JANICE WOOD TAYLOR

MILTON -- Janice Wood Taylor, 84, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, April 2, 2002, at Redstone Villa Health Care Facility. She was born in Georgia, April 20, 1917, the daughter of the late Burt H. and Mary (Hotchkiss) Wood.

Her husband, Harold B. Taylor died April 27, 1990. Janice was an avid fan of all sports.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Mary and John Foster of St. Albans; two sons, Don H. and his wife, Barbara D. Taylor of Raleigh, N.C., and George T. Taylor and his wife, Melody Hutchings of Milton. She also leaves six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Milton Rescue, Bombardier Road, Milton, Vt. 05468. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

KATHRYN H. BRESSETTE

PUNTA GORDA, Fla./ST. ALBANS -- Kathryn H. Bressette, age 93 of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, April 1, 2002. Born April 23, 1908, in St. Albans.

She was the daughter of the late Timothy and Mary (Sheehan) Holland, she also resided in Wayland, Mass. and East Providence, R.I. before moving to Punta Gorda in 1986. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughter Judith K. Alves of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a son, J. David Bressette of Newbury, S.C.; three granddaughters Lynne Alves of Miami, Fla., Karen Alley of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Kara Bressette of Newbury, S.C.; a grandson, Mark Bressette of Newbury, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren Alexandra, Ciara and Austin Alley of Ft. Myers, Fla.

Burial services will be conducted at a later date in St. Albans, where inurnment will take place in the family lot at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda, Fla. and Brady & Levesque Funeral Home in St. Albans.

RICKY JULIUS GABREE, JR.

ST. ALBANS -- Ricky J. Gabree, Jr., 25, a lifelong resident of St. Albans, passed away unexpectedly Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002 in St. Albans. He was born in St. Albans Aug. 15, 1976, son of Ricky J. Gabree, Sr., and Dora M. (Robtoy) Gabree. Ricky worked with his father in masonry and roofing.

He was a member of the Church of the Rock and enjoyed playing guitar and spending time with his nephews, Dalton and Nicholas Pion.

Ricky is survived by his father, Ricky J. Gabree, Sr. and his wife, Tracy of Enosburg Falls, and his mother, Dora (Robtoy) Brodeur and her husband, Michael of Swanton; his maternal grandfather, Landon Robtoy of St. Albans; and maternal grandparents, Perley Gabree of Swanton and Joyce Gabree of St. Albans. He also leaves his sisters, Alexis Gabree of Swanton and Tracy Pion and her husband, Brian of St. Albans; a step-brother, William Bilodeau; and two step-sisters, Danielle and Nicole Bilodeau, all of St. Albans; nephews, Dalton and Nicholas Pion of St. Albans; special cousin, Michael Levick; and special aunt, Ginger Olio; and aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Betty Robtoy; uncle, David Robtoy; and cousin, Bernie Levick.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Rock, Route 104, Fairfax Road, with the pastor, the Reverend Roland Ludlam, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

DONALD F. MARTIN

FRANKLIN ญญ Donald F. Martin, 58, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born April 24, 1943, in Woodsville, N.H., a son of the late Donald and Ester Mae (Brown) Martin.

He was a resident of Franklin since 1980 and had grown up in Winooski graduating from Winooski High School in 1961. He graduated from Castleton State College in 1970 with a B.S. degree and graduated from Johnson State College in 1982 with a M.A. degree. Donald's teaching career started at the Weeks School in Vergennes. He taught special education for two years in Australia and then Alburg. He then served terms as principal at Franklin Elementary School, Richford Elementary School and Montgomery School. His last position was as a science teacher at Bakersfield Elementary School, retiring Friday, March 29.

Donald was selected as chairperson of the Vermont Public School Approval Process. He was noted in Volume 3 of the "International Who's Who in Education in 1985, " "Who's Who in American Education in 1987-1988" and the "U.S. Registry's Who's Who in 1995-1996." He also was appointed to the State Advisory Council for the University of Vermont.

Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was an avid football and baseball fan, having a love-hate relationship with the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Gamache) Martin of Franklin; three children, Daniel Todd Martin and his wife, Therese, of Hardwick, Scott Francis Martin and his wife, Pamela, of Highgate and Kelly Moore and her husband, Scott, of Winooski; six grandchildren, Steven, Cassandra, Cameron, Colin and Natalie Martin and Maizey Moore; and a sister and her husband, Charlene and Donald Cole of San Francisco, Calif.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Franklin Rescue Squad, Main St., Franklin, Vt. 05457 or to the Franklin Fire Department, Main St., Franklin, Vt. 05457.

Spears Funeral Home of Enosburg Falls is in charge of arrangements.

OSBORNE "OSSIE" MARTIN

SWANTON -- Osborne "Ossie" Martin, 85, a longtime Swanton resident passed away Friday evening March 29, 2002.

Ossie was born in Highgate Center, April 23, 1916, the son of the late Lewis and Rose (Harvey) Martin. He attended Sheldon schools and on, May 25, 1944, was married in Belfast Ireland to the former Maureen Mayock who predeceased him on June 2, 1996.

For many years Ossie was associated in sales for the former City Feed and Lumber Company. In earlier years he had worked for both Wirthmore Feeds in St. Albans and Skeels and Weedman in Swanton. He and his wife Maureen will be remembered for operating a greenhouse on their Route 7 property.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and later received the Purple Heart Medal for injuries received in an explosion while serving in the European Theater in Belgium. He was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Ossie leaves his daughter, Stella Martin of Stowe; and two sons, David and his Wife Donna of Underhill Center and Rory and his wife Debbie of Swanton. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jennifer, Brennan, Matthew, Chris, Aurora and Devlyn Martin.

A Graveside Funeral service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the Martin family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery, 65 Canada Street Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE, the pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton and Saint Louis Parish in Highgate Center will officiate There will be no calling hours, however the family will receive friends at a luncheon reception following the services at the My-T-Fine Creamery Restaurant, (formerly The Pines) located on Vermont Route 7 in Highgate Springs. In lieu of flowers gifts in Ossie's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home in Swanton.

JOYCE LANOUE

ST. ALBANS ญญ Joyce Lanoue, 55, died Friday, March 29, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a brief illness.

She was born a daughter of the late Clyde and Elizabeth (King) Martin on March 23, 1947. She was a line worker for Union Carbide, Bertek and the Venetian Blind Company of America, retiring in 1995. She will be remembered as a very loving and caring mother, sister and friend.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Lanoue of Johnson; two daughters, Angela Duhame and her husband, William, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Melissa Lanoue of San Antonio, Texas; four sisters, Phyllis Kelley and her husband, Wilbur, of St. Albans, Dorothy Page of Liberty Hill, Texas, Donna Lesage and her husband, Richard, of Colchester, and Patricia Whitehead of Burlington; one brother, Norman Martin and his wife, Bernice, of Woodsville, N.H., and a half-brother, Raymond "Frank" Wagner of Fairfield; two aunts, Katherine Winters of Barre and Edna Phillips of Elsworth, Maine; and several nieces nephews and cousins.

She will be missed by three special friends, Diane Bergman, Carol Lafar and Donny Constantine.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the American Hearth Association, Box 485, Williston, Vt. 05495.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

CARMEN FIRKEY

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Carmen (Berger) Firkey, age 73, died Friday afternoon, March 29, 2002, in the Roncalli Health Care Center following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in St. Albans, Jan. 3, 1929, daughter of the late Edward and Lillian (Chicoine) Berger.

Carmen was employed as a sales clerk at JCPenney Store in St. Albans for many years.

Carmen was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and a member of the Ladies of St. Anne. Nov. 13, 1948, she married Rudolph Firkey. Rudy died Feb. 16, 1998.

Her survivors include her sons, Ronald and his longtime partner Ann Fournier of Bolton, Michael and his wife, Roxanne of St. Albans; dedicated caregiver Jessie Firkey of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Ronald Firkey, Jason Firkey, Christina Toussaint and Melinda Firkey; five great-grandchildren, three sisters, Gloria Grew and Lucille Waine both of St. Albans, Rita and her husband John Cross of Essex Jct.; several nieces and nephews and her special friend Father Vincent Onunkwo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Holy Angels Church. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will be in the Firkey family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or St. Anne's Shrine, P.O. Box 280, Isle LaMotte, Vt. 05463. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

BARBARA CROSS

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Barbara R. Cross, age 70, died Saturday morning, March 30, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center following several years of failing health. Barb was born in St. Albans, Nov. 23, 1931, daughter of the late Thomas and Zora (Cheney) Hemingway.

She married Edmond L. Cross, Jr., Aug. 28, 1954. Barbara was a stenographer and clerical worker for the University of Vermont Extension Service and later for the Franklin County Vocational and Rehabilitation Services Division.

For the past several years, due to failing health, she operated a telephone answering service from her home, for Dr. M.A. Robinson, DVM and for the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a former member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter # 321 of St. Albans. She showed remarkable strength to her family and friends, never complaining about her extended confinement to braces and wheelchair mobility. When she was able, she knitted and crocheted for many. The only time she could not be disturbed was when her soap operas were being televised.

She will be greatly missed by grandchildren, her memory and strength will be carried on by her survivors which include her devoted husband of over 47 years, Edmond Cross, Jr., of St. Albans; three children, Sharon Cross and her fiance Homer St. Francis II, David and his wife Kate Cross and Linda Cross, all of Swanton; six grandchildren, Angela, and her boyfriend Jordan Hubbard, Jessica and Travis Cross, Reginald, Ricky and Rebecca Robair. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Elmer Hemingway of St. Albans, Jacqueline and Edward Horter of South River, N.J., Robert and Bernadette Hemingway of South Hero, Earl Hemingway of East Windsor, Conn.; two god-children, Dawn Britch and Janet Hemingway; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation for the many hours devoted to Barbara's care by the Home Health services.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in the Cross family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave. Colchester, Vt. 05446. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
