Ethel M. Knight
Cornwall, Vermont

Ethel May Knight, 90, died Saturday, November 27, 1999 at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.
She was born April 21, 1909 in Shoreham, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Jabot) Beyette. She worked as an operator for the Shoreham Telephone Company for many years, and also served as a Cornwall fire phone volunteer. Beginning in 1950, she owned and operated Knight's Nursing Home until the early 1960's. She continued using her skills as a caregiver, on an individual level, for many years following the closing of her nursing home.
She is survived by a foster daughter, Dorothy Kelsey of Uxbridge, Massachusetts; two sisters, Alice Lowell of Middlebury and Freda Pentek of Proctor; a brother, Raymond Beyette, Sr. of Proctor; five foster grandchildren, Susan Bishop, Sheryl Goulet, Gwen Chauvin, Glendon Kelsey and Mark Kelsey; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Edward Knight, whom she married April 20, 1932; a sister, Helen Newton Walker; and three half-brothers, Victor, Frank and Louis Beyette.
Ethel will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her deep faith, her nurturing qualities and her ability to turn a dark day into light.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, November 29, 1999 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury. The Reverend John McDermott, Pastor, was the celebrant.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Addison County Humane Society, 232 Boardman Street, Middlebury, Vermont 05753.

Dorothy R. Rubsamen
Brandon, Vermont

Dorothy Ruth Rubsamen, 84, died Saturday, November 27, 1999 at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Rutland.
Mrs. Rubsamen was born in Passaic, New Jersey on May 13, 1915. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Bertha (McColl) Kievit. She received her early education in Clifton, New Jersey schools. In her early years, she had worked as a seamstress in Patterson, New Jersey. She married Edward Rubsamen on April 18, 1936 in Clifton, New Jersey. Mr. Rubsamen died in July, 1992. She had been a co-owner and operator with her husband of Eddie's Deli in Clifton, New Jersey. Following her retirement, she moved to Russell, Kentucky where she had been a member of Russell Senior Citizens. She returned to Nutley, New Jersey in 1986. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton, New Jersey. She had worked for several years as a Practical Nurse, at Beth Israel Hospital in Patterson, New Jersey. Mrs. Rubsamen moved to Vermont in 1992 coming from Nutley, New Jersey.
She is survived by one son George K. Rubsamen of San Diego, California; three daughters, Beverly A. Sabatini of Brandon, Lorraine L. Tani of Ocala, Florida and Carol L. Dolcemascola of Deerfield Beach, Florida and a sister Joyce Thompson of Clifton, New Jersey. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers; Raymond Kievit and Cornelius Kievit.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Green Mountain Chapter, PO Box 1139, Montpelier, Vermont 05601.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home of Brandon.

Alfred J. Crue
Leicester, Vermont

Alfred John Crue, 70, died upon arrival at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Crue was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey on July 26, 1929. He was the son of George and Barbara (Vogeney) Crue. He had been a permanent resident of Leicester since 1976, moving there from North Bellmore, Long Island, New York. He and his family had summered on Lake Dunmore since 1957.
He retired as a construction superintendent from Brisk Water Roofing Company after 30 years of service. He was a life member of the North Bellmore, New York and Merrick, New York Volunteer Fire Departments. After moving to Vermont he had owned and operated Johnnie's Grocery Store in Forestdale for several years. He later joined the sales department at Billings Mobile Homes in Rutland; he had also been the area representative for Franklin Life Insurance Company. He had owned and operated the local furniture store in Brandon for 10 years. He was a member and past president of the Brandon Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past member of Wantagh Masonic Lodge in Bellmore, New York. He was currently a member of St. Paul's Masonic Lodge #25 F & A.M. in Brandon. He belonged to Cairo Temple Shrine Clubs including The Hillbilly's, Elbon Shrine Club and Burlington Cellar Savers, and the Green Mountain Boys. He had served on the 4th of July Parade Committee for the Town of Brandon for many years. He belonged to the Brandon Chamber of Commerce with which he had been very active over the past many years.
Surviving is his wife, Grace Hosek Crue of Leicester; whom he married September 20, 1952 in Merrick, New York; two daughters, Susan M. Kalinoski of Brandon and Joann G. Kuebler of Clifton, New Jersey; two sisters, Betty Dundas and Dell B. Wood, both of Tom's River, New Jersey; two grandsons, Kevin Kuebler and Robert Kuebler and Robert Kalinoski and one granddaughter, Kathryn Kuebler.
He was predeceased by a brother George Crue.
Services were held on Friday, December 17, 1999 at the Brandon Congregational Church. The Reverend Richard White, Pastor and the Reverend Lawrence Orme of Telford, Pennsylvania, officiated. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be made in his memory to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, c/o Cairo Temple, Charlie Baker, Recorder, 51 Washington Street, Rutland, Vermont 05701.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

John A. Payne
Weybridge, Vermont

John Aldis Payne, 88, died Sunday, December 12, 1999 at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
He was born July 8, 1911, the son of Horace Dana and Flora (Lamas) Payne, on the farm, originally owned and settled by his grandfather, William Benjamin in 1786. He attended Bridport schools, and graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1928. He married Marian Shaw in 1935 in Orwell. He farmed with his brother, Wallace L. Payne until 1966, when Wallace Payne sold his share to John's eldest son, Marvin. The farm was later sold to the Russell Barrett family in 1970.
John and his wife moved to Weybridge in 1970, where he did carpentry work and was employed by Rene Poirier for 1-2 years. He then worked in maintenance and carpentry for Monument Farms Dairy in Weybridge for 10 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Congregational Church in Bridport, and served as a trustee. He was a School Director for 18 years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marian S. Payne; his daughters; Delores Dilloway and her husband David of Burlington, Cheryl Fraley and her husband Dean, of Bozeman, Montana; his sons, Marvin of Bridport, and Gary and his wife Christina of Beverly, Massachusetts and Bridport; eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Gerald in 1968.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at the Bridport Congregational Church. The Reverend Tim Franklin, Pastor, officiated. Burial followed in the family lot in Bridport Central Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Bridport Congregational Church, Bridport, Vermont 05734; the American Heart Association, 12 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495, or to the charity of one's choice.

Carol M. Fenn
Middlebury, Vermont

Carol Merritt Fenn, 77, passed away on December 20, 1999 at Helen Porter Nursing Home, after a courageous battle with a long illness. She was born May 26, 1922 at the Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vermont, the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Bingham) Merritt. She was a graduate of Bennington High School. She then went on to receive a college degree in business.
She was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Women's Army Corp. She then became an employee of the State of Vermont, where she was employed for 37 years, until her retirement from her position as Manager of the Department of Social Welfare office in Vergennes. She was also very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, and both the Middlebury Congregational Church, and in recent years, the United Methodist Church in East Middlebury, where she was influential in organizing the Sunday School Program, numerous bake sales and fundraisers. She actively enjoyed volunteering in the Robert Frost Seniors, where she was famous for her pies, baked beans and doughnuts.
Carol was knowledgeable about horticulture and used this knowledge to beautify and enhance the Fenn Family Farm. She was an avid auction participant and collector of antiques. She was an animal lover, especially fond of her menagerie of cats.
Carol was a kind. loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert E. Fenn; her step-children, Douglas Fenn and his wife Janice, David Fenn and his wife Ellen; Nancy Church and her husband Joe, and Dale Fenn and wife Carole; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 22, 1999 at the United Methodist Church in East Middlebury. Interment and committal services followed at Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury.

Elizabeth A. Pegram
Middlebury, Vermont

Elizabeth Ann Pegram died suddenly on December 20, 1999. She was the daughter of the Reverend Michael R. Barton and Gertrude (Mottram) Barton. Her father was a rector of St. Mark's Episcopal church in New Canaan, Connecticut.
She is predeceased by her husband, the Reverend Robert B. Pegram, who was rector of parishes in Western Maryland, New York and served in Rome, Italy.
She is survived by her sister Gertrude Williams of Port Morien, Nova Scotia, Canada; a son, Robert B. Pegram of Bridport, Vermont; two daughters, Anne E. Allen of Westport, Connecticut and Mary C. Paris of Pouligny-St. Martin, France; a grandson, Leandre G. Paris.
She converted to Catholicism and was a loyal member of St. Mary's parish and tried to manifest her faith in her life. She became the second Oblate of the monastery of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Westfield, Vermont.
A Requiem Mass was held on Monday, December 27, 1999 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury, Vermont. Interment and committal services followed at the Bridport Central Cemetery.
Donations in her memory can be made for food for the poor.

Roger A. Chicoine
Shoreham, Vermont

Roger Ambroise Chicoine, 53, died Friday, December 24, 1999 at his home in Shoreham.
He was born June 27, 1946 in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada, the son of Rolland and Marie-Reine (Lavalee) Chicoine. The family moved to Cornwall from Quebec in 1962, where he attended St. Mary's School in Middlebury. He worked for many years on the family farm until the early 1980's, then worked as a stonemason in the area for 10 years. He was also an active member of the Cornwall Fire Department for several years. Roger enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his sisters, Nicole Leonard and her husband Eric of Shoreham, and Monique Preaseau and her husband Edgar of South Carolina; his brothers Yves Chicoine and his wife Donna of Cornwall, and Guy and his wife Marilyn of Whiting; as well as many friends.
Roger was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Bernard Chicoine and Jacques "Jack" Chicoine.
Donations may be made in Roger's memory to the Shoreham First Response, Box 11, Shoreham, Vermont 05770.
