PAXTON
Ed F. Paxton, age 53, of Richmond, Va., passed away on March 20, 2001, after a short illness. He is survived by his mother, Jane Paxton of Cowdry, Colo.; sons, Ernest Paxton and Matthew Paxton of Richmond, Va., and their mother, Lynn Clayton of London, England; brothers, Perry Paxton of Anaheim, Calif., and Steven Paxton of Lubbock, Texas; and a longtime friend, Juanita Fulghum of Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Road, Richmond, Va. 23221 at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23. Visitation will follow services in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ed F. Paxton Scholarship Fund, which will enable deserving and motivated students to receive an International Business Certificate through the VCU School of Business. Fully deductible contributions can be sent to: Paxton Fund, Office of the Dean of the School of Business, Virginia Commonwealth University, P.O. Box 844000, Richmond, Va. 23284-4000.

RAGUNAS
Vincent Joseph Ragunas, 76, of Richmond, passed away Monday, March 19, 2001, in his residence. He is survived by his wife, Jean Wooten Ragunas; two sisters, Genevieve R. Lloyd of Evansville, Ind., and Matilda R. Raklewicz of Harvey's Lake, Pa.; and a brother, Anthony Ragunas of Newport News. Mr. Ragunas was a graduate of the 1949C Class of VMI, was a US Army veteran of WWII, former tailback with the Pittsburgh Steelers, assistant coach with VMI and Florida State, superintendent for Turner Construction in Philadelphia, and was retired from the Department of General Services of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A private service will be held at the mausoleum in Hollywood Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the VMI Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 932, Lexington, Va. 24450.

READE
Katherine Harris Reade, 87, of Richmond, widow of Eugene W. "Jack" Reade Jr., died Saturday, March 17, 2001. Mrs. Reade was born November 4, 1913, in Bahama, N.C., and was predeceased by her brother, Lt. Russell Harris in 1945 of wounds in WWII. Survivors include two sons, Eugene W. Reade III of Bloomington, Ind., and E. Harris Reade of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Daryl Reade Kessler, Indianapolis, Ind., and Christopher Harris Reade, Fountain Valley, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Kailey, Joe, Madison and Hannah. A private family graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, Va., on March 21, 2001.

SMITH
Departed this life March 20, 2001, Clide A. (Sonny) Smith of Richmond, Va., formerly of King William Co. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, McCarthy, Director.

SPITLER
Lillian Earle Spitler of Richmond died March 20, 2001, in John Randolph Hospital. Mrs. Spitler was born in Lovingston, Va., a daughter of the late Joseph and Lilly Wood Woody. She is survived by her husband, Curtis L. Spitler of Richmond; two daughters and their husbands, Shelby Jean and Lester W. Hall, Deborah L. and Roy M. Glass, all of Stuarts Draft; a grandson and wife, Ricky A. and Katherine Hall of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter and husband, Jennifer H. and Chris Shiflet of Stuarts Draft; grandson, Todd A. Glass of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Katie and Alexandra Hall, Kaylyn and Brandon Shiflet; a niece, Jean Campbell and her children of Luray; and a nephew, Jimmy Allen and his wife of Winchester. A committal service will be held in the mausoleum in Sunset Memorial Park at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 23. The family will receive friends at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd., Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made in her memory to the American Red Cross.

STEWART
Departed this life March 16, 2001, Mrs. Bessie M. Stewart of 5807 Baron Dr., Chesterfield. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Stewart; three sons, Anthony, Breean and Casey Stewart; one daughter, Yasmin M. Brown; four grandchildren; one brother, Oliver McNeil of North Carolina; two sisters, Marian Torain of New York and Geraldine Savage of Connecticut; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; one daughter-in-law, Tammy Stewart; one son-in-law, Ronald Brown; other relatives and friends, among them one devoted, Edith McLane. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Thursday 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Friday 1 p.m. Dr. Earl Brown officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

STEWART
Shirley Stewart departed this life March 12, 2001. She is survived by her son, Maurice McCall; mother, Geneva Stewart; brothers; daughter-in-law, Celestine McCall; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St., where funeral services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m. Interment Maury Cemetery. TANSEY
John Bernard Tansey, 84, of Midlothian, died Monday, March 19, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Shannon Hornor Tansey; three daughters, Quita Tansey Collins, Maureen M. Tansey and Colleen Tansey Keller; two sons, Michael S. Tansey and Kevin C. Tansey; two brothers, Robert and Bill Tansey; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. A memorial service will be held 12 noon Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace St. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Greater Richmond, Communities In Schools of Chesterfield or the Hawthorne, the Cancer Resource Center at Johnston-Willis Hospital.

TAYLOR
Joyce Ann Rilley Taylor of Richmond departed this life March 18, 2001. She was the widow of Robert N. Taylor Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband; two sons, Robert N. Taylor Jr. and Michael E. Taylor; one stepdaughter, Robinette Bowles; father, George Rilley; six grandchildren; two foster brothers, Larry and James Faison; one stepsister, Shirley Johnson; a host of nieces and nephews; one devoted uncle, Jack Burrell; a host of cousins; mother-in-law, Bernice Taylor; seven sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law; other relatives and friends, among them two devoted, Stephanie Valentine and Deborah Hickman. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where funeral services will be held Friday, 10 a.m. Rev. Jullian Minor officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

TUCK
Mrs. Barbara Johnson Tuck, 72, of Victoria, Va., died March 20, 2001. Mrs. Tuck was a homemaker and a member of the Victoria Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, James A. Tuck of Victoria; her daughter and son-in-law, Kyna T. and Vern Otey of Lunenburg; her son, James L. Tuck of Lunenburg; her grandsons, Seth and Kyle Otey; her sister, Bernice J. Mattox of Victoria; and her sister-in-law, Evelyn S. Johnson of Savannah, Ga. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, in the Victoria Baptist Church with burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Staples Funeral Home in Victoria. Memorial donations may be made to the Victoria Fire and Rescue or to the Victoria Baptist Church.

WEST
Ms. Antionette Diane Underwood-Mitchell-West, 50, of 6 Spring Ct., Petersburg, died Monday evening at her residence. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg.

AYSCUE
Floyd Allen Ayscue, 73, of Colonial Heights, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001. He was a native of Colonial Heights and was the son of the late Frank and Lottie Bowles Ayscue. His wife, Mildred Fowler Ayscue, preceded him in death. Mr. Ayscue retired from Wachovia Bank and was employed by Ukrops as a courtesy clerk. He is survived by two daughters, Joan A. Thomas and her husband, Ken of Chesterfield and Judy A. Ayscue of Colonial Heights; two grandchildren, Kristin T. Browder and Gregory L. Thomas, both of Chesterfield; a great-grandson, Austin Browder; two sisters, Blanche Bridger and Ruth Hawkins, both of Colonial Heights; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home by Rev. Terry L. Harper, Pastor of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

BAKER
Samuel H. Baker Jr., 84, of Richmond, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marjorie Timberlake Baker; two sons, Samuel H. Baker III of Williamsburg, Thomas P. Baker of Keswick; two daughters-in-law, Barbara S. Baker, Susie J. Baker; four grandchildren, T. Preston Baker Jr., Samuel H. Baker IV, Mollie B. Krebs, Bryan H. Baker; one great-grandchild; three stepchildren, Neenah McDonald, Sydney Altmann and Chip Pemberton. Mr. Baker was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia T. Baker, who died in 1970; and his brother, Judge E. Ballard Baker. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1101 Forest Ave., followed by interment in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

BLANTON
Mrs. Sara Matthews Hardy Blanton, 77, of Castleton, Vt., and a longtime resident of Farmville, Va., died Tuesday evening, April 3, 2001, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland, Vt. Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at Johns Memorial Church in Farmville, Va.

BUTLER
Earl Lloyd Butler, age 72, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, a former member of the Asbestos Workers Local #88 and was in automobile sales and management for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Long Butler; a son, Kenny and his wife, Kim Butler; a daughter, Carol Gaines and her husband, John; a son, Ron and his wife, Janine Butler; one sister, Shirley Ford and her husband, Winton; six grandchildren, Holley, Carrie and Andrew Butler, Michael Gaines and William and LeAnn Butler. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., Glen Allen, where the funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missionary Fund of Immanuel Baptist Church, 3601 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230 or to the Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226.

COVEY
Daniel P. Covey, age 28, of Richmond, died Thursday, April 5, 2001. Survived by his parents, Perly and Julia Covey. Arrangements by the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral notice later.

CRAWFORD
Nellie Pence Crawford, age 78, of Hampden-Sydney, died in Farmville on March 25, 2001. She was a retired registered nurse. She is survived by two nieces and five nephews. A memorial service will be held at College Presbyterian Church, Hampden-Sydney, on April 8 at 2 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Moore Student Health Center, c/o Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Va. 23943; Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad, Farmville, Va. 23901; or charity of donor's choice. Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home of Farmville in charge of arrangements.

CUSTALOW
Phillip H. Custalow Sr., 61, of Manquin, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Custalow; five children, Teresa Rose, Ted Shuey, Tony Shuey, Phillip Custalow Jr., and Angela Pisano; nine grandchildren, two sisters, Christine Custalow and Joyce Cornell; four brothers, Otho, Curtis, Bernard and David Custalow. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment Mattaponi Baptist Church Cemetery, King William County.
