NANCY LOUISA (HURLBUT) LANE

MONKTON -- Nancy Louisa (Hurlbut) Lane, 69, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 19, 2002, at her home in Monkton, surrounded by her loving family. Nancy was born in Burlington on Dec. 13, 1932, the daughter of Hiram W. and Gladys (Beaman) Hurlbut.

Nancy was a graduate of the Cathedral High School, Class of 1950, and earned a degree in Engineering from Johnson State College.

She married Leonard Lane in Burlington on Dec. 26, 1954.

Nancy had retired from the Digital Equipment Corp and was most recently employed by the Town of Charlotte as Recording Secretary for the Charlotte Zoning Planning Commission and was the Secretary for the Charlotte Sportsman's Club. Her bright smile and positive outlook on life had been a guiding light for her family and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her Leonard Sr., Nancy is survived by her children, Christina Lane Lesperance and her husband David of Milton, Gregory Lane and his wife Sandra of Groton, Conn., Leonard Lane Jr. of Waterford, Conn., Susan Lane Gergen of Groton, Conn., and Gail Tulisiak of Costa Mesa, Calif. Nancy is also survived by 12 grandchildren; her brothers, Francis Hurlbut of Park Forest, Ill., Patrick Hurlbut of Warner Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia, Alba John Hurlbut of Dayton, Ohio, Richard Hurlbut of Yama, Arizona, Dennis Hurlbut of Chula Vista, Calif., and Daniel Hurlbut of Rutland; by her sister, Rosemary Overson of San Diego, Calif.; and by several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Hurlbut.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton by the Reverend Dennis Hayward. Friends may call on the family on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charlotte Sportsman's Alliance, in care of Rose-Ann Lombard, 3891 Greenbush Road, Charlotte, Vt. 05445, or by calling Richard Greene at 1-802-425-3459.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

VELMA M. MORRIS

SWANTON -- Mrs. Velma M. Morris, 98, a longtime Swanton resident, died Sunday evening, Nov. 17, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Mrs. Morris and her family began spending the summers in the Swanton area in 1958 and moved here on a permanent basis in 1972. She had been a resident of 89A Grand Avenue for over 26 years.

She had been an active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church where a plaque honors her founding of the parish Thrift Shop. She more recently attended the New Wine Christian Fellowship Church. Mrs. Morris was a charter member of the Swanton Historical Society and a longtime member of the Swanton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Kings Daughters and Sons.

She was born in Moores Town, N.J., Nov. 26, 1903, the daughter of the late Dennis and Minnie (Clark) Woolever. She attended high school in New Jersey and attended Columbia University majoring in Journalism. In earlier years she was the associate editor of the magazine Ceramic Age. On Oct. 10, 1923, she married Russell Morris who predeceased her April 21, 1975.

Mrs. Morris leaves her son, Robert Morris and his wife Vivian of Metuchen, N.J.; a son-in-law Robert Henshaw of St. Petersburg, Fla.; as well as her very dear friend and caregiver, Mary S. Babcock of Swanton. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Lynn Murray of Swanton and Laurie Aguilera of Muskegon, Mich.; a grandson, Kevin Morris of Metuchen, N.J.; and three great-granddaughters, Janice Morris, Linda Morris and Heather Garrity, all of Orange Park, Fla.; and many, many friends.

Mrs. Morris's daughter, Kathryn Henshaw, predeceased her in 1996.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at 1 p.m. from The New Wine Christian Fellowship, (formerly The First Congregational Church), Academy Street in Swanton Village. The pastor, the Reverend Daniel Breuckner will officiate. Interment will take place in the Morris family lot in Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen, N.J. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, from 4 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Mrs. Morris's memory may be made to The New Wine Christian Fellowship Restoration Fund, in care of The Reverend Daniel Brueckner, 12 Farrar Street, Swanton, Vt. 05488.

BRUCE M. "RED" ELMORE

SOUTH BURLINGTON -- Bruce M. "Red" Elmore, 72 of South Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Akron, N.Y. on Jan. 28, 1930, the son of the late Earle B. and Marjory (Bennett) Elmore.

Red was the owner of Redi-Bilt Construction Company for many years. He was well known for his television ads "Out of towners may call collect."

Red served his country for a brief time in the U.S. Navy. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. 916 and was a past Exalted Ruler. He was a mason and longtime member of Whiteface Mountain Lodge 0709 in Saranac Lake, N.Y., and was a past Potentate of the Cairo Shriners. He was especially proud of being one of the original founders of the Greater Burlington Cellar Savers and had served as Chief.

Red was an avid UVM sports fan and a longtime supporter of its hockey and woman's basketball programs. Also among his many interests were golf and traveling in his motor home.

Red is survived by his loving wife, Nina of South Burlington; his seven children, Bruce E. and his wife Diane of Shelburne, Cecil A. and his wife Jackie of Goose Creek, S.C., Walter C. and his wife Ann-Marie of Pierre Fond, Quebec, Rhonda D. Simays of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Patrice D. Brotherton and her husband Matthew of Clinton, Ill., D. Michele Ioannou and her husband Leo of Williston, and D. Maureen Cerreta and her husband, The Reverend Joseph of New Port Richey, Fla.; a step-son, Aaron Lumbra and his wife Peggy of Georgia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Walter B. Elmore and his friend Ann Houghton of Colchester; his sister, Marjory Clark and her husband Clinton of Mt. Upton, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Daniels of Greene, N.Y.

Red was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was well respected by the community he lived and worked in and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. A private memorial service will be held Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals, 25 Washington Street, Rutland, Vt. 05701.

WESLEY B. SPAULDING

FAIRFAX -- Wesley Byron Spaulding, age 86, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Fletcher, on Feb. 26, 1916, son of the late Emerson and Fluella (Wetherbee) Spaulding.

He graduated from BFA-Fairfax, class of 1934. Wesley married the former Ardelle Corse on June 10, 1940, in Fletcher. As a lifelong resident of the area, he was active in dairy farming in Fletcher for over 44 years, operating his own farm and maple sugaring operation with over 2000 taps. He served his community well as a Justice of the Peace over the years. Wesley was a member of the Binghamville United Church and a past member of the ACP, Farm Bureau, and Fletcher Grange #473 where he had presided as a past Grange Master. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ardelle (Corse) Spaulding of Fairfax; a son, John Spaulding and Sue McGregor of Fletcher; a daughter, Rhoda and her husband Stephen Desmarais of Holden, Mass.; a sister, Izola Blaisdell and her husband Willard of Enosburg Falls; a grandson, Michael Spaulding and Cheryl Veren of Fletcher; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Marion Spaulding of Fletcher and Catherine Corse of Fletcher. He was also predeceased by an infant son; two brothers; three sisters; a grandson, Dale; and a granddaughter, Sheri.

Visiting hours will be private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Binghamville United Methodist Church, Fletcher. Interment will follow in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery, Fletcher.

Wesley and his family greatly appreciated the help and comfort lovingly administered in his last days by the volunteers and staff of Franklin County Home Health and Hospice and his neighbors, relatives and friends.

Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

GARY I. O'CONNELL

ST. ALBANS -- Gary I. O'Connell, 64, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning, Nov. 18, 2002. He had been shoveling snow in his driveway. He was born in East Fairfield, Feb. 6, 1938, the son of Grace (Stone) O'Connell and the late Faye O'Connell.

Gary was a retired Sales Representative for Hunt Wesson Foods. He graduated from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield in 1955 and served his country in the Army from 1955 to 1958. On Sept. 17, 1960, he married Pamela McGowan in Bakersfield. They owned and operated the Cornerstone Restaurant in St. Albans from 1987 to 1994. He was a member of St. Albans Lodge #1566, BPOE and the Champlain Country Club.

Gary's greatest joy was his family. He was always there to take care of all of us, whatever our needs. A lover of his schedule, you could set your watch by his daily activities. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid golfer. He enjoyed working in his garden, mowing with his tractor, cooking and vacationing, especially in Florida. His love, support and care will be dearly missed by all.

In addition to his wife of 42 years, Pam, he is survived by his mother, Grace O'Connell of Fairfield; his mother-in-law, Jeanette McGowan of Bakersfield; his son, Jeffrey O'Connell and his wife, Carole, of St. Albans; daughters, Keeli Metz and her husband, Dale, of Georgia and Jill Boomhover and her husband, Vernon of St. Albans; eight grandchildren, Taylor and Olivia O'Connell, Abbigail and Benjamin Boomhover, and Robert, Nicole, Marriah and Gabrielle Metz. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters and their spouses, Donna and Donald Bower of Temple, Texas, Philip and Heidrun O'Connell of Palm Harbor, Fla., David and Connie O'Connell of St. Albans, Gloria and Gary Geddes of East Fairfield and Richard and Martha O'Connell of St. Albans, a sister-in-law, Joanne and Raymond Joyal of Bakersfield; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Faye O'Connell; a brother, Thomas O'Connell; and his father-in-law, Carl McGowan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

BARBARA J. WRIGHT

RICHFORD -- Barbara J. Wright, age 62, died Monday morning, Nov. 18, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born Jan. 12, 1940, in Bakersfield, the daughter of the late Clarence and Inez (King) Benway.

She was a resident of Richford most of her life and a member of All Saints Catholic Church. Barbara was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts. She also loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Wright of Brattleboro; two sons, James Ryea Jr. of Richford and Andrew Ryea and his wife Brenda of Milton; two daughters and their husbands, Melanie and Richard Turner of Fairfax, and Victoria and Michael Harriman of Richford; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Carolyn Brown of East Richford. She was predeceased by her first husband, James Ryea in 1970; and a brother, Lincoln Gokey in 1985.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be held in the spring in St. Georges Cemetery in Bakersfield.

Friends and relatives may call on the family Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

MURIEL E. BRITCH

SOUTH ALBANY/BERKSHIRE -- Muriel E. Britch, age 79, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at her daughter's home in South Albany. She was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Burlington, the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice (Hawkins) Britch.

After attending grade school in Berkshire, she worked as a nanny. During World War II she lived in Hartford, Conn., working at Hamilton Standard Propeller. After the war, she returned to Berkshire and married Delwin Britch on Sept. 14, 1946, she enjoyed being a homemaker, doing needlework and taking care of her cats. After Delwin passed away in 1998, she made her home with her daughter Cathy in South Albany.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Paul Messier of South Albany; a grandson, Guy Kittell and his children, Blaine and Ashley, all of Richford; a granddaughter and her husband, Jessica and Matthew Boone and their children, Juliette and Ian, all of Groton, Conn. She also leaves her caregiver and special friend, Betty Urie. Muriel was able to stay at home due to the Hospice Team of Orleans County. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Amos Britch.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at 11 o'clock at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford, with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating.

Friends and relatives may call on the family on Saturday from 10 until the hour of the funeral at the funeral home.

JASON CURTIS HAKEY

ALBURG -- Jason Curtis Hakey, 21, a resident of Winters Lane in Alburg Village went to be with his father in Heaven on Friday evening, Nov. 15, 2002, following a tragic automobile accident in Alburg.

Jason was born in St. Albans, Oct. 24, 1981, the son of Donald and Cynthia (Hilliker) Hakey. He attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School where he was active in Junior Varsity and Varsity Baseball. He graduated with the Class of 1999.

At the time of his death Jason was employed by Poquette Construction of Alburg and had just recently returned from the state of North Carolina where he also worked construction for about a year. During high school and for a time after he had been employed by Wrights Cut & Clean of Alburg. Jason was a member of the Union Bible Church in Alburg Village and will always be remembered for his love of dirt biking.

In addition to his parents, Donald and Cindy Hakey of Alburg Jason leaves his brother George Hakey of Alburg and his loving girlfriend, Katherine Berube of Isle La Motte, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, George and Ella (Root) Hakey and maternal grandparents, Robert and Annamae (Curtis) Hilliker.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Union Bible Church, Main Street, Alburg Village, with the pastor Dr. John C. Kehoe officiating. Interment will follow in Bush Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Thursday evening, Nov. 21, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gifts in Jason's memory may be made to Alburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 223, Alburg, Vt. 05440.

BEATRICE N. SULLIVAN

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Beatrice N. Sullivan, age 81, died Friday evening, Nov. 15, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in Worchester, Mass. Sept. 24, 1921, daughter of the late Frank and Nora (Ford) Mosher.

She married Phillip Sullivan Nov. 6, 1939. He died July 3, 1986.

Beatrice loved country music, especially Elvis, her flower gardens and cooking. She also enjoyed sewing, Sunday rides, and eating out.

She and her family are grateful for the care and compassion shown by the Franklin County Home Health girls, especially Kim and Linda and the kindnesses shown by Kathy and Gail and the staff of Dr. Zelazo's office.

She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis and her husband Thomas Lucier of Swanton and Karen Sullivan of St. Albans; her grandsons, Brian Lucier, Scott Lucier and his companion Bonnie Lockerby and her daughter Kellsie Lockerby; her sisters-in-law, Kathleen and Robert Smith, Geraldine and Clement LaFlam, Lorraine Sullivan and Jean Sullivan; her special niece, Hazel Bronza of Worchester, Mass.; and several other nieces and nephews, and special friends, Frank and Doris Hubbard of St. Albans.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 this evening (Monday). Interment will be in the Sullivan family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or Vermont Diabetes Association, 77 Hedgeman Ave., Colchester, Vt. 05446.
