John W. Roberts
RICHLANDS -- John Willard Roberts, 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at his home.
He was a native of Wise County, Va., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a retired coal miner from Pocahontas Fuel Company.
He was a member of the UMWA Local No. 6633 and a member of the Little Mill Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gilbert Roberts; two sons, the Rev. Mike Roberts and Danny L. Roberts, both of Richlands; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Beaudin, Mableton, Ga., and Freda Conley, Richlands; two brothers,James F. Roberts, Richlands, and Charlie Roberts, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Rosie Lee Bandy, Bluefield, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, Va., is in charge.

Bayless R. Shankel
Bayless Roscoe Shankel, 83, of 5482 Lady Bug Lane, Bristol, Va., died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, and was a farmer.
He was a member of Campground United Methodist Church and a member of the Tri-Cities Stroke Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Carroll Shankel; two daughters, Deloris Ann Godsey, Bristol, Virginia and Brenda Leigh Shankel, of the home; one sister, Mae Jones, Bristol, Tennessee; one brother, Glen Mack Shankel, Bristol, Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

George E. Sheppard
George Ernest "Shorty" Sheppard, 76, of 204 Eastside Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Jan, 27, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Washington County, Va., but had spent most of his life in the Bristol area.
He was an employee of Piggly Wiggly and Food City and had served as stock manager.
he was also a member of Volunteer Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Mollie Estelle Sheppard; one daughter, B. Elaine Campbell, Bristol, Tennessee; two brothers, Walter Sheppard, Marion, Va., and Clyde Sheppard, Roanoke; one grandson; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Kyle S. Boardwine
Kyle S. Boardwine, 83, of Bristol, Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Russell County and had lived in Washington County for the past 27 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a former employee of Castle Homes in Bristol.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline N. Boardwine; two sons, Jimmy Boardwine, Atlanta, Ga., and Sammy Boardwine, Cincinnati, Ohio; three daughters, Virginia Galloway, Norcross, Ga., Glenna Bacchus, Calhoun, Ga., and Lorrene Tullo, Cincinnati, Ohio; two stepsons, Preston Bussey, Bristol, Virginia, and Jimmy Bussey, Calhoun, Ga.; two sisters, Leah Mitchell and Anna Ruth Duty, both of Lebanon; 18 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Henry E. Combs
CLEVELAND, Va. -- Henry E. "Booger" Combs, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a member of Weaver's Creek Baptist Church.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Delphia Combs; two daughters, Mrs. LaVonda McMinn, Kingsport and Mrs. Beverly C. Smith, Cleveland; two sons, Henry F. "Butch" Combs, Cleveland, Gary Michael "Mike" Combs, Lebanon; three sisters, Mrs. Ann Musick, Bristol, Virginia, Mrs. Peggy Addley, Aiken, S.C., Mrs. Doris McGoldrick, Rutledge, Tenn.; one brother, Roger Combs, Cleveland; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Russell County Funeral Home is in charge.

Euell Gardner Sr.
BIG STONE GAP -- Euell Edward Gardner Sr., 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, in Wellmont-Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and was co-owner//operator of the Country Inn, Big Stone Gap, which was 1988 Gap Corporation "Business of the Year."
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Phillipines.
He was on the board of the Gap Corporation and was a charter member and president of the Lonesome Pine Auto Club.
He was past member of the Big Stone Gap Kiwanis Club and past member of Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge No. 208 AF&AM.
He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Big Stone Gap.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Holyfield Gardner; one daughter, Holli Lynn Mears, Big Stone Gap; one son, Euell Edward Gardner Jr., Warrenton, Va.; six grandchildren; one brother, Jack Gardner, Big Stone Gap; two sisters, Louise Hall, Kingsport, and Beulah Snodgrass, Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

Sophie N. Hale
STANLEY, Va. -- Sophie N. Hale, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at the home of her sister, Jeanette Mullins, in Stanley.
She was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Other survivors include three sisters, Minnie Dotson, Bristol, Virginia, Marie Mitchell, Stafford, Va., and Janice Longworth, Silver Springs, Md.; one brother, Robert Hale, Manassas, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, is in charge.

Howard B. Henninger
Howard Beverly Henninger, 78, of 1462 Georgia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Johnson City.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, Tennessee and a graduate of Bristol, Tennessee High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Sergeant in the First Battalion, 117th Infantry, 30th Division of the U.S. Army nicknamed "Old Hickory." This group received the presidential Unit Citation for action in the Omaha Beach landing of D-Day, the Rhineland Campaign, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes Campaign, the Central Europe Campaign, concluding with the capture of Magdeburg and joining with Russian forces on the Elbe River.
He was the retired assistant manager of the Country Club of Bristol, Tennessee where he was employed for 42 years.
He was a charter member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church of Bristol, Tennessee.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Vance Henninger; three daughters, Mrs. Sam (Jan) Allen, Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Larry (Betsy) Rogers and Mrs. Phil (Joan) Barbe, both of Bristol, Tennessee; one sister, Eileen Henninger Stewart, Bristol, Tennessee; one brother, Robert C. Henninger, Bristol, Tennessee; five granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Mavis Horne
NORTON -- Mavis Lucille Davidson Horne died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Norton, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Coeburn.
She retired from F.W. Woolworth, Norton, with 25 years of service.
She was a lifelong resident of Norton.
Survivors include two daughters, Imogene Emershaw Calhoun and Brenda Whitaker, both of Norton; two brothers, Ewing "Tag" Davidson, Norton, and Geoffrey Davidson, Salem, Va.; two sisters, Bess Gibson, Norton, and Jean Roberson, Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Douglas E. Hubbard
SWORDS CREEK -- Douglas Eugene Hubbard, 28, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in the Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of Richlands, Va., and resided in the Swords Creek area his entire lifetime.
He was a graduate of Honaker High School and a member of Bethel Chapel Church at Swords Creek.
He was a former employee of E. Dillon & Company, Swords Creek.
Survivors include his wife Sandra Hess Hubbard; one son, Channing Douglas Hubbard, of the home; his parents, Roger Lee and Sylvia Dye Hubbard, Swords Creek; one sister, Cathy Smith, Swords Creek; two brothers, Jackie Hubbard, Elk Garden, Va., and Roger Wayne Hubbard, New York; his maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Ida Hess, Swords Creek; and nine nieces and nephews.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge.
