ELAINE JOYCE BILODEAU

GEORGIA - Mrs. Elaine Joyce Bilodeau, age 62, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at her home in Georgia, surrounded by her loved ones, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Ellie was born in St. Albans, March 16, 1940, daughter of the late Felix and Marion (Sorrettd) LaPan. She was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and graduated in 1958 from Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans.

She attended Jeanne Mance School of Nursing. Ellie married George Bilodeau, Nov. 19, 1960. Ellie and George raised a close-knit family, living briefly in St. Albans, Barre, Milton and Hyde Park before settling in Georgia, where they have resided since 1976.

Ellie raised her kids at home until she joined the workforce. She started working as a paraprofessional at Georgia Elementary School in 1982. For the next 18 years, she imparted her love of books to many children through the reading program at school. To Ellie, work was more than a job, it was an opportunity to serve, and she touched the lives of both her students and her co-workers, profoundly. At the time of her retirement, in 2000, Ellie was honored as the school's Outstanding Paraeducator, and the award was then named for her.

Ellie was an avid gardener, tenacious crossword puzzle finisher, birdwatcher, Cree-Mee connoisseur, and loved to go for rides in the country. She was never without a book to read, and if you needed one, she had just the volume (probably at home in her personal library). A charter member of the crack-of-dawn club, you could always find her with a quiet cup of coffee, enjoying the sunrise. Early coffee provided a reprieve from the duties of parenting seven children. Without question, family was at the core of her existence -- whether it was her extended family, lifelong friends, or her husband and children.

She oversaw many birthdays, barbecues, graduations and celebrations with love and caring. Possessing a powerful but quiet inner strength, Ellie drew people to her, and then provided the ear, the shoulder, or the hand to hold with an uncanny ability to know what was needed.

She will be sorely missed by her husband of 42 years, George, her children and their spouses, Mary Fiorini of Georgia, Brian and his finacee Jacqueline of St. Albans, Matthew and Karen of Georgia, Richard of Jay, Katharine, Anthony, and Suzanne Bilodeau, all of St. Albans.

She is also survived by a brother, Wayne LaPan and his wife Diane of St. Albans, and nine grandchildren, Joseph and Jordan Fiorini, Ashley, Wyatt, Lucas, Stephanie, Christopher, Brian and Sarah Bilodeau, a foster grandchild Jessica, many aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, other family and lifelong friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Ascension Church, in Georgia, with Father Francis Connors officiating. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Internment will follow in the Bilodeau family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the Ellie Bilodeau Memorial Fund, in care of Peoples Trust Co. 25 Kingman St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
