LUCY A. DEWEY

ST. ALBANS -- Lucy A. Dewey, 80, died at home Saturday, surrounded by family.

She was born in Waterbury on March 20, 1922, the daughter of Kathryn Anstey.

Dewey was a graduate of Johnson Teacher's College and taught in various capacities throughout Vermont for 27 years. Most recently, she taught special education at St. Albans City Elementary School, where she worked for 22 years until her retirement in 1990. She was Vermont's Outstanding Teacher in 1987.

She was a member of the Vermont Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, the Vermont Education Association, and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was an active member of St. Mary's Church, Catholic Daughters and Franklin County ARC. She also was a member of the Autonoe Club and an active participant in the Foster Grandparent Program and Vermont Special Olympics.

She was predeceased in 1988 by Sidney A. Dewey, her husband of 44 years, and in 1999 by her daughter Linda Redmond. She is survived by: three other children and their spouses, Joanne and Donald Buermann of Shelburne, Mary and Charles Underhill of South Burlington, and Douglas and Susan Dewey of Highgate; one son-in-law, James Redmond; 11 grandchildren, Jamie and Katie Redmond, Scott, Daniel, and Randall Buermann and his wife, Erin, Laura, Nicole and Tyler Underhill, and Karen, Barbara and Robert Dewey; one sister, Annie Shephard of Waterbury; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by: three brothers, George, Patrick and Richard Summers; and one sister, Agnes Mohan.

Lucy touched the hearts of many lives. All who knew her were blessed by her caring, compassion, strength, energy, unconditional love, her sense of humor, and her ability to always find the best in everyone. Her optimism and love of life were infectious to all who knew her and endeared her to the hearts of her family and her many friends. She loved playing bridge with family and friends, and she looked forward to frequent family gatherings. Most of all, she enjoyed her many hours with her children and with all her grandchildren, who always held a very special place in her heart.

The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to Lucy's many friends, neighbors, bridge club members, teachers, and special students who have helped during her illness. Also, a special thank you to the staff of Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, St. Albans. Friends may call at Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice, c/o Franklin County Home Health Association, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

CARLTON R. McENANY

SHELDON -- Carlton R. McEnany, age 90, died Friday evening, June 28, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born Aug. 14, 1911, in Sheldon, the son of the late Alfred and Lela (Herrick) McEnany.

He was a lifelong resident of Sheldon. He was employed for a short time at the Missisquoi Paper Mill in Sheldon before owning and operating a dairy farm with his wife, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Enosburg Falls.

He is survived by a son and his wife, David and Connie McEnany of Sheldon; a daughter and her husband, Linora and Barry Johnson of Morrisville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith B. McEnany, on March 6, 2002; one sister, Gertrude McEnany, and one brother, Horton McEnany.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in Sheldon Village Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

SARTO R. BRODEUR

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Sarto R. Brodeur, age 83, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2002, at Haven Health Facility in St. Albans. He was born June 21, 1919, in Granby, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Henri and Marie-Rhea (Lusignan) Brodeur.

Sarto moved to Vermont in 1945, and worked as a dairy farmer for over 25 years. He then was employed by Rochleau Motors. Following retirement, he became a handyman for his children and especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie (Tetreault) Brodeur of Enosburg Falls; three sons, Richard Brodeur of Enosburg Falls, Robert Brodeur and his wife Eleanor of Milton, and Claude Brodeur and his companion Ruth Way of Berkshire; three daughters, Henriette Emch of Richford, Denise Hoadley and her companion Hector Brown of Enosburg Falls, and Nicole Herron and her husband Gerald of Enosburg Falls; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Rita Rainville of St. Paul d'Abbosford, Quebec, Henriette Daoust of Granby, Quebec, Berthe Rollin of St. Hubert, Quebec, Laurence Archambault of St. Dominque, Quebec, and Monique Vachon of Delson, Quebec; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Pauline Brodeur; a son-in-law, Paul Hoadley; four brothers, Elisee, Joseph, Oliver and Richard Brodeur.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Reverend Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

ALAN H. WESTCOT

FRANKLIN -- Alan H. Westcot, age 77, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H. He was born April 26, 1925, in Franklin, the son of the late James B. and Clara (Chaplin) Westcot.

Alan was a life long resident of Franklin and has made his home at the Franklin Homestead since December of 2001. He was a member of the Franklin United Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during World War II and a member of the V.F.W. Robert Glidden Post and the American Legion Post 1, both of St. Albans. He was employed as the custodian at the Sheldon Springs Elementary School and then at Missisquoi Valley Union High School for several years, retiring in 1996.

Alan enjoyed dancing, working outdoors, gardening, and most of all, giving away produce from his garden. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Bishop) Westcot of Franklin; three stepchildren and their families, who Alan loved as his own, Deborah Parent, her husband Normand and their children Jo-Anne, Danielle and Michael of Highgate, Diane Deslandes, her husband Michael, and their children Angie, Tracie and Julie of Sheldon, Gordon Crofts Jr. and his children Kyle and Corey of St. Albans; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Cyr of Cape Cod, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Guy Westcot; and three sisters, Bernice Hanna, Wilma Cyr, and Frances Glidden.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Franklin Village Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held today, Saturday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

BARBARA M. HISLOP

PLYMOUTH -- Barbara M. Hislop, 83, died at Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, unexpectedly. She was born in Shrewsbury April 13, 1919, daughter of Rufus Earle and Florence (Gunyup) Earle.

She was raised and educated in Wallingford. She was a member of the last class to graduate from Black River Academy in Ludlow in 1939. She married Frederick Hislop in Ludlow on Sept. 8, 1939. He predeceased her in 1984.

She worked in the Woolen Mills in the Ludlow area and worked as one of the first woman welders for General Electric in Ludlow and later in Rutland. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star and Past President of the Rebekahs. As L.A.P.M. of Vermont, she went to Arlington Cemetery to place a wreath on the grave of the Unknown Soldier. She was on the Board of Trustee's for the Gill Home in Ludlow.

She was interested in local sports and was a scorekeeper for Little League and high school basketball and baseball. She worked at the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth as a tour guide. She enjoyed needlework and making crafts to give to others.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hopp of Plymouth; and her son, Richard Earle Hislop of Fairfax; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward R. Earle and Melvin Earle.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Gill Odd Fellows Home, 8 Gill Terrace, Ludlow, Vt. 05149, or to the Black River Little League, c/o Howard Paul, P.O. Box B, Ludlow, Vt. 05149.

In keeping with her wishes, services will be private.

Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow is in charge of the arrangements.

PAULINE A. BRODEUR

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Pauline A. Brodeur, age 56, wife of Richard V. Brodeur, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, with her family at her side.
She was born June 22, 1946, in St. Albans, the daughter of the late Simeon "Sam" and Lillian (Godin) Gervais.
Pauline was a life long resident of Enosburg Falls and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was a 1964 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School and a 1967 graduate of the former Jean Mance School of Nursing in Burlington. For 16 years, she was employed by the Enosburg Falls Graded School District as the School Nurse.
In addition to her husband, of 32 years, she is survived by her children, Michelle Shoram and husband Craig of Wayland, N.Y., Valerie Sullivan and husband Timothy of Stowe, and Andrew Brodeur of Enosburg Falls; her grandchildren, Nicholas and Joseph Shoram, and Isabelle Sullivan; a brother, and his wife, Normand and Avis Gervais of Enosburg Falls; a sister and her husband, Rita and Richard Parker of Johnson; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Paul Gervais, and her sister, Yvonne Brown.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Reverend Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held today, Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

BERNICE M. BENOIT

RICHFORD -- Bernice M. Benoit, age 99, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 28, 2002, at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.
She was born April 21, 1903, in Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of the late Peter E. and Mary (Longley) Goodhue.
She married Edward A. Benoit on Sept. 2, 1925, and in the same year, moved to Richford. He predeceased her Dec. 23, 1985. She received her education at the Convent in Frelighsburg and then was employed as a bookkeeper at the Creamery Co. in Dunham, Quebec, and had also taught school for several years. She was a devout member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford, and was the former president of St. Anne's Society and the N.C.C.W. for many years.
Senior citizens, shut-ins, people in hospitals and nursing homes, were always remembered with goodies she had made for them.
She is survived by two sons, Edward Benoit of Stanbridge Est, Quebec, and Robert Benoit of Mashpee, Mass.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Roland Goodhue.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Enosburg Falls.
Visiting hours will be held this evening, Thursday, from 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

RUTH N. (DYKE) POWELL

JEFFERSONVILLE -- Ruth Nellie (Dyke) Powell, age 86, and a lifelong resident of Jeffersonville, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Rowan Court Health & Rehabilitation Center in Barre. She was born in Jeffersonville March 7, 1916, daughter of the late Oscar W. and Nellie (Heath) Dyke.
She worked as a baker at the Windridge Bakery on Main Street in Jeffersonville over the years. She was also a member of the Order Of Eastern Star. She was married to Harold E. Powell who predeceased her April 8, 1991.
Ruth is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Rogers and her husband, Albert, of Jeffersonville; a sister, Edith Powell of Jericho; two grandchildren, Brenda Forsey and her husband Michael of Westford, Eric Hanley of Jeffersonville; four great-grandchildren, Brandi Locke of Jeffersonville, Mikayla Forsey of Westford, Jesse Hanley of Jeffersonville, Kristen Hanley of Jeffersonville; a niece, several nephews, and very dear and special friends, John and Thelda "Tillie" Warren of Cambridge.
Ruth was also predeceased by a son, Richard Alan Powell; a brother, Cleon Dyke; two sisters, Della Wetherell and Dorothy Dyke.
Visiting hours will be private and at the convenience of the family. A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at 9 a.m. in The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment followed in the family lot in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth's memory to the Jeffersonville Cemetery Association, c/o Arlie Williamson, Treas., P.O. Box 334, Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464.
Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.
