DIANA HORTON

Diana Nelms Horton, 93, died August 26, 2007, in Sentara Nursing Center, Chesapeake, VA.

She was born April 5, 1914, in Suffolk, VA, the daughter of the late S. Clyde and Matilda D. Nelms. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Thomas Horton and son, Thomas Clyde Horton.

Mrs. Horton was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Church’s Saints Alive Group. She retired form Obici Memorial Hospital, Medical Records Department.

Survivors include her sons, Charles N. Horton and wife, Sherrill of Chesapeake; Aubrey J. Horton and wife, Kathleen of Hurst, TX; grandchildren, Troy Langston of Ft Worth, TX, Lora Wylie of Haltom City, TX, Amy Horton of Hurst, TX; and Jonathan Horton of Liberty, KY; sister, Margaret Edmondson of Clemson, SC; special niece, Betty Bauer of Clemson, SC; special nephew, Randy West of Suffolk.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care given by Sentara Nursing Center Staff.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Michael D. Halley, followed by a reception and visitation in the church fellowship hall. Although Mrs. Horton requested that she be cremated, flowers are welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Christian Church, P. O. Box 1457, Suffolk, VA, 23439. R. W. Baker & Co.

N. WAYNE MATTHEWS

Norman Wayne Matthews, Sr., 62, died September 2, 2007, at Sentara Obici Hospital.

A Virginia native, he was the son of the late Norman and Lorraine S. Matthews. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Wayne Matthews and his half sister, Becky Gilreath. Mr. Matthews was employed by Dominion Virginia Power as a turbine mechanic. He was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, the National Rifle Association and Suffolk Masonic Lodge #30.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Matthews; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Dawn and David Shetterly of Gloucester, VA; sons and daughter-in-law, Marshall A. and Shanna Matthews of Gates County, NC, Norman Wayne Matthews, II of Williamsburg, VA; stepson, Daniel Johnson of Windsor, VA; eleven grandchildren; sister, Sandra M. Wyatt of Surry, VA; half brother Mitchell Matthews of California; step-sister, Victoria Rudisail of Marietta, GA; uncle and aunt, Nick and Margaret Sarick of Suffolk.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Rev. Allen Lancaster with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA, 23439 or to Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery Fund, 4213 Whaleyville Blvd, Suffolk, VA, 23434.

Wallace Garnett

Wallace B. Garnett died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Lake Prince Woods in the company of his family.

Mr. Garnett was born in Dunnsville, VA on July 28, 1913. The son of Professor William Care Garnett and Lena Hodge Wossman, he was one of seven children.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Norfleet Garnett, his brothers Julian and Muscoe Garnett of Suffolk, and other siblings.

He served in the CMTC Calvary at the age of 17 for several years.

Mr. Garnett was a World War II veteran serving as a Marine Master Sergeant at Guadalcanal.

He turned down a commission and returned home at the end of the war to raise a family in Suffolk, his wife’s home town.

He owned and operated a number of businesses in Suffolk and the surrounding counties, most notably Garnett Oil Company with his brothers Muscoe and Julian Garnett.

Mr. Garnett was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church, serving on its Board in past years, and was a member of the McLemore Men’s Sunday School Class throughout his life.

He was a 32 degree Mason, a member of Nansemond Masonic Lodge 77, the Suffolk Shrine Club, and the Suffolk Elks Lodge BPOE 685.

He is survived by his children and their spouses daughter Martha and husband Holt Westbrook of Lookout Mountain, GA, sons Lewis and wife Ruby Garnett, and Fleet and wife Brenda Garnett, all of Suffolk; grandchildren Holt Westbrook, Garnett Westbrook of Atlanta, GA, Lewis Garnett, IV, Shawn and wife Sarah Garnett of Suffolk; step-grandson Wesley and wife Rene Rawles of Suffolk; many nieces and nephews including Virginia Carrington of Suffolk and Hannah and husband Leon Hall of Long Beach, NC; great nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law Mrs. Dorothy Garnett of Irvington, VA. A Funeral will be conducted Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 11 AM in the R. W. Baker & Co Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk, by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, June 18, 2007 from 7 to 8 p.m. at funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Main Street Methodist Church Building Fund, 202 Main St. Suffolk, VA 23434 or to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk VA 23439.

H. Paul Funkhouser

Howard Paul Funkhouser, 82, of Cherokee Drive, Suffolk, VA, went to his Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 20, 2007, after an extended illness.

Born in New Brighton, PA, he was the son of the late Howard Clifton and Jennie Mae Funkhouser, and proceeded in death by his six sisters and his parents.

Mr. Funkhouser was a former member of the New Brighton Free Methodist Church of New Brighton, PA and a current member of Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church of Suffolk, VA.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Germany, and was retired from Babcock and Wilcox Tubular Products of Beaver Falls, PA in 1986 after 33 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Lorraine (Denbow) Funkhouser; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) French of Suffolk; son, Paul Dwight Funkhouser, Sr., of West Jefferson, NC and their spouses; five grandchildren, Paul D. Funkhouser, Jr. and Heather L. Funkhouser of Belmont, NC, Lorralyn G. Horne and Brandon L. French of Suffolk, W. Aaron French of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, James Garrett Funkhouser and Ethan Connor French; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Edna) Goettman and Mrs. Joseph (Martha) Russell of New Brighton, PA. A funeral service will be held Saturday June 23 at 11 AM at the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Dan Kerley. Burial will be held Monday June 25 at 11 AM at the Albert G. Horton Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Deacon’s Fund of the Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434; or the memorial fund of the New Brighton Free Methodist Church, 925 11th St New Brighton, PA 15066.

FLOYD F. BENNETT

Floyd Franklin Bennett, 80, died March 19, 2008, in Norfolk.

Born in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Dock Huston and Glenna Jane N. Bennett. Mr. Bennett was former co-owner and pharmacist of Joseph P. Hall Drugstore. He was a member or Rainelle United Methodist Church in Rainelle, WV. During the WW II, he served in the U. S. Army.

Survivors include his niece, Barbara Gibb; nephew, Charles Bennett, both of Colorado; two great nieces and three great nephews.

A Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, March 22, 2008 at the End of the Trail Cemetery in Clintonville, WV. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, in Suffolk and Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Rainelle, WV, are serving the family. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

EMMA SARAH CUMMINGS

Emma Adelia “Sarah” Baughman Cummings, 82, wife of Harry L. Cummings, died on March 23, 2008 in Suffolk VA. She was born in Sandston, VA, to the late Mary Reid and Nelson Greer Baughman. She was predeceased in death by brothers Nelson Greer Jr. and Emilius Allen.

Sarah and Harry were married shortly after she graduated from Highland Springs High School. This marriage lasted more than 65 years. During WWII while Harry was away in the military, Sarah worked in the Post Office in Sandston, did volunteer work for the Red Cross, and was a “plane spotter” at the Richmond Army Air Base. Thereafter, Sarah was a homemaker and accompanied Harry in his FBI career in the Denver, Detroit, Washington, and finally at the Norfolk FBI offices. She made many friends in each of these cities. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Prior to moving to the Lake Prince Retirement Center in Suffolk, VA in 2002, she and Harry lived at Bay Island in Virginia Beach, VA for more than 37 years. There she enjoyed her many flowers and walking. She was a charter member of the Island Circle of the Kings Daughters and was very active for many years. She also did volunteer work for the Red Cross. She was a member of the Bayside Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, VA.

Sarah is survived by her husband Harry Lee Cummings; daughter Sarah Lee and husband John W. (Jack) McLaughlin of Falls Church, VA; son Harry Reid Cummings and wife Joyce Marie of Woodbridge, VA. Grandchildren SandiLee Mathers of Costa Mesa, CA; Gregory Carroll and wife Robin Mathers of Pleasanton, CA, Kimberly Marie Cummings of Woodbridge, VA; and Susan Ellen Monaghan of Pleasanton, CA; Great grandchildren Lila Kate Mathers, Connor John Monaghan, Alexandra May Monaghan, and Tiana Violet Monaghan. She was a loving grandmother who was dearly loved by her grandchildren, who will always remember her singing fun little songs to them and baking cookies together at Christmas.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 11 AM in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington, Suffolk VA 23434 by Rev. Richard Keever and Rev. Mary Henderson, with a reception immediately following the funeral service at Lake Prince. Burial will be Thursday at 11 AM in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, VA. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233 Norfolk, VA 23502-4006.
