WOOTEN
Bettie Bruce Taylor Wooten, 92, of Chesterfield County, died December 24, 2000. She was the widow of Charlie Palmer Wooten. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Parrot Wooten Morris of Richmond; grandsons, James Carl Morris Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, and David Palmer Morris; great-grandchildren, Carla, Abby and James Morris IV; sisters, Hattie Lee Smith and Addie Spencer Taylor, both of Kinston, N.C.; brother, Jesse Taylor of Washington, D.C.; sisters-in-law, Harriett Yelverton and Sarah Wooten. The family will receive friends at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Thursday at the Edwards Funeral Home, Kinston, N.C. Interment in Westview Cemetery in Kinston, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 203 N. 11th Ave., Hopewell, Va.

ANDERSON
Marjorie Redden Anderson, 85, of Richmond, died August 18, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delma. Survivors include four children, Gretchen O'Bryan and her husband, Larry, Felix Anderson and his wife, Brenda, Eddie (Andy) Anderson and his wife, Roxie and Bruce Anderson and his wife, Gayle; one stepson, John Anderson of Old Hickory, Tenn.; one brother, Wallace Redden of Salisbury, Md.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

ANDERSON
Richard George Anderson, 77, of Glen Allen, died Saturday, August 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Helen Holley Anderson; two daughters, Patti Jo Anderson and son-in-law, J. David Grose of Yorktown, Va., Cynthia A. Schmidt and son-in-law, David R. Schmidt of Richmond; four grandchildren, Kaitlynn H. Grose, Lauren A. Grose, Travis B. Schmidt and Berkley R. Schmidt. Mr. Anderson was the son of the late Jesse C. and Berkley W. Anderson of Danville, Va. He retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Company as a Security Supervisor and served in the 5th Air Force of the Army during World War II. He was also active in the Telephone Pioneers of America. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2001. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

ARCHER
William Thomas (Mike) Archer Jr. departed this life on Wednesday, August 15, 2001. Preceded in death by his wife, Lorris Wade Archer. He is survived by three daughters, Gale and Glynis Wade of Richmond and Dora Wade of Fredericksburg, Va.; five sons, Danny Wade, Jerome Wade, William Wade and Robert Archer, all of Fredericksburg, Va. and Jeffrey Fountain of Richmond; one sister, Madeline Hilton of White Plains, N.Y.; two daughters-in-law, three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them a devoted friend, Betty Tillery. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Monday 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 21, 12 p.m. at Shalom Baptist Church, 1708 Harwood St. Rev. Hylan Q. Carter, Pastor, officiating. Interment in the Promise Land Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia Co., Va. After 11 a.m. Tuesday, remains will rest in the above named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.

ATKINSON
David Owen Atkinson, age 50, of Aylett, died August 17, 2001. Survived by his wife, Wanda W. Atkinson; a daughter, Megan R. Atkinson; a son, W. Brett Atkinson; his father, William G. Atkinson; two brothers, Stephen A. and George N. Atkinson, all of Chester, Va. Memorial service 4 p.m., Wednesday at Bruington Baptist Church, Bruington, Va. He was a 1975 graduate of Virginia Tech. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the King William Youth Football or King William Little League where he enjoyed coaching for a number of years. B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, in charge of arrangements.

BAILEY
Margaret Clark Bailey, age 83, of Richmond, died Saturday, August 18, 2001. She was the widow of Thomas L. Bailey Sr., and is survived by three sons, Thomas L. Jr., Fugate G. and Andrew Scott Bailey; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bailey was a private duty nurse for 47 years. A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Nelsen Funeral Home, assisting family with the arrangements.

BELTON
Departed this life August 16, 2001, Mrs. Sarah (Piggy) Lewis Belton of 609 N. 35th Street. She is survived by her husband, William Cullen Belton Sr.; three sons, William Cullen Jr., Carl Jerome and Wyatt Hampton Belton; six grandchildren, Anita, Lamont, Antwon, Frizzell, Zotishia and Hope; five great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Irene Richardson, Beulah Prentis, Jean Burrell, Robinette Peebles, Charlene Lewis, Mildred Hunt and Yvonne Lewis; one brother, Robert G. Lewis Jr.; two aunts, Pearl James, Mable Morris; host of nieces, nephews and cousins; two daughters-in-law, Mercie D. and Christabelle Belton; one sister-in-law, Dolly Lewis; four brothers-in-law, Jarvis Thomas, Ellis Richardson, Richard Prentis and Anthony Peebles; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Tuesday, 11 a.m. at Fountain Baptist Church, 32nd and P Streets, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Carrington Parker Jr. (pastor) officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the church 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

BUTLER
Mildred Maddrey Butler, a longime resident of Petersburg, died peacefully in Franklin, Va. on August 18, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, H. Morris Butler. Mrs. Butler was a graduate of Longwood State Teachers College and the VCU School of Music. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed church music very much and over the years was organist and choir director at The Washington Street Methodist Church, The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Petersburg. She enjoyed and was forever grateful for her many friends in the church and music communities. She is survived by her daughter, Janet B. Barker of Tucson, Ariz.; her son, Thomas S. Butler of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances M. Healey of Williamsburg, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 225 Claremont St., Petersburg. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Marks Methodist Church. Mrs. Butler's family is being served by the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Mrs. Essie J. Carver of 3405 Terminal Ave., departed this life Sunday, August 19, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

DOUGLAS
Peyton B. Douglas, 86, of Salem, passed away Friday, August 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn H. Douglas; twin daughters, Emily D. Thomas and husband, Ray of Heathsville, Va., and Rebecca D. Edge and husband, Billy of College Station, Texas. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two great-grandsons, Karen E. Shirley and husband, Hill and son, Tyler, Mark Douglas Edge, Elmer T. "Chip" Walker, William Scott Edge, Kelly W. Antonio and husband, Mike and son, Walker. He was a graduate of the class of 1937 of VPI and SU. He retired from the Agricultural Extension Service after 39 years of service. Following his retirement, he was actively involved in the Roanoke County Farm Bureau and the Salem Historical Society. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was actively involved in his community through his service as a member of the Salem Kiwanis Club for 50 years. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church on East Main St. in Salem. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2001 at the John M. Oakey and Son Salem Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center, 25236 Hillman Hwy., Abingdon, Va. 24210.

EARLY
Edith J. Early, 79, of Chester, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 at the Ruxton Convalescent Center in Richmond. She was a daughter of the late John David Jordan Sr. and Ruth Alma Pate Jordan. Mrs. Early was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Stiegel Early Sr.; and a brother, John David Jordan Jr. She is survived by a son, Jacob Stiegel Early Jr. of Massachusetts; a granddaughter, Rehanna Early of Massachusetts; a sister, Ruth Jordan of Chester; two brothers, Russell L. Jordan of Fairfax Co., and Robert E. Jordan of Ashland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2001, 11:30 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 12201 Richmond St., Chester. Rev. Robert Armstrong will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bensley Bermuda Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 657, Chester, Va. 23831.

Miss Chanel E. Jackson of Richmond, formerly of Charles City, departed this life August 17, 2001. She is survived by her mother, Sonya Jones; stepfather, Dwight Jones; sister, Victoria Jackson; brother, Dwight Jones Jr.; grandparents, Wallace and Constance Price, Ernest Cooper and Irene Jones; aunts, Denise Morris, Darlene Moore and Dometta Miles; uncles, Jose Jackson, Howard Morris, Isaac Miles, Howard Moore, Keith Miles, Kevin Jones, Garland Jones; eight great-aunts, three great-uncles; cousins, Howard Morris IV, Dennis Moore, Cherisse Miles, Nichole Jackson, LaToya Grimes, Jarrell Morris, Crystal Morris, Tyrone Jackson, Lauren Miles, India Morris and Asia Morris; and friends. Her remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, where her family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. After 11 a.m. Tuesday, her remains will rest at Church of Christ, 3200 Dill Ave., where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Bro. Joseph H. Brown officiating. Interment New Vine Baptist Church Cemetery, Charles City County.

LEARY
Leanne McKenzie Leary, 56, of Richmond, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Hugh K. Leary; two sons, Charles D. Larkin and his wife, Kay of Richmond, and McKenzie Larkin and his fiancee, Amy Warner of Providence, R.I.; two stepdaughters, Katherine L. Sebastian and her husband, Jim of Takoma Park, Md., and Mary Hugh Hill and her husband, Sam of Milwaukee, Wis.; four grandchildren, Leanne McKenzie Larkin, Dillon Sebastian, Cole Sebastian and Claudio Hill; her mother, Louise Klein of Tyler, Texas; her sister, Margaret Parks and her husband, Jim; her nieces, Anna Elizabeth Parks and Lea McKenzie Parks of Austin, Texas. Mrs. Leary was a graduate of Southern Methodist University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She had been associated with Bowers Nelms & Fonville Realtors. Mrs. Leary was a member of The Country Club of Virginia, The Woman's Club, Tuckahoe Woman's Club, Tuckahoe Garden Club and was a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Richmond. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to FLAG (For the Love of Animals in Goochland), P.O. Gladys H. McCowan, 63, of Hanover County, departed this life Sunday, August 19, 2001. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. (new facility). Funeral notice later.
