HALTERMAN
Douglas L. Halterman, 72, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Frankie Lee Halterman; two sons, Douglas L. Halterman and Scott W. Halterman; one daughter, Rita L. Downey; one stepson, Joseph B. Smith; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson; two brothers, Lloyd Halterman and Frank Halterman; one sister, Rose Burker. Mr. Halterman served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a retired welder and was a member of Village Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Village Presbyterian Church, 110 N. Laburnum Ave. Interment private. Nelsen Funeral Home handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

HARRIS
Departed this life August 22, 2001, Mr. George M. Harris Sr. of 1617 Gunn St. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

HERRING
Fred J. Herring of Richmond departed this life Monday, August 20, 2001. He is survived by his sons, Fred Jr. and Kevin Herring; two daughters, Michelle DeVore and Tonya Herring; five grandchildren, stepgranddaughter; three brothers, James, Willie and Robert Herring; three sisters, Emma McCargo, Cora Winn and Mary Herring; several nieces and nephews, one son-in-law, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where funeral services will be held Friday, August 24, 11 a.m. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

HOLLOWAY
V. Scott Holloway, 49, of 211 Colonial Court, Forest, Va., died Monday, August 20, 2001 at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond. He was born December 6, 1951 in Portsmouth, Va., a son of Daniel B. Holloway of Stuarts Draft, and the late Helena Baldwin Holloway. He was a warehouse manager for Industrial Products Co., Lynchburg. In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Deborah Petrie Holloway of Forest; one daughter, Elizabeth Bennett Holloway of Richmond; one son, Wesley Daniel Holloway of Forest; his stepmother, Thelma Holloway of Stuarts Draft; one sister, Kay Hartman of Fishersville; three brothers, Richard Holloway of Staunton, Steve Holloway of Richmond, and Glenn Holloway of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft, by Rev. Floyd Wingfield and Father James Kauffman. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Richard Balser, Sylvain Christophe, Billy Crouch, Henry Fitzgerald, Jim Jedelsky, Hayes Smith, Steve Sorrells and Jim Woodside. Honorary pallbearers will be former and present co-workers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Memorial donations may be made to the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Ave., Springfield, N.J. 07081.

JONES
Mr. Alamance Jones Sr., 72, of Skippers, died Wednesday, August 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Gordon Jones; one son, Alamance "Buck" Jones Jr. and wife, Connie of Emporia; three daughters, Rubette Lane "Betty" Jones of Emporia, June J. Luczynski and husband, Mike of Hopewell and Chery J. Allen and husband, Brian of Emporia; four grandchildren, Michelle S. Jones, Faye D. Waller, Sheree Dawn Mitchell, Ashley Nicole Allen; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan C. Jones, Haley M. Jones and Jayshon Waller; two brothers, Herbert Jones of Fayetteville, N.C. and Raleigh R. Jones of Emporia. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by three brothers, Weldon Jones, Horace Jones and Ernie Jones. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2001 at Forest Hill Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad.

MAGEE
Janet B. Magee, age 53, of Richmond, died Thursday, August 16, 2001. She is survived by two sons, Mike and Chris Magee of Richmond; and one granddaughter. Services will be private.

MARTIN
Ola Murray Martin, a native of Beaverdam, Va., died August 21, 2001 at the Hermitage Methodist Home, Richmond, Va. Mrs. Martin, a former commercial education teacher in the Hanover County Public Schools, the Richmond Public Schools and the Charles County, Md. Public Schools, was a graduate of Mary Washington College. Born August 14, 1910, she was the widow of the late Dr. Thomas Carlyle Martin, who was the superintendent of the Charles County, Md. Schools, and the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Alexandria Eston Murray of Beaverdam. Mrs. Martin was the founder of the Future Business Leaders of America Chapter at Henry Clay High School in Ashland, Va. and a member of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, where she served as secretary of the Scotchtown Committee. Mrs. Martin was an active member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church. Surviving are Susan Weems-Leachman of Ashland, Va., John Williamson Talley of Atlanta, Ga., Beatrice Talley Weems Leachman Cope, Thomas Keith Leachman Jr., Alice McGehee Talley, Margaret Venable Talley Mepham, Elizabeth Taliaferro Talley Wagner, Virginia Walker Talley, Mary Elizabeth Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Adams of Sykesville, Md. and Elizabeth Blunt Staton. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Hermitage Methodist Home, 1600 Westwood Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23227 or the Beaverdam United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 67, Beaverdam, Va. 23015.

MAURY
Sandra Marie Butler Maury, devoted mother, died suddenly Monday, August 20, 2001. Survived by her husband, Bill; five children, Amy Vail and her husband, Gabriel, Christopher Newcomb, Vincent Newcomb, Scott Newcomb and his wife, Melissa, William Jr.; eight grandchildren, two brothers, and three sisters. The family will receive friends 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, August 23, 2001, in the parish hall of the Church of the Incarnation, Mineral. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2001, at the Church of the Incarnation, with the Rev. Ann Manson officiating. Interment in Spring Grove Memorial Park, Mineral. Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa, in charge of arrangements.

McCANDLISH
Josephine Meredith Sutton McCandlish, age 85, of 300 Westminister Canterbury Drive, Winchester, died August 21, 2001 at her residence. She is survived by a daughter, Rebekah Burckmyer; and a brother, Frank Taylor Sutton III. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, August 24 at Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester. Interment will be in Fairfax Cemetery and will be private. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 114 W. Boscawen Street, Winchester, Va. 22601.

Mr. Edward E. Mills, retired letter carrier, departed this life August 19, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Gwendolyn Taylor Mills; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene M. and Charles N. Jackson II; grandchildren, Renata Y. Jackson, Andrea C. Jackson and Charles N. Jackson III; great-grandchild, Edward Arthur Beale; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Estelle Lewis and Mrs. Anita Mills; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home where his family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Friday. After 11 a.m. Saturday, his remains will rest at First United Presbyterian Church, 3401 North Ave. where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Rev. Willie Woodson officiating. Gilroy Ed (Bubba) Phaup Sr., age 74, of Deltaville, Va., formerly of Sandston, died August 18, 2001. He is survived by four sons, Steven D. of Las Vegas, Nev., D. Wayne of New Kent, Gilroy (Roy) E. of Richmond, and Mark T. Phaup of Charles City; one sister, Marion Turner of Newport News. Mr. Phaup was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Sandston VFW Post 8529. Mrs. Pauline Presson Phillips, age 84, of Seaford, Va., formerly of Richmond, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001. The wife of the late Henry Jefferson Phillips Jr, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Henry Jr. and Karen Phillips of Sandston and Terry Presson and Beth Phillips of Florida; one brother and sister-in-law, Brooks W. and Pearl Presson of Seaford; three grandchildren, Terri Marie and David Fox of Quinton, Angie Pauline and Kip Jordan of Chesterfield, Sony and Leah Phillips of Mechanicsville; five great-grandchildren, Chris Rowsey, Renee Fox, Brittany Jordan, Lauren and Haley Phillips. The family will receive friends Thursday night at K.L. Jordan Funeral Services, 5008 Nine Mile Road from 7 to 9 p.m. Her remains will be forwarded to Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday night. Joan Whiteman Scott, age 59, of Chesterfield, died Monday, August 20, 2001. She is survived by her husband, John William Scott; two daughters, Sharon Leslie Scott and Tracy Lynn Scott; her mother, Olive Jesse. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9400 Redbridge Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society and Hospice of Central Virginia. SHOMO
Richard C. Shomo, Ph.D., 50, of Richmond, Va., died August 21, 2001 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Shomo received his BSN and MSN degrees from Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy and his Ph.D. in Public Administration from Century University. Dr. Shomo's career in health care spanned nearly 30 years, including 12 years as President and CEO of Central Virginia Ambulance Service. In 1992, under the auspices of Hamad Medical Corporation, he designed and implemented countrywide emergency medical services for the emirate of Qatar. From 1997-1999, Dr. Shomo served as Executive Director of Rescue Inc. in Brattleboro, Vt. Throughout his career, Dr. Shomo served as regional or adjunct faculty to the American Heart Assn., the Medical College of Virginia, Hampton University and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. At the time of his death, Dr. Shomo was writing a book on the health care system and providing on-line EMS management consultation through the EMS House of DeFrance website. Dr. Shomo was a past or current member of the VA Ambulance Assn., the Medical College of VA Trauma Care Committee and Paramedic Advisory Board, the VA Governor's Advisory Board on Emergency Medical Services, and the National Assn. of EMS Physicians. He was also a Life Member of West End Vol. Rescue Squad. Dr. Shomo is survived by his wife, Jan Shomo of Richmond; his brother, Thomas Shomo of Hampton-Sydney, Va.; his sister, Elizabeth Brunnemer of Charlotte, N.C.; his first wife, Cary Shomo of Richmond; his daughter, Catherine Ewart of Richmond; his son, Thomas Shomo of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Shomo's memory may be made to West End Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11144, Richmond, Va. 23230.

TAYLOR
Aileen Traylor Taylor, of Westminster-Canterbury, Richmond, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001. She was the widow of Riley G. Taylor and the daughter of the late Carrie Tutwiler and Wilbur Traylor. Mrs. Taylor graduated from the old John Marshall High School and was awarded a silver trophy for the highest scholastic grades in the class. She attended classes at Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, and Columbia University. Mrs. Taylor was very talented in music, writing and art. Her first employment was with the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. She left there to become the head of Wedding Services at Miller & Rhoads. Her last position was Assistant to the Minister at Reveille United Methodist Church, leaving there after her marriage. She leaves no immediate survivors but many devoted friends. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Garth at Reveille United Methodist Church.
