Virginia Belle David

Virginia Belle David, 77, a former long-time resident of Bristol Tennessee, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Fort Smith, Ark.
She was born in Appalachia, Va., a daughter of the late Noah and Lisa Fuller. She moved to Bristol in 1947. After being employed with the Kingsport Press, King Printing Co. and Bristol Herald Courier, she received her bachelor's degree and master's degree in English from East Tennessee State University with post-graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She was an assistant professor of English at East Tennessee Sate University from 1965-84. She was a past president of the Bristol Chapter of Business and Professional Women's Organization, a member of the American Association of University Women and the national Council of Teachers of English. She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church and the widow of Hugh Walter David.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Dishner of Fort Smith and Ernest K. Dishner of Hummelstown, Pa.; three sisters, Betty Moore, Sue Fuller and Pauline Scraper, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in State Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Dearing will officiate.
Mrs. Davis, who was widely known for her expertise and knowledge of Appalachian folklore, was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Fuller. For many years, she developed international relationships as she hosted and tutored foreign students through ETSU.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Akard Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the National Alzheimer's Association.

G.W. Davidson

PINEY FLATS -- G.W. Davidson, 82, of 5253 Highway 11E, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was born in Piney Flats and was a member of Piney Flats Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sisters, Eliza Norris, Alice Parish and Estelee Rosenbalm, all of Gray, Tenn., and Margaret Hammons of Boones Creek, Tenn.; and a brother, Troy Lee Davidson of Gray.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gary Hodges will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Larry Barr. Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in George Mottern Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home.

Janice Marie Denton

Janice Marie "Jan" Denton, 24, of 303 Deck Valley Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a daughter of Brenda Booher of Bristol Virginia and Cecil Chapman of Bristol Tennessee. She was a housewife and a graduate of Tennessee High School. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving, besides her parents, are her husband, Shane Brian Denton; a son, Harley Brian Denton; her stepfather, Dolphis Booher of Bristol Virginia; a sister, Brenda "Michelle" Cross of the home; a brother, Christopher Cross of Bristol Tennessee; a niece; and a nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Paul Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in Rooty Branch Cemetery.
Mrs. Denton was preceded in death by grandparents, Walter and Irene Williams and William "Bill" and Bernice Chapman.
Among survivors are a niece, Taylor Herndon of the home; a nephew, Tyler Cross of Bristol Tennessee; four uncles, Bobby Cross, Richard Hatcher, Wayne Cross and Ray Cross; and several aunts and uncles on her father's side of the family.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Wright, Freddie Jackson, Jerry McKinney, Roger Jones, Greg Scott and Jason Widener.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home.

Norma G. Deskins

HONAKER -- Norma Gay Deskins, 83, of the Wysor Valley section, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in a Richlands hospital.
She was born in Honaker, a daughter of the late John and Martha Fletcher Richardson. She was a lifelong resident of Honaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Leonard Deskins.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Carey Lee (Ruthie) Hale of Honaker; three sons, Jerry Deskins of North Robinson, Ohio, Donald Deskins of Honaker and Leonard Richard Deskins Jr. of Bucyrus, Ohio; two brothers, Carl Richardson of Honaker and Fred Richardson of Findlay, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Arvil Arwood, Clyde Lambert and Lester Meadows will officiate. Burial will be in Richardson Cemetery in Honaker.
Mrs. Deskins was also preceded in death by two sons, John Perry "J.P." Deskins and Clifford Deskins; a sister, Martha "Dude" Harris; and three brothers, Brady Richardson, Donald Richardson and Paul Richardson.
Pallbearers will be Sam Deskins, Perry Deskins, Jim Gilpin, David Richardson, Jim Richardson, Billy Helton and Freddie Richardson. Honorary pallbearers will be Allan Fuller, Chris Williams and Dr. Faisal Chaudhry.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday in Honaker Funeral Home.

Helen H. Fields

ABINGDON -- Funeral services for Helen H. Fields will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Greendale Chapel by Farris Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Eggers will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
Mrs. Fields, 67, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Edmiston, Jason Fields, Frankie Fogleman, Teddy Rasnake, Allen Hay, Dean Fields and Scott Hay.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Charles F. Goodman Sr.

CHILHOWIE -- Charles Franklin Goodman Sr., 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He was born in Chilhowie, a son of the late Jenny Erps Goodman and John Goodman. He was employed with Chilhowie Milling Co. and Rouse Oil Service for more than 50 years before retiring in 1991. He served as president of the Chilhowie Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of Chilhowie Baptist Church for more than 25 years and was a member of Chilhowie Masonic Lodge 250 AF&AM.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Ruby Baker Goodman; a son, Charles Goodman of Marion, Va.; two grandsons, Jeffrey Christian Goodman of Knoxville and Adam Baker Goodman of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mr. Goodman's life will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Chilhowie United Methodist Church by Williams Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark McFadden and Chaplain Neville Mozingo will officiate. Entombment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Marion.
Mr. Goodman was also preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.
Among survivors are a daughter-in-law, Nancy Goodman of Marion; a special sister-in-law, Agnes Baker Jones; and two special nieces, Rose Marie Jones Dunn of Kingsport and Lynn Baker Senn of Chilhowie.
Pallbearers will be Chris Goodman, Baker Goodman, Bruce Baker, Earl Dunn, Bill Blevins, Rhett Sutherland and Porter Heath. Honorary pallbearers will be David Rouse, Jack Wheeler, Dan Tuell, Jimmy Walton, Dr. Wayne Reynolds and Hilton Rector.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in the church.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Memorial Fund of Chilhowie United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 367, Chilhowie, VA 24319.
Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ermel Lee Hall

CASTLEWOOD -- Ermel Lee Hall, 48, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center.
She was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late William Edward and Addie Mae Hurd Hall.
Surviving are a sister, Frances Mullins of Castlewood; four brothers, James Jimmy Hall, Kenneth Hall and Fletcher Hall, all of Castlewood, and Frank Hall of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Castlewood Funeral Home. The Revs. Bill Crawford and Ted Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Skeens Cemetery in Castlewood.
Mr. Hall was also preceded in death by four brothers, Claude, Howard, Eddie and Harold Hall.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Hall, Dave Skeens, Jimmy Hall Jr., Darrell Hall, Kenneth Brooks and Darrell Hurd.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Castlewood Funeral Home.

Herman Keith

CHILHOWIE -- Herman Keith, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He was a son of Maggie Dinsmore of Saltville, Va., and attended the Chilhowie First Church of God. He was retired from Northwestern Wire and Steel of Sterling, Ill.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Frances Marion VFW Post 4667.
Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Madeline Harris Keith; a sister, Mary Brown of Denison, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Chilhowie First Church of God by Newberry Funeral Home. Pastor Bobby Dunn will officiate. Services and entombment will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mount Rose Mausoleum in Glade Spring. Members of Frances Marion VFW Post 4667 will fold and present the flag.
Mr. Keith was preceded in death by a sister, Irene French; and a brother, B.F. Dinsmore.
Among survivors are special friends, Bill Bise, Rob Coe and Graham Church.
There will be no service functions in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Chilhowie First Church of God or Chilhowie Rescue Squad.
Newberry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary V. Leonard

Mary Virginia Leonard, 125 Wampler Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at her home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Weaver Funeral Home.

J. Peery Martin

DAMASCUS -- Funeral services for J. Peery Martin will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church by Johnson Funeral Home. Dr. Joe B. Brown and the Rev. Don Lasley will officiate. Special music will be by members of NarroWay Productions cast. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus.
Mr. Martin, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He was born in Asberry, Va., a son of the late Issac and Mae Mitchell Martin. He lived in the Damascus area for 52 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired road design engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a stage design and building and ground supervisor for NarroWay Productions, a professional Christian Theater Company in Fort Mill, S.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Damascus, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was also a former Sunday school director of the church.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian Manuel Martin; three daughters, Teresa Brown of Charlotte, N.C., Debbie Orr of Abingdon and Rebecca Martin of Fort Mill; a son, Phillip Martin of Meadowview; three sisters, Virgie Necessary of Meadowview, Betty Lezzer of Trenton, N.J., and Janie Martin of Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Among survivors are grandchildren Christa Brown Phipps, Hope Brown Phelps, Timothy Martin Brown, Stacey Orr Rabun and Erin Michelle Martin; great-granddaughter, Abigayle Grace Phipps; a special daughter-in-law, Lisa L. Martin; two special sons-in-law, Dr. Joe B. Brown and Allen McCann Orr; and a special friend, Robin "Birdie" Clark.
Pallbearers will be Timothy Martin Brown, the Rev. Matt J. Phipps, Stuart D. Phelps, Sollie W. Rabun, Joe B. Clark, Chris Manuel and Marty Manuel. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church, the ladies of Mary Jones Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, Don Peery Griffin, Dr. Dane Lee, Harry Tomlinson and Mr. Martin's Sunday school class at First Baptist church.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to NarroWay Productions, 2175 Gethsemane Court, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
