KOPET
Isidore "Irving" Kopet, 85, of Richmond, died October 3, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Mildred; his daughter and son-in-law, Sondra and Arthur Horwitz; his son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Robin Kopet; his grandchilddren, Julie and Eric Horwitz and David and Rachel Kopet; his sisters, Betty Dalleo and Rose DeBate; and his brother, Al Kopet. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Kopet was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was retired from United Parcel Service and American Tobacco Company. He volunteered for 17 years in the medical records department of St. Mary's Hopsial, the Jewish Family Services and the Telephone Reassurance Program. He served as program chairman in the Grand Group of the JCC for 10 years and entertained with the Grand Tones singing group of the JCC at different nursing homes and churches in the Richmond area. He is being honored posthumously as Volunteer of the Year at the Jewish Family Services on Thursday. Mr. Kopet was a member of B'nai Shalom Bethel and Keneseth Beth Israel Temples. Graveside funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2001, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave. The family will receive friends immediately after services at the home of Mildred Kopet. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Keneseth Beth Israel.

LAYNE
Howard W. Layne Sr., 91, of Highland Springs, died October 3, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Layne. He is survived by two sons, Howard W. Layne Jr. and John Barry Layne; a daughter, Jacqueline Spencer of Prattville, Ala.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Fairmount Christian Church, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

OWENS
LEIDOLF Diane Owens Leidolf of Louisa, Va., passed away on September 30, 2001. She was the daughter of Katherine and the late Richard Hill. Diane grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from Washington and Lee High School in 1966. She is survived by her husband, Harbison Leidolf; her brothers, Ricky, Ronnie and Bryan; and sister, Kimberly; as well as her daughter, Nancy "Mouse" Barry; her granddaughter, Haley; and her grandson, Carson. Friends will gather Saturday, October 6, at 4 p.m. at 5100 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. (804)747-1014. She cared deeply for animals; thus donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to the Louisa Animal Shelter.

POE
Lawrence R. Poe, 89, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Beaufont Healthcare Center. Born in Albermarle County, Va. and also residing in Arvonia, Va., he had been a Richmond resident for 59 years. Mr. Poe retired from Richmond Engineering Co. after 36 years of service. He was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church since 1942. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Helen R. Poe; one son, Lewis R. Poe of Hampton, Va.; two granddaughters, Pat Hutchinson of Goochland and Donna Poe of Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

PUCKETT
Jewell Pike Puckett, 72, of Chesterfield, widow of Fred Puckett, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001. She was retired from American Tobacco Co. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Wayne Totty of Chesterfield; granddaughter, Tracey Simmons and her husband, Fred Simmons; great-granddaughter, Lauren Simmons, all of Chester; and brother, J.L. Pike of Decatur, Ala. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Edna P. Puryear of Baskerville died Wednesday, October 3, 2001. Survived by her husband, W. Allen Puryear; daughter, Kimberly Clark of Harrisburg, Pa.; son, Chris Clark of Palmer Springs; two sisters, Brenda T. Harris and Pamela T. Szurek; her mother, Dorothy Tanner, all of South Hill; two grandchildren, Crysta and Cameron Coone of Union, S.C. Services Friday 11 a.m. in Olive Branch Baptist Church in Blackridge. Interment church cemetery. Visitation Thursday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Memorial contributions to the R.T. Arnold Library, 110 E. RUCKER
Mrs. Patsie Bowe Rucker, age 86, died October 3, 2001 in Farmville. The widow of Richard E. Rucker, she is survived by one niece and several nephews. The family will receive friends after 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service, 11 a.m., Saturday at Doyne, Burger, Davis Funeral Home Chapel, Farmville. Interment Westview Cemetery. Remembrances to the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad.

SCHOOLS
Margaret Lewis Schools, 86, of Farnham, died October 2, 2001. Surviving are her husband, William H. Schools; four daughters, Jean S. Swann and husband, Lewis Swann of Callao; Mary Betty Headley and husband, Robert Headley Sr. of Warsaw, Lillian Bell Hamblin and husband, Ira Hamblin of Warsaw, and Margaret I. Schools of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Evelyn Burgess and Dwight Sanford, both of Alexandria; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a devoted family friend, Mary Jean Hamilton of Heathsville. Mrs. Schools was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Spicer. Funeral services 2 p.m. Friday at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood. Interment Jerusalem Baptist Church, Emmerton. SPENCER
Henry S. Spencer, M.D., 79, of Old Church, Va., died on October 2, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lena Mae Hale Spencer; his son, James Boyd Spencer and daughter-in-law, Lois Spencer of Sandy Point, Va.; four grandchildren, Jane Campbell Spencer of Washington, D.C., Gregory and Dorothy Spencer Suskind of Richmond and Alice Booker Clay of Urbanna; and three siblings, Samuel Spencer of Lakeland, Fla., Herbert Spencer of Birmingham, Ala. and Evelyn Spencer Lovell of Lakeland, Fla. Dr. Spencer was born in Jonesville, Va. and educated at Lincoln Memorial University and the Medical College of Virginia. He did his internship and residency in radiology in Washington, D.C. He served with the 8th Air Force during World War II and flew 35 combat missions over Germany in a B17. He practiced medicine in Richmond for 43 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and was active in a broad range of civic, religious and educational organizations. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Old Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethlehem Presbyterian Church or Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Tenn.

SUTTON
Mrs. Annie Mae Sutton of 501 Mansfield Dr. died September 30, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Alonza L. Sutton; four daughters, Mary M. Moore, Mae L. Taylor, Dollie R. Thomas and Dessie R. Long; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, one brother, one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law, two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by son, Clifton Sutton. Remains rest at the Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. After 10 a.m. Friday, remains will rest in St. John Baptist Church, 4317 North Ave., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Dr. Michael L. Felton officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

THOMPSON
Frances Turner Thompson, 86, of Richmond, widow of Matthew Christie Thompson, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001. Born June 9, 1915 and raised in Mebane, N.C., she was the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters. She attended Mary Baldwin College and was also a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in nursing. She entered the U.S. Army in 1942 as a lieutenant in the Women's Nurse Corp. She served in England during the German Blitz. After the war, she was released and became superintendent of nurses at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and later at Stuart Circle Hospital. She also served as superintendent of medicine at the Veterans Administration in Richmond. She is survived by many family members and friends who loved her so much and will miss her dearly. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westhampton Memorial Park with Rev. John Daniel officiating.

THORNTON
Jack E. Thornton Sr., Ph.D., 85, of Brandermill Woods, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and is survived by four children, Gail Thornton Stanley of Durham, N.C., Lyn Thornton Boozer of Batesburg, S.C., Robert E. Thornton of High Point, N.C. and Jack E. Thornton Jr. of Richmond; seven grandchildren, Trey and Chris Thornton, Ken Stanley and Carol Stanley Yombi, Kelly Boozer Arnold, Rebekah M. and Kimberly W. Boozer; three great-grandchildren, Adam and Caleb Stanley and Josiah Yombi; also a sister, Miriam T. Blair of Malvern, Pa. Dr. Thornton served as a Naval officer in WWII, and was a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill, where he received his B.S., Master's and Doctorate Degrees. He was a professor at the Citadel and retired as a Professor of Business Administration from VCU, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the American Red Cross for Disaster Relief.

WALKER
Virgil Lynn Walker, age 44, of Charlotte Court House, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001. Surviving are his wife, Patricia E. Walker of Richmond; one son, Larry W. Walker of Charlotte Court House; mother, Lula Vassar Walker of Charlotte Court House; two brothers, Richard Walker and Gary Walker; three sisters, Debora W. Spencer, Darlene W. Cooter and Charlene W. Butler. He was preceded in death by his father, William R. Walker; and a brother, Larry Waldon Walker. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Browning Funeral Home with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Contributions may be made to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad.

WHITEHURST
Mr. Maurice Edward "Billy" Whitehurst, 78, of Virginia Beach, passed away in his residence on October 3, 2001. Mr. Whitehurst was born in Henrico County, Va. and retired as a railway postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-la as an aviation metal Smith and was later employed at N.A.R.F. He was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Hazel W. Whitehurst; daughter, Priscilla Whitehurst Day and her husband, Douglas; granddaughters, Adrienne Kendrick and her husband, Capt. William Kendrick of California, and Jennifer Day Seiders and her husband, Jason; two great-grandsons, Teddy and Cameron; two brothers, Alton Whitehurst and Pete Whitehurst; and two sisters, Annie Marshall and Margaret Doswell. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. Rev. Warren Wilson will conduct a funeral service on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

YODER
Gideon I. Yoder of Amelia died peacefully at Mountain View Nursing Home on October 3, 2001. He was born on April 10, 1921 in Springs, Pa. and is the son of the late Ira and Susie (Brenneman) Yoder. Gideon is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Miller) Yoder; seven sons and two daughters, Allen Yoder and wife, Michelle of Canton, Ohio. Alvin Yoder and wife, Clara of Aroda, Lydia Yoder and husband, Ivan of Winfield, Pa., Freeman Yoder of Westminster, S.C., Jerry Yoder and wife, Mary of Dillwyn, Paul Yoder and wife, Marty of Culpeper, Raymond Yoder and wife, Brenda of Buckingham, Esther Clark and husband, Herb of Richmond, James Yoder of Amelia; 35 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by two daughters, Edna Yoder and Betty Myers. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Powhatan Mennonite Church. Interment church cemetery.
