Orene D. Harris
FAIRFIELD -- Orene DanielsHarris, 94, formerly of Church Street, Fairfield, and more recently a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at the center.
She was a loyal and devoted member of the Fairfield Christian Church and considered her church family to be her family.
Surviving are a former son-in-law, Delbert Cuthrell, and his wife, Geraldine, of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Eric G. Cuthrell of Wilmington and Mark S. Barbee of Midlothian, Va.; two granddaughters, Rebecca A. Sutton of Virginia Beach and Nancy Atlee of Clifton, Va.; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Roe Lindsey Harris, a retired Christian Church minister, in 1974, and a daughter, Violet Faye Harris Cuthrell, in 1971.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Fairfield Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Cemetery. William W. Booth will officiate. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
Hattie W. Layden
BELVIDERE -- Hattie WilderLayden, 72, of Route 1, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford. The family will be at Miller Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today, and at other times at the home of her sister, Doris Spivey, 338 Gliden Road, Hobbsville.
Ted W. Martin
MILWAUKEE -- Ted Wilson Martin, 50, died Sept. 25, 1999. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in Bethany United Methodist Church. Bridgers Funeral Home is in charge.
John P. O'Neal
OCRACOKE -- John Puet O'Neal, 67, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 at his residence.
Mr. O'Neal, a native of Ocracoke, had retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a dredge boat captain. He also was a carrier for The Virginian-Pilot for 12 years on Ocracoke Island. He was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church, Fraternal Order of the Eagle No. 795 of Chesapeake and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Korean Conflict. He was the son of the late Calvin and Iva Spencer O'Neal and the husband of Edith Midgett O'Neal of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. O'Neal is survived by a son, Richard O'Neal of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister, Blanche Styron of Ocracoke; and a brother, Calvin O'Neal, also of Ocracoke.
Funeral services will be held at Ocracoke United Methodist Church -- time and date are pending at this time. The family will be at the home of Calvin O'Neal on Schoolhouse Road. Memorial donations may be made to Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, is handling arrangements.

GATESVILLE -- J.M. Rountree, 76, of Rountree Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999.

Ella A. Pound
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Ella Adams Pound was called home on Sept. 23, 1999, in Lakeland. Ella was born July 1, 1918, in Suffolk. She was a homemaker and caregiver for her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ella is survived by an extended family, including three daughters, Sara Melanie Tolley of the home, Jacqueline Davis and her husband, Thomas J. Davis, of Lakeland, and Barbara Starkey-Bass and her husband, Joseph L. Bass, of Suffolk; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Pound of Carthage, Mo.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, including Denise Starkey of Denver, Colo., Bennett Hill and his wife, Pam, and great-grandsons Garrett and Hayden, Kenny Hunt and wife Gina, Robbie Christian and wife Kelly, and great-granddaughter Jocelyn, Jimmy Hill and wife Yvonne, Kellye Burton and husband Thom, and great-grandson Alec, Sarah Blackford and husband Bryce, Sara Lassiter and husband Ron, and Blaine Tolley. Ella was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Pound Sr.; her son, William T. Pound Jr.; and her grandson, Kevin L. Hunt.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Lanier Funeral Home in Lakeland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to LifePath Hospice, 1037 South Florida Ave., Suite 106, Lakeland, FL 33803.
Reginald A. Bundy Jr.
CHESAPEAKE -- Reginald Allan Bundy Jr., 35, of the 900 block of King Arthur Drive, died Aug. 27, 1998.
Reginald is survived by his wife, Sharon Renee Bundy of Chesapeake; their children; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 6421 Providence Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23464, by the Rev. Larry L. Cherry, pastor. Burial with military honors will take place in Quantico National Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from noon until 8 p.m. in Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The body will be placed in the church at noon the day of the service.
Elsie C. Carnell
CHESAPEAKE -- Elsie Castle Carnell, 81, a resident of Chesapeake, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 1, 1998, at Chesapeake General Hospital.
Mrs. Carnell was a resident of Durham for most of her life. She was the widow of the late Hubert James Carnell.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Carnell-Poole of Chesapeake; a son, Larry G. Carnell of Durham; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Clements Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will also be at the home of her son, Larry G. Carnell of 5916 Nob Hill Road, Durham, N.C. 27704.

CHESAPEAKE -- David Harris, 86, of the 2900 block of Fireside Road, died Aug. 29, 1998.
Mr. Harris is survived by four nieces, Margaret Harris, Deborah Harris and Mary Corprew, all of Chesapeake, and Theresa Barrett of Norfolk; four nephews, Carlton Harris, Dwain Harris, Anthony Harris and Raymond Harris, all of Chesapeake; one sister-in-law, Janette Harris of Washington, D.C.; a cousin, Mable Harris of Norfolk; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

Van S. Richardson Sr.
CHESAPEAKE -- Van Sylvester ``Big Daddy" Richardson Sr., 84, of the 2500 block of Campostella Road, died Aug. 31, 1998, at his home.
Born in Nash County, N.C., he was a retired baker from Colonial Stores, Norfolk, after 38 years of service and an Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Providence United Church of Christ, Westmunden, Chesapeake, where he was a member of the deacon board and the senior choir and was a custodian. He was also a member of the Masonic Order Progressive Lodge No. 82.
Survivors include his wife, Malinda Coley Richardson; three daughters, Elaine R. Baker and Shirley R. Richardson of Chesapeake and Ernestine Bryant of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two sons, the Rev. Van S. Richardson Jr. of Dale City, Va., and Glenn D. Richardson Sr. of Bowie, Md.; one brother, Kelly Richardson of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Providence United Church of Christ, Westmunden, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Dr. Alexander Jamison. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is in charge.
Raymond Sawyer
CHESAPEAKE -- Raymond ``Skee" Sawyer, 85, died Sept. 1, 1998, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Sawyer was born in Columbia, N.C., and was the son of the late Oscar and Casoler Sawyer. He was the widower of Eula Sawyer and also predeceased by a sister, Mary Jamison and his brothers, Oscar Sawyer and Sylvester Sawyer.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by his sister, Mildred Cartwright of Chesapeake.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.
Mack M. Johnson
NORFOLK -- Mack McKinley Johnson, 85, of the 2800 block of Hollister Ave., died Aug. 27, 1998.
A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was a retired automotive mechanic from the Norfolk Naval Base and a co-owner of
Johnson and
Johnson Bus Service. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk; the Male Usher Board; Willing Worker Club; Pastor Aide Club; former member of New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk; Jem Social Saving Club; Alpha and Omega Consistory No. 9; 33rd Degree; Wheaton Chapter No. 73; OES-PHA Progressive Lodge No. 80 Prince Hall (more than 50 years); and Arabia Temple No. 12 PHA.
Survivors include one sister, Josephine ``Lois" Corum of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Margaretta Archer, Michael L. Johnson, both of Norfolk; three great-grandchildren, Belinda Briscoe of Norfolk, Sherell Briscoe of Norfolk and Antonio Simmons of Virginia Beach; one great-great-granddaughter, Chelcee Hundley of Norfolk; two aunts, Mary Patillo and Sally Patillo, both of Warrenton; one uncle, John T. Bess P. Kile
NORFOLK -- Bess P. Kile, 91, a former resident of Norfolk, died Aug. 27, 1998.
She was the owner of Jessie Beauty Salon. Mrs. Kile had retired in Groveland, Fla.

Robert E. Stackhouse
NORFOLK -- Robert E. Stackhouse, 83, born Nov. 17, 1914, in Marion, S.C., passed away Aug. 30, 1998, at the home of his daughter, 3124 Somme Ave., Norfolk. He was the widower of Flossie M. Stackhouse.
He leaves to mourn his daughter, Margaret Stackhouse Brehon of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Veronica R. Brehon, Deborah B.
Johnson of Norfolk and Andre P. Brehon of Portsmouth; five great-grandchildren, Cardin D. Springs, Simone N. Brehon and Jamal R. Springs of Norfolk and Andrea Coles and Turkessa P. Wilcox of Portsmouth; three sisters, two brothers; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
Mr. Stackhouse was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church. He was a retired merchant seaman after 45 years of service. He also was a member of Eastern Light Lodge No. 4 Prince Hall affiliate.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the Homestead, 2934 Corprew Ave. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association.
