SANFORD C. PROUTY JR.

SWANTON -- Sanford Curtis Prouty Jr., 72, of Swanton, passed away Aug. 26, 2002 at Fletcher Allen Health Care after a long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Sanford Sr. and Laura Prouty.

He attended Swanton grade school and high schools graduating in the Class of 1948.

Sam, as he was known in Swanton, had many jobs and wore many hats throughout his life. One of the first jobs he held was a delivery boy at "Prouty's IGA." He also helped out cutting meat, and stocking shelves while attending high school. He also helped out at "Pop Browns" pumping gas and doing odd jobs during his school days. In the early '50s, he ran the movie projector at the Champlain Movie Theater in Swanton.

His firefighting career started with his Dad taking him to the Fire Station, starting a family tradition his son Peter continues today. At the request of Principal Lloyd E. Crane, Sam was a member of the Swanton Village Fire Department during his high school years, following in the footsteps of his father. He served 55+ years as a firefighter. He held positions of lieutenant, captain, second assistant chief, and first assistant chief over the years, and was made honorary chief in 1991.

In 1997, the honor of "Firefighter of the Year" was given to him by his peers on the department. During his 55+ years he made many contributions known and unknown to the Community. Helping out educating the school children at the schools on fire safety, giving tours of the fire stations, allowing children to explore the trucks and ask questions, performing fire drills at the schools. But his teachings of fire safety did not stop with the children. He also went out to area businesses setting up safety classes, teaching the proper use of fire extinguishers, fire drills, developing emergency response plans, safety classes at Union Carbide (in St. Albans -- now known as Eveready Battery), holding fire training classes (drills) with the younger firefighters on the department for many, many years on safety, use of equipment, pumpers, general maintenance on the trucks and around the station house. Sam was a member of every truck design committee S.V.F.D. had.

In 1951, he was one of the first drafted into the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Oceanside, Calif. in the food service division until 1953. On Nov. 21, 1952, Sam married Constance (Connie) Ellen Cline -- his high school sweetheart -- and shared the first months of their 49 years together in Oceanside.

After completing his military service in 1953, Sam and Connie built a house on Bosworth Street, which is now their "homestead." He came back home to Vermont from California and worked as a substitute rural mail carrier while working for his brother-in-law Jacque Choiniere in the garage business.

In 1962, Sam went into business with life long friend and fellow firefighter, Marcus Bostwick Sr. at "Sam and Marc's Service Station" until 1966, when he began his career at Eveready Battery Company, where he worked for 23 years until his illness did not allow him to work any longer, and he retired in February 1990. While at Eveready, he held positions on the production line, as shift supervisor and was instrumental in developing the "first response team" required now by the Federal Safety laws.

For 30 years, Sam was the custodian of the First Congregational Church in Swanton until 1996, when his health no longer allowed him to continue. He also served as a trustee and deacon for many years. Other civic contributions were being a Red Cross blood donor, donating gallons of his blood to save the lives of others. He was a past president of the Men's Club, a Justice of the Peace from 1965-1967, served on the Board of Civil Authority, member of the Swanton Chamber of Commerce, a Mason since 1952, and assistant scout master with the Boy Scouts.

Most of all, Sam's family and friends will remember him as being devoted to his family, S.V.F.D., the community and enjoying camping, fishing and woodworking.

Sam is survived by his wife, Constance Ellen Prouty of Swanton; his children, Linda Prouty Gadouas and husband Gary of Swanton, Donna Prouty Brosseau, husband Philip and son Christopher of Highgate, Peter Prouty, his wife Anita (Beliveau) and son Connor of Swanton; his grandchildren, Sabrina and Brian St. Pierre of Swanton. He leaves his brother William Prouty of South Burlington; sisters, Nancy Sheldon, Francis Choiniere, Laura Ann Mott and husband Robert, all of Swanton; several nieces and nephews and "Grampies Girls."

Sam was predeceased by an infant daughter in 1965.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. (for reasons of space) from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend, pastor of the Highgate United Methodist Church and the Reverend Robert Hullstrung, pastor of the West Swanton United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Prouty Family lot in Riverside Cemetery.
