A neighbor who was involved with Boy Scouts took him under his wing and focused him on becoming an Eagle Scout.
At age 14, he became the youngest Scout in Massachusetts to attain the rank of Eagle at the time.

He ran the insurance business concurrently with Management Futures. In 1953, he became a chartered life underwriter. He was a founder and member of the American Chartered Life Underwriters Association.

He had served as a director of First Virginia Bank, Richmond Barrel and Box Co. and Covington Travel. He was founder and a director of Management Futures.
