THORNTON
Margaret Perry Thornton, "Muggie" to her friends and family, slipped quietly into the Lord's hands on the morning of July 23, 2001. Born to Dr. Hilliard and Lula Perry in Wendell, N.C., January 11, 1910, she moved to Richmond in the early 1930's. Muggie was an accomplished musician and played professionally until she went to work for Miller and Rhoads. After a long and successful career where she established many lasting friendships, she retired in 1977. Muggie, an avid reader and homemaker, maintained an active correspondence with many throughout her life. Muggie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Thornton and is survived by her loving daughter, Sue Williams; grandsons, David and Tim; and five great-grandchildren, many cousins and many dear friends. The family will receive family and friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. Muggie will be laid to rest in Wendell, N.C. on Wednesday with her husband and parents.

TUCKER
Clarence G. Tucker of 1421 Lenmore St. departed this life July 22, 2001 at MCV Hospitals. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Annie L. Tucker; six children, Gregory, Donavon, Tiwan, Frederick, Tara and Marissa Tucker; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warner Tucker; two brothers, three sisters, 12 grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m. at the New Covenant Apostolic Church, 2129 Ford Ave., where remains will lie in state at 12 noon. Bishop Willie G. Suggs officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Family and friends attending services assemble at the church Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.

UPDEGRAFF
Carroll "Bunky" Updegraff, age 69, of Pickerington, Ohio and formerly of Baltimore, Md. and Richmond, Va., passed away July 21, 2001 at the Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware, Ohio. He was retired from Lucent Technologies. Carroll also was a member of Seton Parish, Pickerington American Legion Post No.283, and was a United States Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. Bunky was a devoted father and husband who is survived by his wife, Mary (Nevy) Updegraff; daughter, Holly Updegraff, both of Pickerington; sons, Dale Updegraff of Sandstone, Va. and Michael Updegraff; and grandson, Justin Updegraff; brother, Harry Updegraff; and sister, Pearl Hudson, all of Baltimore, Md.; mother-in-law, Charlotte Nevy, Pickerington. He was preceded in death by his parents, and several brothers and sisters. Friends may visit Tuesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home & Crematory, 550 Hill Road North (State Route No. 256), Pickerington, Ohio 43147, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday with Deacon David J. Kruse officiating. The Pickerington American Legion Post No. 283 will hold military veteran rites 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

WATSON
Sandra E. Watson of 1102 Althea Parkway died July 23, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Pk. Blvd. Funeral notice later.

WILLIAMS
George Harry Williams M.D., FACS, 69, of Richmond, died Saturday, July 21, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Morris Williams; four children, Bryan Williams, Elizabeth Williams M.D., Carolyn Williams DeLong, Michelle Williams Morano; six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Bernard Potts; and Rascal and Sissy. Dr. Williams was professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Virginia, founder of the Cochlear Implant Program, past president of the Richmond Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Recipient of a Certificate of Honor for the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Foundation in 1992, and a longtime member and past chairman of Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital Board of Directors. He was also an avid golfer, a member of the Captains and unpublished author of "The Captains", a history of that group, an Eagle Scout and an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, a miniature train buff and a carver of miniature birds. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the MCV Foundation for Otolaryngology-Clinical Training, Box 980234, Richmond, Va. 23298, The Robert E. Lee Council, Boy Scouts of America, 4015 Fitzhugh Ave., Richmond, Va. or the Virginia Home for Boys, 8716 W. Broad St., Richmond, Va.

WILLIAMS
Mary Eurie Williams, 84, died Monday, July 23, 2001 in Richmond, Va. Miss Williams lived most of her life in her native Matoaca, Va. and in Petersburg, Va. She had been living in Richmond since 1994. Miss Williams was a retired dental assistant who worked for a number of years at the dental clinic at Fort Lee. She was an active member of the Virginia Dental Assistants Association and the American Dental Association in the 1950's and 1960's. Miss Williams was the last surviving of the 11 children of Charles Bland Williams and Anniebelle Holt Williams of Matoaca. She is survived by eight nieces, six nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday in East Matoaca Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Virginia, P.O. Box 7065, Richmond, Va. 23221-0065 or the West End Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11144, Richmond, Va. 23230. J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, in charge of arrangements.

YOUNG
Betty Harvey Young, age 78, of the Masonic Home of Virginia, widow of Edward George Young, died Monday, July 23, 2001. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lisa Cable. She is survived by her children, Cindy Evans, Nancy Morris and her husband, Ron, Richard Young, Glenna Redd and her husband, Jeff; her grandchildren, April Ferguson Estes, Christie Evans, Jason Evans and his wife, Heidi, Denny Cable and his wife, Weston; Summer Redd and Joel Redd; also 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Young was a member of Sandston Presbyterian Church, past member of the Cedaretts, past member of Job's Daughters. The family will receive friends 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sandston Presbyterian Church, and where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia or to Sandston Presbyterian Church.

ANDREWS
Sarah E. Andrews of 712 Arnold Ave. died February 5, 2002. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

AUTRY
Hosea Murphy "Hosie" Autry, 95, of Richmond, passed away Monday, February 4, 2002. He was the son of John Calvin Autry and Margaret Daniels. He proudly served in the the Army with tours in Panama and Ft. Monroe and was a retired employee of Ethyl Corp. He was the widower of Esther Virginia Jackson and is survived by his son, Kenneth Wade Autry and his wife, Claudia; his daughter, Margaret Ann Samuel and her husband, Arnold; and one grandson, Benjamin Scott Samuel and his wife, Susan. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Dale Memorial Park.

CHILDRESS
Willie John Childress, age 70, of Charlotte Court House, died Monday, February 4, 2002. He was owner and operator of Childress's TV in Drakes Branch for the past 38 years. Surviving are his wife, Doris H. Childress; one daughter, Dorinda Clements of Farmville; one son, Chip Childress of Fredericksburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Tatum, Raden and Hunter; one brother, Joe Childress of Phenix; three sisters, Janie Evans of Phenix, Nell Sims of Drakes Branch and Mamie Evans of Charlotte Court House. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Bethel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

COMBS
Hallie A. Combs, 80, of Powhatan, widow of Herman B. Combs, passed away February 4, 2002. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Herman Jr. and Betty Combs, Tommy and Betsy Combs, all of Powhatan; two daughters, Kay and her husband, Dave Clark of Powhatan, Shirley Bowman of Florida; two sisters, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Courtney Hardy. A graveside service will be held Wednesday (today) at 11 a.m. in the Powhatan Community Cemetery. Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, Powhatan, conducting services.

ECKWRIGHT
Sharon King Eckwright, 49, of Sandston, passed away after a brief illness Tuesday, February 5, 2002. She was preceded in death by her father, William Edward King Jr.; and is survived by her husband of 23½ years, Roger David Eckwright; her son, Roger Troy "Goofy" Eckwright; her mother, Helen Jackson Carver; and her stepfather, Fuller Carver; her closest friends, Nina Burgess, Kay Crouch and Darlene Martin; and many other friends. She was employed by Henrico County's Pupil Transportation as a school bus driver for 15 years, most recently on Bus No. 266, and a lifelong member of Sandston Baptist Church. She was loved and will be missed by her family and all who knew her. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive family and friends 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Riverview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad.

EVANS

FENDERSON
Mary Gagnon Fenderson, 99, of Richmond, died February 5, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard M. Fenderson; son, Ronald F. Fenderson; and daughter, Beverly H. Fenderson. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth F. Luffsey and her husband, Roland; five grandchildren, Colleen L. Hodges, Ronald R. Luffsey, Judie L. Fischer, Cheri L. Miller and Paula L. Ball; 17 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where there will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Wednesday and where the family will receive friends following the service until 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial and interment will take place at a later date at Westbrook, Maine.

GARY
Marguerite M. Gary, 76, of Richmond, died February 5, 2002. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a Women of the Moose Service being held 7:30 p.m. Thursday by the Sandston Moose Lodge, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Funeral notice later.

HALLER
Elsie W. Haller, 104, widow of Richard B. Haller Sr., died Monday, February 4, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Nell Hobson and her husband, Milton; two sons, Bob W. Haller and his wife, Alyce and Dick B. Haller and his wife, Joan, all of Richmond; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Haller was a member of Northside Baptist Church since 1925. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where services will be held Wednesday 11 a.m. Interment in Riverview Cemetery.

JACKSON
Departed this life on Saturday, February 2, 2002, Adell Tyler Jackson of Richmond. Her husband, William Jackson Sr., preceded her in death. She is survived by four daughters, Priscilla Sneed, Rev. Dr. LaVerne Briggs, Brenda Franisco and Delores Jackson; one son, William Jackson Jr.; six grandchildren, Franika Franisco, Junelle and William Jackson III, Carl, Keith and Kevin Sneed; two sisters, Maggie Jackson of Goochland and Fano Williams of Richmond; one uncle, Tom Mealy of Goochland; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Leroy Williams of Richmond and Joseph Jackson of Goochland, and other relatives and friends. One devoted friend, Gloria Cobert of Richmond. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 1 p.m. at Fifth Baptist Church, 1514 W. Cary Street, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Dr. Earl M. Brown, pastor, officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 12:45 p.m.
