MATTHEW CHARLES IVES

HIGHGATE -- Matthew Charles (Buddy) Ives, 15, of Highgate, suffered a senseless death on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, when the ATV he was riding struck a cable that was chained between two trees on a logging road in a corn field, across the street from his Lamkin Street home.

He was born at the Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington on May 21, 1987, and would have been a sophomore at Missisquoi Valley Union High School.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Ralph Germain on May 25, 1992, and Nancy Germain on Nov. 25, 1995.

He is survived by his parents, Danny and Anne (Germain) Ives, of Highgate Center. He also leaves behind "Sissy", Melissa Ives, his little sister. In addition, he leaves several aunts, uncles and two special aunts, Joanne Pinsonneault, of St. Albans, and Janice Audette, of Williston. He also leaves his paternal grandparents, Sylvia and Charles Ives, of Swanton; his dog, Poco, and cat, Sandy.

Matthew had many friends that he considered to be his "best friends" and could not choose between a certain five: Justin Pilbin, Kyle Choiniere, Mike Fontaine, Adam Hoague and Josh Cross. The boys grew up together and, through the years, proved to be inseparable. A unique bond of six boys helping one another grow and just enjoyed spending carefree time together. Matt loved sports from an early age and participated in the following activities: golfing, baseball, fishing, basketball, snowboarding, soccer, hunting, BMX bike riding, hanging out with Dad, special times with Mom to talk and share dreams and disappointments, after everyone else had gone to bed.

He was an avid collector of CDs, baseball and hockey cards, showcase knives and held onto popular toys from childhood that he believed would be collector's items some day. Matthew had recently achieved his learner's permit and was proud of this accomplishment.

At a young age, Matt learned a lesson that some adults never learn. He had to work hard in life to get what he wanted. For the past two summers, he worked two jobs -- most recently at McDonald's and Highgate Elementary School -- to achieve the high goals he set for himself, including buying the 2003 Suzuki Z400 ATV.

He was a level-headed "little man" whose maturity exceeded his years and took safety precautions with whatever he did, earning the respect and trust from his parents that he deserved.

Matt was proud of his new den and all of his sporting awards and trophies that he meticulously displayed on the fireplace mantle for all to see.

Matt appreciated and took care of everything he had and did not take anything for granted. He cherished each day and looked forward to each tomorrow.

His sense of humor touched all around him, Matt had a way of making you laugh when you least expected it. He was a quiet, gentle and loving presence with a charming smile that won over everyone's heart.

Matt was an outstanding role model and was admired by his younger cousins, especially 7-year-old Kyle Conner, who wants to grow up to be like Matt.

Matt will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends. If we had a few more Matt Iveses, the world would be a much better place, for those who know him are truly blessed.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Interment will follow in the Ives' family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Highgate Center. Friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002.

Gifts in Matt's memory may be made to his parents, Danny and Anne Ives, P.O. Box 93, 1393 Lamkin St., Highgate Center, Vt. 05459.
