn, 85, of 1341 Egypt Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, in the V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was a native of Piney Flats, and was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County.
He was a member of Bluff City United Methodist Church and Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge No. 4344 and was a charter member of Bluff City Chapter 414 order of the Eastern Star.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 145.
He retired from Tennessee Eastman after almost 40 years of employment.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Hicks Milhorn; four sisters, Zella Hicks and Juanita Carty, both of Piney Flats, Mona Smith, Bristol, Tennessee and Virginia Mae Combs, Bluff City; two brothers, Ivan Milhorn, Bluff City, and R.B. Milhorn, Bristol, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth W. Mooney
COEBURN -- Ruth White Mooney, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
She was the widow of her first husband, Lee White and her second husband, Harve Mooney.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and attended St. Mary's Catholic church, Coeburn.
Survivors include one daughter, Hortense "Teresa" Mooney, Coeburn; five sons, James Mooney, John H. Mooney, Raymond "Tarzan" Mooney, Robert Mooney and Frank Mooney, all of Coeburn; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dewey Phillips
BIG STONE GAP -- Dewey T. Phillips, 60, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in Wise-Appalachian Regional Hospital, Wise.
He was a native of Scott County and had lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap.
He was formerly employed by the former Don Wax Mobile Homes.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lona Mae Jackson Phillips; two daughters, Tammy Poole, Pennington Gap, and Robin Phillips, Appalachia, Va.; four grandchildren; three sisters, Madeline King and Gloria Mullins, both of Big Stone Gap, and Brenda Wells, Richmond; two brothers, Charles Phillips, Bristol, Tennessee and Bobby Phillips, Big Stone Gap; and several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

Clarence H. Plaster
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Clarence Howard "C.H." Plaster, 57, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, at his home.
He was retired from Civil Service at Maxwell Air Force Base and was formerly of Johnson City.
He had lived in Montgomery for over ten years and was a member of the Broadway Church of God, Montgomery.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Johnson Plaster; one daughter, Katherine "Kathy" Dobbs, Montgomery; one granddaughter; three sisters, Lena Hicks and Maxine Alexander, both of Johnson City, and Jackie Street, Jonesborough, Tenn.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

Gary Porter
WEBER CITY, Va. -- William Gary Porter, 52, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was a native of Scott County and a 1962 graduate of Gate City High School.
He was retired from Quebecor Printing Company for 22 years.
He was a member of the Kingsport Moose Lodge No. 972 and FOE 3141 in Kingsport.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Jeffery Porter, Gate City; one granddaughter, Amanda Jo Porter, Gate City; and one sister, Joann Dingus, Weber City.
Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, is in charge.

Freddie S. Pyle
MESA, Ariz. -- Freddie Solomon Pyle, 100, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996.
She was a native of Bulls Gap, Tenn., and had lived in Bristol most of her life.
She had spent winters in Arizona for 15 years and had lived there for the past two years.
She was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church since 1903, where she was active in the United Methodist Women.
She was the widow of Hugh D. Pyle.
She was associated with The Faucette Company for over 40 years and was the bridal consultant and buyer of silver, crystal and fine china.
She had been a member of the Border City Chapter 162, Order of Eastern Star, for over 60 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. J.F. (Nancy Pyle) Fogleman, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Evelyn Karakos, Kingsport, Dorothy Wolfe, Marion, and Ona Flick, Oak Ridge; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Otto C. Ries
BIG STONE GAP -- Otto Christian Ries, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville.
He was a native of Flushing, N.Y. and had lived in Big Stone Gap since 1970. He was a retired butcher for A&P Grocers in New York.
He was a member of Cornucopia Masonic Lodge No. 563 AF&AM, Whitestone, N.Y.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Lutheran faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Blondell Ries.
Survivors include three nieces, Jacqueline Orth and Susan Orth, both of Knoxville, and Mary Lou Orth, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several other nieces and nephews.
