Grace Mercer Ginn, 65, community volunteer, dies
Nov 07, 2002
Grace Mercer Ginn devoted her energy to community causes, and she got results.
She was a former Fan Free Clinic board president and later headed the $1.6 million capital campaign that enabled the agency to acquire a new building on Thompson Street. Through those efforts, the clinic was able to add and expand services for thousands of additional clients, said the clinic's executive director, Jim Beckner.
"Everyone here called her 'Mama Grace' because of the way she interacted with other board members, staff, volunteers and clients," Beckner said. "She was amazing in what she was able to do and that was her other nickname 'Amazing Grace'."
Diagnosed about a year ago with amytrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, Mrs. Ginn died Monday. She was 65.
A longtime supporter of the United Way of Greater Richmond, she was the organization's liaison to the Fan Free Clinic from 1988 to 1990, when she joined the clinic's board.
She was president of the Junior League of Richmond in 1975, when the League celebrated its 50th anniversary and acquired the Mayo Carter House, which serves as its headquarters.
"I know she was particularly proud of the work she did with the Fan Free Clinic," said her son, Marshall Holmes Ginn, of Arlington. "And she just loved the League. It was through the League that she really learned how to serve the community."
She served as chairwoman for fund-raising balls for the Historic Richmond Foundation and what is now Children's Hospital.
A member of The Council of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, she recently was co-chairperson of "Night Nouveau," an event recognizing the museum's current art nouveau exhibition.
She was member of the board of Stop Child Abuse Now, the board of Family Lifeline and the alumni board of Collegiate School.
A Richmond native, she earned a bachelor's degree in 1959 from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and later took courses at the University of Southern California in education of the deaf.
For about seven years in the 1960s she worked at the Medical College of Virginia, teaching deaf children to lip-read and to speak.
The Junior League of Richmond honored her in 2002 with its Barbara Ransome Andrews Award for outstanding commitment to the community.
In addition to her son, survivors include her husband, George Holmes Ginn; two other sons, George Warren Ginn, of Glen Cove, N.Y., and Gregory Blane Withers, of Roxbury, Conn.; a daughter, Mary Catharine Kolbert, of Richmond; and one granddaughter.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.

Dr. Robert Steele Hutcheson Jr.
Feb 03, 2003
Dr. Robert Steele Hutcheson Jr. was a doctor who knew more about his patients than their allergies and ailments.
The Roanoke physician and former president of the Virginia Department of Health took the time to remember the details of his patients' lives.
"He was one those doctors who always found something interesting in the people he treated," said his daughter, Mary Moffett H. Priddy.
Dr. Hutcheson, who practiced in Roanoke for 35 years before retiring in 1985, died Sunday. He was 83.

Dr. Hutcheson was appointed to the state board of health in the 1960s and became its president in 1967. He served on the board until 1976.
Henry Page Mauck, a cousin, said Hutcheson was a family man, balancing his practice with his duties as the father of six.
"He was recognized by people, generally, as just a fine person," Mauck said.
Dr. Hutcheson was also well-known in the church community. He was a former trustee at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, where he was named father of the year for religious activities in 1959.
After he retired, he served as a consultant to the Social Security Office of Hearings and Appeals for a decade and volunteered his time with church and community service organizations.

Garrard, of Taylorsville, N.C., Mary Moffett H. Priddy, of Richmond, Elizabeth H. Marth, of Richmond, and Alice H. Brafford, of Charlotte, N.C.; and 16 grandchildren.
