Mabel O. Cleveland, 90, wife of the late Rev. Curtis P. Cleveland, died July 9, 2001. She is survived by her children, C. Peyton Cleveland and his wife, Ann of Texas, Gloria Newton of North Carolina, Rev. Grover A. Cleveland and his wife, Sandra of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Kelly Hemphill of Texas, Laura Cleveland of Chester, and Philip Cleveland of Cumberland. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond.

Duane McMillion Cook, age 39, of Richmond, died on July 11, 2001. He is survived by his son, Brandon; companion, Linda Yancy; mother, Faye McMillion Cook of Amelia; father, Thomas P. Cook of Midlothian; sister, Cindy Johnson of Glen Allen; brother, Thomas P. Cook Jr. of Amelia; grandmother, Elaine Mitchell McMillion of Amelia; and was predeceased by his grandfather, Bernard McMillion; survived by nephews, Ryland and Ridge Johnson of Glen Allen and Tommy Cook of Amelia; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Graveside services Saturday 11 a.m. at Little Flock Cemetery. Visiting at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. CREWS
William Alexander Crews, 82, of 5100 Hog Wallow Road, Nathalie, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ethel B. Epperson Crews. Mr. Crews was born in Pittsylvania County, August 22, 1918, son of the late Jessie Jackson Crews and the late Gracie Short Crews. He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church, an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Brookneal Odd Fellows Lodge, American Legion Post 8, Travelers Protection Association. He was a retired owner of Epperson and Crews Auto Supply. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, John William (Bill) Crews of Jetersville; one daughter, Morgan Alexander of Farmville; five grandchildren, John W. Crews Jr. of Jetersville, J. Allison Crews of Farmville, Charles Henry Morse of Richmond, Matthew Turner of Washington, D.C., Stan Crews of Greensboro, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, four brothers, Verp Crews, Richard Crews, Roy Crews, all of Hurt, Edison Crews of Gretna; one sister, Katherine C. Robey of Lynchburg. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda C. Newcomb; father and mother-in-law, John F. and Ethel Epperson; three brothers, two sisters. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Childrey Baptist Church. Henderson Funeral Home, Brookneal is in charge of arrangements.

CRUMP
Mr. Ernest A. Crump, 90, retired farmer of Red Oak, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001. He was predeceased by his wife, Elma Dalton Crump and is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Rebecca C. and Wilmer B. White of Chase City, Deborah C. Woodson of Farmville; a son and daughter-in-law, G. Wayne and Rebecca W. Crump of Red Oak; three grandsons, one great-granddaughter, two stepgreat-grandchildren and five brothers. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, at Bethel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church. Newcomb Allgood Davis Funeral Home, Chase City, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph L. Faber, age 74, of Richmond, died Thursday, July 12, 2001. Widower of Virginia E. Faber. Survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Ruth Southard; two grandchildren, Melaine and Robby Southard; one great-grandson, Tyler, all of Richmond. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will recieve friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday Interment Washington Memorial Park.

Mattie L. Hale of 816 Westover Hills Boulevard died July 12, 2001. Remains rest at Scotts Funeral Home, 115 Brookland Park Blvd., Richmond, VA. Funeral notice later.

HENLEY
Louise Lowry Henley, 83, of Montpelier, died July 12, 2001. She was the widow of William Henley. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Henley Harris; her nephew, Harvey Henley Jr.; three grandchildren, Debra Dunaway of Louisa, Dennis Harris of Bumpass, and Tammy Fowler; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Webb, Stephanie Chenault and Bryan Matthew Harris; two great-great-grandchildren, Bailey and Brylee Webb. The family will receive friend 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chapel Church of Christ.

HOUSTON
Bernard Graycelon Houston Sr., 86, of 11711 Three Chopt Road, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 10, 2001. He was preceded in death by two sons, Garnell G. and Theodore A. Houston; one grandson, Bernard G. Houston III; and one great-gradnson, Mykell T. Fisher. Cherishing his precious memories are his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Margaret R. Houston; his devoted children: a daughter, Gertie Houston Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md.; son, Bernard Graycelon Houston Jr.; six grandchildren, Felicia Johnson, Marc, Kevin and Erika Houston, Eric Fisher; step-grandson, Augustus Williams Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jordan Johnson, Derek Houston; two devoted daughters-in-law, Audrey and DeLora Houston; one loving son-in-law, Augustus Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two brothers-in-law, James Thomas and devoted James H. Harris Sr.; three sisters-in-law, Natalie, Mary and Lella Harris; a host of loving nieces and nephews, one devoted, Donald T. Houston; other relatives and friends. Mr. Houston was a faithful member of Springfield Baptist Church for over 75 years. His remains rest at Scotts Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. After 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, his remains will rest in Abner Baptist Church, 15143 Abner Church Rd., Glen Allen, Va. where funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Rev. Clifford B. Chambliss Jr., Pastor-Elect of Garland Ave. Baptist Church, officiating. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family will have fellowship at Abner Baptist Church after the services.

HOYLE
Ivey Lester Hoyle Sr., Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at a local hospital. He was 93. Mr. Hoyle was born in Cleveland County, N.C. August 25, 1907. He lived most of his childhood in Mecklenburg County, Va., and Victoria, Va. and his adult life in Richmond, Va. He was married to Vivian Herndon and after her death he married Elizabeth Hudson Dunnavant, who also preceded him in death. Mr. Hoyle retired from the Richmond Newspapers after 38 years and then worked for Pleasant's Hardware for 18 years. He was a member of Branch's Baptist Church and was formerly a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was a Mason for over 55 years and was a member of Northside Lode No. 292 A.F.&A.M. where he was Master in 1955. He is survived by his son, Lester Hoyle Jr. and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Gratz Hoyle of White Stone and Richmond, Va., formerly of Round Hill, Va.; one daughter, Frances Hoyle Jackson and son-in-law, Wayne Jackson of Tappahannock, Va., formerly of Richmond, Charlotte, N.C. and Longwood, Fla.; one grandson, Timothy Wayne Jackson of Tappahannock, Va.; five granddaughters, Sharon Hoyle Moore of Dayton, Va., Tracy Hoyle Yamamoto of Columbia, Md., Cindy Hoyle Solomon of Murray, Utah, Kelly Jackson Schnabbel of Larchmont, N.Y., Dianne Jackosn Mansfield of Oakboro, N.C.; nine great-grandchildren; one niece, Wilma Mann Bright of Huntingtown, Md.; one nephew, Charles Townsend Jr., Fairfax Station, Va. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and where services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Virgina Voice (a radio reading service for the visually impared), P.O. HUBBARD
Edward Wade Hubbard Jr., 77, of Ashland, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at his residence. The son of the late, E.W. Hubbard Sr. and Lucille Johnson Hubbard, he was born in Cuckoo and raised in Mineral until age 16 when he joined the armed services. He served in the 82nd Airborne during World War II in the European Theatre as a paratrooper. Mr. Hubbard lived in the Ashland area for 20 years and was the owner and CEO of Richmond Refrigeration since 1982. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Diana B. Hubbard; and his children, E.W. "Chip" Hubbard III of Mechanicsville, John D. Lollar of Caroline County, Michael L. Lollar of Frederick, Md. and Stephanie D. Lollar of Ashland; his grandchildren are Justin Hubbard and Sophia Lollar. He was predeceased by his brothers, Roger R. Hubbard and Cary Lee Hubbard; and his sisters, Alice Hollins and Grace Hubbard. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, Ashland with burial immediately following in Westhampton Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be made to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Caroline County, First Baptist Church, Ashland or Kenwood United Methodist Church in Elmont.

HUGHES
Freddie Joe Hughes, 74, of Richmond, died Sunday, July 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn E. Hughes; daughter, Debra A. Copley of Plano, Texas; son, Mark A. Hughes of Manassas; grandchildren, Jonathan and Jennifer Hughes, Paul and Jack Copley; two brothers, Owen and Carroll Hughes; a sister, Wanda Gayle Truesdell, all of Texas. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Gertrude Hughes; and a brother, Johnnie D. Hughes. He was a member of FRA No. 219 and was retired from the U.S. Navy and the Department of State. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment 1 p.m. Tuesday in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Departed this life July 8, 2001, Mrs. Mabel Jackson of Doswell, Va. She is survived by "five grandchildren", Raymond Mickens, Kenneth Carter, Marie Burgess, Kevin and Brian Moore; many other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Mrs. Martha M. Jewett of Richmond, widow of Bryce D. Jewett Sr., died Thursday, July 12, 2001. She is survived by her two sons, Bryce D. Jewett Jr. and his wife, Gay and George A. "Pete" Jewett, both of Richmond; her daughter, Lynne Jewett Sixta and her husband, John of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Maury Cemetery. LAMPKIN
Burnette Cheek Lampkin, 82, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Varina, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert J. Lampkin Sr.; four children, Carole Seay, Patsy Dent and her husband, Tom, Barbara Burkett, Robert J. Lampkin Jr. and his wife, Lelia, all of Mechanicsville; eight grandchildren, Gil and Richie Seay, Stephanie Ward, Stephen Sharp, Lisa Morris, Robert Glass, Staci and Tiffany Lampkin; eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lampkin was a seamstress for all of her life. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday 5 to 8:30 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14. Interment Four Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Departed this life June 29, 2001, Mr. James Garland Lett Jr. of 811 Spottswood Rd. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. James Garland Lett Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Frederick Andrews; one stepson, Frizelle Barbour; and one daughter, Lakiesha Lett; four grandchildren; devoted mother, Mrs. Sally Lett Booker; three sisters, Glenda and Debbie Lett and Julia Billie; four brothers, Gary, LaNarde, and Gerrard Lett and James Jackson; one godbrother, Ronald Spencer; six aunts; devoted mother, Janet Holliday; a host of nephews, devoted Kenneth Deshawn Harris and Andrew James Garland Lett-Durant; and nieces; a host of other relatives and friends. LEWIS
J. Earl Lewis, 83, died Thursday, July 12, 2001. Born September 24, 1917 in Nash County, he was the son of the late John and Polly Williams Lewis. He formerly was a gas and oil distributor. He was also a trucking firm owner and merchant. Mr. Lewis retired at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Brock Lewis of the home and by his brother, Durant Lewis of Nashville. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ella Jean Lewis. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Bill Grisham officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. Edna R. Lickey, 75, of Quinton, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001. She is the widow of Bruce E. Lickey and is survived by her children, William Ray Wilkerson of Roanoke and Aubrey Vernon Wilkerson of Keysville, Shirley W. Clement and Sandra W. Withrow; preceded in death by her son, James Cecil Ray Jr.; also survived by 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; also her brothers and sisters, Mary Frances Shook, Henry Daniel Bentley and Forrest Preston Bentley, all of Keysville. She is predeceased by one brother, William Hommer Rutledge. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will recieve friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14. Interment Washngton Memorial Park.

Gladys W. Majette departed this life on July 12, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Freeman Majette; two daughters, Melliny Majette Macklin and Frema Melissa Majette-Draughn; four grandchildren; mother, Nellie Walker; one sister, Marie Morgan; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. from Greens Chapel RZUA Church, Brodnax, Va., with interment in Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery, South Hill, Va. Leon Alton 'Al' Maness, 67, of Aylett, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Snyder Maness; a daughter, Kaye Maness Ash of Richmond; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Alderton of Greensboro, N.C. and Nell Lowder of Pleasant Garden, N.C. Mr. Maness formerly owned and operated Alfa I Carriage House Antiques in Richmond. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Westhampton Memorial Park.
