REVEREND ROGER WARREN FitzGERALD

PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- Reverend Roger Warren FitzGerald of Palm Harbor, Fla., died one month shy of 102 years on Monday, June 24, 2002, at St. Mark's Health Care Center.

Born in Charlestown, Mass. on July 18, 1900, he attended Montpelier Seminary becoming a full member of the Vermont/Troy Conference in 1929.

Roger served Vermont churches in Underhill and Underhill Center, West Berkshire Circuit, Pittsfield, Stockbridge and Gaysville, Fairfax and Binghamville, Bradford and Waits River, Lyndonville and East Lyndon.

In 1951, he was appointed to New York State charges in North Chatham, Chatham Center and Niverville, Warrensburg, Esperance and Sloansville, Ausable Forks and Clintonville.

In 1966, he retired to Milton, although he continued to minister to other churches on a temporary basis. Roger and Villa, who died in 1989, spent winter vacations in Florida for many years, finally staying in St. Petersburg all year, Roger moved to Palm Harbor, Fla. in 2001.

Reverend FitzGerald was very active in working with youth groups and was a dedicated worker at Missisquoi Campground in Sheldon. He was instrumental in bringing Ernest Johnson of Dorchester, Mass., a student of Tenor Roland Hayes, to Vermont parishes and schools where he brought entertainment and enlightenment of Negro spirituals properly sung and interpreted.

He was a member of the Vermont Club of St. Petersburg and the "251" Club of Vermont.

He was predeceased by his wife, Villa Victoria; and two sons, Roger Jr. of South Hampton, N.H., and John Wesley of Milton.

Survivors include his daughter, Lois Arnold of North Chatham, N.Y.; and a son, Walter Johnson and his wife Shirley of Safety Harbor; a sister, Stella Twigg of Scituate, Mass.; two daughters-in-law, Sally K. of South Hampton, N.H., and Jane M. of Milton; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 17, at the United Church of Fairfax, followed by a time of fellowship to greet one another.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Church of Fairfax, 44 Sweet Slatterly Rd., Fairfield, Vt. 05448, or to a charity of your choice in his name.

RITA B. "MAC" FOSTER

SWANTON -- Rita B. Foster, 85, a life long resident of this area, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Holiday House Nursing Facility following a short illness. She was born in Swanton, on Oct. 24, 1916, the daughter of the late Herman and Mina (Erwin) Foster.

Mac was a member of the Swanton Historical Society.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Warren S. Paradee of Sheldon; a nephew, Wynn Paradee and his wife, Pauline of Sheldon; a niece, Wendy Cota of Sheldon; two grand-nieces, Natalie and Amber Paradee; and two grand-nephews, Casey and Chase Cota all of Sheldon; a half niece, June Abell of St. Albans; and good friend, Beverly Dennis of Rutland. She was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Paradee and Shirley Foster; three brothers, Emerson H. Foster, Gardner W. Foster and Herman Foster, Jr.; a half sister, Alberta Ovitt; and a grand-nephew, Shane Cota.

Her family would like to thank Lynne Marie Villareal of the Home Health Agency for her assistance with Mac while she was at home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

GLADYS M. GAUDREAU

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Gladys M. Gaudreau, age 78, died Wednesday afternoon, July 31, 2002, in Haven Health Care Center, where she resided for the past year. She was born in St. Albans Sept. 4, 1923, daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Corey) Comstock. Feb. 15, 1940, she married Euclide "Clyde" Gaudreau. Mr. Gaudreau died Jan. 24, 1974.

Gladys was employed in dietary at Kerbs Memorial Hospital for several years. She was very active with the former Mothers Club at Holy Angels Church, a member and past president of the Ladies of St. Anne, a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit 758, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1 # 758 and very proud to be associated with the Foster Grandparents Program for many years.

Her survivors include her children and their spouses, Nancy and Albert Houle of St. Albans, Lorraine Moye of St. Albans, Leopold and Mary Jane Gaudreau of Fairfax; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice, and her husband Edward Staskauskas of Waterbury, Conn.; sister-in-law, Betty Comstock of Hartford, Conn.; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde; children Frank, Francis and Gloria; sister Myrtle Mayo; and brothers John, Arthur, Corey, Roger and Edward Comstock, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will follow in the Gaudreau family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Masses or the Foster Grandparents Program, in care of Mary Firkey, 158 South Main St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

GLORIA F. "DODY" (LaFOUNTAIN) ALLARD

BELVIDERE -- Gloria Frances "Dody" (LaFountain) Allard, age 76, passed away Friday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2002, at her home with her loving family by her side. She was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Belvidere, daughter of Lena "Lea" Mae (Miller) LaFountain and the late Guy LaFountain.

She married Frederick Everett Allard on Oct. 10, 1970, in the Second Congregational Church of Jeffersonville. Gloria was a life long resident of Belvidere giving back to the community she so loved by volunteering her time and talents at every opportunity. As an active member of the Belvidere Community Church, she served as Deacon, President and Treasurer. In 1952, she joined the Belvidere Cemetery Association serving as past President, Director and Treasurer. Gloria also served as a ballot clerk for many years and was a Belvidere Community Club member since 1958. She was also a past member of the American Legion Mt. Mansfield Post #35.

Gloria was a Belvidere news reporter for News & Citizen for over 18 years. She will be affectionately remembered as the "popcorn girl" at Belvidere's Old Home Day where she also generously donated her time unconditionally, organizing the event in order to help others. In 2002 Gloria and Fred were honored with the well deserved title of Grand Marshalls of the Old Home Day parade. She enjoyed her collection and display of ducks in her home. She loved to write beautiful poetry about her family and Christmas, her favorite holiday season. Gloria will be greatly missed by her many family and friends whose lives she had graciously touched in her own special way.

She is survived by her husband, Frederick E. Allard of Belvidere; her mother Lena "Lea" Alexander of Morrisville; two sons, Tom Barry of Waterville, Bill Barry and his wife Barb of Belvidere; two half-brothers, Brenton LaFountain and his wife Janice and their family of Waterville, Dereck LaFountain and his wife Edna and their family of Waterville; two half-sisters, Kay Ingalls and her husband Christy of Eden, Lynne Duffy of Belvidere; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Frank Allard and his wife Louella of Island Pond; a sister-in-law, Perry Perce of California; several nieces, nephews; a special cousin, Beverly Eldred of Belvidere; a special friend, Ginny Thompson of Fayette, Missouri; and her favorite cat, "Tommy Kat" and dog "Tammy." She was also predeceased by a son, Michael Barry, in September, 1950.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at the Belvidere Community Church on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend John Nutting officiating. Inurnment will follow in the family lot in Belvidere Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Gloria's memory to Belivdere Cemetery Association, c/o Fred Allard, 34 Lonesome Dove Lane, Belvidere, Vt. 05442.

Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

HELEN MILLER DRISCOLL

ST. ALBANS/BRADENTON, Fla. -- Helen Miller Driscoll, 97, a lifelong St. Albans resident, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Fla. She was born in St. Albans on June 1, 1905, the daughter of the late Thomas D. and Clara (Hoyt) Miller. Helen was married to William J. Driscoll, who predeceased her on Sept. 20, 1983.

She was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employee's Union and the Friendship Circle of the Kings Daughters.

Helen is survived by nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Newell S. Miller in 1971 and Alden H. Miller in 1984.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Dennis E. Hayward officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

DOROTHY M. MARTELL

MILTON -- Dorothy M. Martell, 71, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston after a long illness. Dot was born in Fletcher on Oct. 1, 1930, the daughter of William and Hilda (Metevier) Pilbin.

On Jan. 12, 1950, Dorothy married Wilfred C. Martell Jr. in St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Albans. They had lived in Milton since 1958. Dot dispatched for the Milton Fire Department and Rescue Squad for over 15 years, along with operating Dot's Barber Shop. Prior to opening her barber shop, Dorothy worked for Union Carbide in St. Albans for over 18 years.

Mrs. Martell is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Cherrier and her husband Steven of Winooski; her son, Wilfred C. Martell III of Milton; by her grandchildren, Eric and his wife Jessica, and Michael Loesch, Rachel Martel, Serenity Weatherwax and her husband Joby and Isaiah and Jude Martell; her great-grandchildren, Dustin, Tyler, Ciera, Christian, Heaven Leigh and Jada Loesch, and Sera LaBounty. She is also survived by her brother, Alvin Pilbin and his wife Marie of St. Albans; her sister, Harriet Jarvis of St. Albans; her brother-in-law, Leonard Martell of Florida; her sister-in-laws, Dot Wilson and Velma Porter of Texas, and Doris Martell of Milton; and by 30 nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred C. Martell Jr. on April 20, 1999.

A dedication to Dorothy's life with memories shared will be held this morning, Monday, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, prior to the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Friends called on the family Sunday, Sept. 29, from 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home with prayers offered by Father John Feltz at 8:45 p.m. Sunday evening.

BRIAN SIMMONS COYNE

ENOSBURG FALLS/WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Brian Simmons Coyne, age 62, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. He was born Dec. 27, 1939, in Enosburg Falls, moving to Connecticut in 1997, and resided at Loomis Drive Apartments in West Hartford for the past two years and will be greatly missed by his staff and friends there.

He was a very integral part of his small town in Vermont, with many acquaintances and good friends who included him in various activities that comprise life in a small town. He was particularly involved in the local volunteer fire department and was especially befriended by that group.

Residence in Connecticut brought him another group of friends. He was a member of FAVARH and worked at AC Petersens Restaurant and most recently for Community Enterprises in Windsor.

He is survived by a brother and his wife, Michael and Vonnie Coyne of Bluffton, S.C.; two sisters and their husband, Sheila Rae and Charles Vendetti of Simsbury, Conn., and Cindy and Larry Mikelsen of Port Orchard, Wash.; two aunts, Evelyn Clark of Stowe and Fern Perley of Enosburg Falls; nine nieces and nephews; 12 grand-nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Tina Ditucci of Simsbury, Conn.; several cousins, and a host of lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, 2002, at 10 o'clock at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Reverend Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Montgomery Center Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

ANNE MARIE GIROUX CANFIELD

BEAUFORT, S.C. -- Anne Marie Giroux Canfield, 61, widow of Frederick G. Canfield, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The family received friends Sunday, from 6-8 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held today, Monday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., at Anderson Funeral Home, followed by burial in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Mrs. Canfield was born Oct. 21, 1940, in St. Albans, to the late Raoul Giroux and Georgianna Richards Giroux. She retired as the manager of recruit sales at Parris Island Recruit Depot and was of the Catholic Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Canfield-Barr of Beaufort; three sons, Frederick Canfield, Ricky Canfield, and Randy Canfield, all of Beaufort; two sisters, Helen Giroux of St. Albans and Jeanne Giroux-Miller of Swanton; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Anderson Funeral Home in Beaufort, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.
