Cardwell

Clarence Lee Cardwell, age 61, of Hopewell, formerly of Saltville, died Thursday, July 17, 1997. He was a Christian and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Sarah Cardwell; two brothers, Ed Cardwell and Melvin Cardwell; and two sisters, Vernor Terry and Lois Cardwell.

Mr. Cardwell had worked at Allied Signal in Hopewell for the past eight years.

Survivors include his wife, Laura M. Cardwell; one daughter, Mary E. Armstrong, Vinton; one son, John "Tommy" Cardwell, Chester; four brothers, Herbert Cardwell and Ralph Cardwell, both of Rock Falls, Ill., Clyde Willard Cardwell, Saltville and Hubert Cardwell, Erie, Ill.; one sister, Barbara O'Neal, Portales, N.M.; three grandchildren: Allen Armstrong, Vinton, and Sarah and Hanna Cardwell, Chester.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Talley and the Rev. Chuck Blevins officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Dority

William Howard Dority, age 62, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997 at his home in Niceville, Fla.

Mr. Dority was born in Marion on Dec. 29, 1934, to Howard and Rosa G. Sessor Dority and had been a resident of the Northwest Florida area for the past four years. Prior to moving there, he lived in Virginia Beach. Mr. Dority was an insurance Underwriter for 30 years and had been employed by Met Life, Colonial Penn, and Allstate Insurance Companies.

He was a member of the Virginia FAIR plan; the New Hampshire Auto Facility Underwriting Committee; the Alliance of American Insurers; a Representative to Insurance Committees for Motor Vehicle Administrators and gave seminars and training sessions at trade association meetings for over 12 years.

He enjoyed the excitement of power boat races and insured power boat owners during his retirement. He was a member of the Niceville United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jane (Sunderland) Dority of Niceville, Fla.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bobbi and Nanci Dority of Wakefield, R.I., William Dority of Virginia, Thomas and Linda Dority of Charlestown, R.I., and Scott and Julie Keating of Norfolk; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori Jo and Leonard Wahl of Providence, R.I., and Debra Lynn and Thomas Keating-Cole of Cranston, R.I.; eight grandchildren: Lisa Wahl, Michael Wahl, Scott Keating, Joshua Keating, B.J. Dority, Savannah Rose Dority, Rebecca Dority, and Nicole Dority; two sisters and brother-in-law, Rozeanne and Raymond Rowland of Marion, and Eleanor Gentry of Baltimore, Md.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., with the Rev. J. Edward Chandler officiating.

Garnett

Robert Seldon "Bob" Garnett, age 87, died Saturday, July 19, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a well-known Marion banker.

Mr. Garnett was born in Fredericksburg in 1910. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1928 and worked two years in a clothing store at Fredericksburg before beginning a 50 year banking career. He worked eight years at the First & Merchants State Bank at Fredericksburg, then came to Marion in 1938 to work as a teller at the Bank of Marion.

In December 1941, Garnett volunteered for the U.S. Navy. After basic training, he was posted to the Naval Air Station at Dallas, Texas where he met Mary Lou Jackson. They married at Hampton on April 3, 1943. In July 1944, Garnett was posted to the USS LaPrade (Destroyer Escort #409) on which he served 16 months in the South Pacific as storekeeper, first class.

After discharge from the Navy in October 1945, he worked four years in banks at Fredericksburg and Richmond, then returned to the Bank of Marion in December 1949. He worked at the Bank of Marion a total of 39 years, holding the positions of teller, cashier, executive vice president, director, and chairman of the board. He retired in 1978, but served on the board of directors until 1986.

Garnett held offices in the Virginia Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers Association of Marion. He was a founding member of the Virginia Independent Bankers Association, which will honor his contribution with a posthumous award.

A member of the BPO Elks since age 21, Garnett helped organize an Elks lodge at Marion and served two years as its exalted ruler. He is a past commander of the Fredericksburg American Legion Post, a past president of the Marion Kiwanis Club, a former scoutmaster and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Atkins Ruritan Club, and the First United Methodist Church at Marion.

Throughout his life, Garnett was a popular public speaker. Before moving from Marion to Mount Carmel in 1968, Garnett served three years in the Marion Town Council. He served as an election judge in Smyth County for 30 years and as an original member of the Board of Directors of Smyth County Community Hospital. An avid baseball enthusiast, Garnett helped organize Marion Baseball Inc., which for 12 years hosted a farm club of the New York Mets. Throughout this time, Garnett served as organization president and public address announcer. He also announced football games at Marion High School for 28 years. He was honored by the Appalachian Baseball League as Outstanding Business Executive for 1966 and by the Marion Civitan Club for Outstanding Community Service in 1967.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou Garnett; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Susan and Peter S. Copenhaver of Ocean City, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lewis and Carolyn Sade Garnett of Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Louise Goodwin of Fredericksburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Judge Henry D. and Frances Garnett of Troy; two grandsons, Thomas G. and J. Robert Copenhaver, both of Ocean City, Md.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James S. Pollock and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354.

Ray

Ronald Lesley Ray, age 25, formerly of Saltville, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 in High Point, N.C. He attended Bible Revival Church, Kernersville, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Spencer Ray; one daughter, Ashley Nicole Ray, High Point, N.C.; his mother and stepfather, Ester and Marvin Hayden, Saltville; his father, Roy Ray, High Point, N.C.; three sisters, Michelle Thompson, Clinchburg, Sonya Ray and Virgie Mae Hayden, both of Saltville; one brother, Marvin Ray Hayden Jr., Saltville; one stepbrother, Michael Hayden, Glade Spring; two stepsisters, Joy Harris and Susan Neely, both of Chilhowie.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, July 23, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Stanley and the Rev. Bobby Collins officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Ray

Roy Darrell Ray, age 28, formerly of Saltville, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 in High Point, N.C. He attended the Bible Revival Church, Kernersville, N.C.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ester and Marvin Hayden, Saltville; his father, Roy Ray, High Point, N.C.; three sisters, Michelle Thompson, Clinchburg, Sonya Ray and Virgie Mae Hayden, both of Saltville; one brother, Marvin Ray Hayden Jr., Saltville; one stepbrother, Michael Hayden, Glade Spring; two stepsisters, Joy Harris and Susan Neely, both of Chilhowie.

Sheets

Gordie L. Sheets, age 94, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 at the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. He was a member of the Comers Creek Baptist Church in Troutdale.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Guy Parks of Sugar Grove; five sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Lydia Sheets, Jim and Doris Sheets, Bill and Laura Mae Sheets, Ken and Debbie Sheets, all of Marion, and Raymond and Sarah Sheets of Sugar Grove; one sister-in-law, Pauline Clark of War, W.Va.; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, July 23, at 2 p.m. at Comers Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Duvall and the Rev. Mike Parks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Surber

Rosie Miller Surber, age 74, of Marion, formerly of Konnarock, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Konnarock and the widow of J.D. Surber. She was a charter member of Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Gail Pennington, Damascus, and Donna Jean Price, Abingdon; three sons, Jack E. Reedy, Houston, Texas, Ronnie Charles E. Reedy, Marion, and Randall Lee Surber, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Vada Tiefel, Washington D.C., and Gladys Donoghue, Rockville, Md.; two brothers, Luther Miller, Abingdon, and Wayne Miller, Greensboro, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Wilma Miller; two brothers-in-law, Bill Tiefel and Jack Donoghue; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, July 23, at 11 a.m. in Konnarock Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Pastor Ron Ihrig officiating. Burial will be in Azen Cemetery.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus is in charge of arrangements.
