GEORGE ALBERT MARTIN

SWANTON -- George Albert Martin, 71, a resident of the Swanton community since 1973, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 28, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Woodsville, N.H., Jan. 23, 1931, the son of the late Charles Henry and Alice (Currier) Martin. Raised in Wells River, Vermont he graduated from the Wells River High School with the Class of 1949 and later attended the University of Vermont. On June 11, 1955, he married the former Joan "Jody" Crown, who survives him.

George was employed as a supervisor by the former New England Telephone Company retiring in 1991 after twenty-two years of service. He was active in numerous Masonic Bodies including the Ethan Allen Lodge #72 F. & A.M. of Essex Jct., Mount Sinai Shriners # 3 of Montpelier and The York Rite of Free Masonry of Vermont. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Swanton Chapter # 11 and served as Past Worthy Patron and Past District Deputy Grand Patron. George played drums in all of the Franklin County Town Bands as well as Mount Sinai Shriners Band and The Sterling Weed Band. He served as a member of the Missisquoi Valley Union High School Boosters Club and was past president of the Hardack Ski Area Association in St. Albans. He was a parishioner of the West Swanton United Methodist Church. Earlier George and Jody lived 15 years in Williston and were members of the Williston Federated Church.

He served his country in the United States Air Force and was a member of the Sewart Air Force Base Band.

In addition to his wife Jody of Swanton, George leaves a son, Curtis Martin and his wife Alisa of Berkshire; two daughters, Cyndi Listenik and her husband Hank of Jericho and Carrie LaRocque and her husband Danny of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Jenna and Trevor Martin of Berkshire, Heather and Tyler Listenik of Jericho and Miranda and Zachary LaRocque of Cambridge. Also surviving are two brother-in-laws, John Crown of Old Lyme, N.H., Madison Parker of Orem, Utah; and a sister-in-law, Ann Malik of Hudson, N.H.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the Memorial United Methodist Church, Grand Avenue, Swanton. Spring Interment will take place in the Martin family lot in the North Monroe Cemetery in Monroe, N.H. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Members of Seventy-Six Lodge # 14 F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic Ritualistic Service at 7:30 p.m.

Gifts in George's memory may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association Information and Referral Center, in care of, Fletcher Allen Health Care, 111 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, Vt. 05401.

MAURICE C. BADGER

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Maurice C. Badger, 88, a longtime resident of this area, passed away early Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Vermont Veterans' Home in Bennington, following a long illness. He was born in Danville, Vt. on May 10, 1914, the son of the late Edward and Eva (Clark) Badger. He was married to the former Virginia Brennan, who predeceased him in 1973.

Maurice, along with Burt Paquin, founded the Badger & Paquin Hudson automobile dealership in 1947. He worked as parts manager at Paquin Motors for many years, as well as for dealerships in Burlington and Glens Falls, NY. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Technical Sergeant with the 1107th Army Air Force Base Unit from 1942 to 1945 in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was a member of the Vermont Air National Guard from 1946 to 1951, serving as a Staff Sergeant with the 134th Fighter Squadron. He served for many years as Adjutant of American Legion, Green Mountain Post #1, and was an active member of Robert E. Glidden Post #758, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

An ardent sports enthusiast, Maurice advocated athletic programs for young people and coached youth baseball in St. Albans.

Survivors include two sons and their wives; Timothy and Elise (Mayo) Badger of South Glens Falls, N.Y. and Gary and Maureen (Kennedy) Badger of Georgia, Vt.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Collin Badger of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; a brother-in-law; John Welch of Georgia, Vt.; a sister-in-law; Mildred Yablonicky of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister-in-law and her husband; Lucille and Elmer Baldwin of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Virginia, he was predeceased by a brother, Perley Badger in 1975; and a dear friend, Diana Piotte of Dunham, PQ.

In accordance with Maurice's wishes, services will be private and at the convenience of his family.

Gifts in his memory may be made to either the Town of Georgia Recreation Dept, c/o Steve Lefebvre, 128 Robin Lane, Georgia, Vt. 05468, or Adirondack Youth Hockey Association, PO Box 940, Glens Falls, N.Y. 12801.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

WILLIAM RAY LAROCHE

RICHFORD -- William Ray Laroche, age 81, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Haven Health Center in St. Albans. He was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Franklin, the son of the late Peter P. and Sara Mae (Bolio) Laroche.

He was a resident of Richford most of his life, where he owned and operated a beef farm for many years, retiring in the late 1970s. As a child, he taught himself to play the fiddle by ear. He entertained all his life, playing for many bands, including Joe Mayo's Band, which he played at dances in the area, appeared on Channel 3, and could be heard on the radio station, WWSR. When he retired, he also played at nursing homes in St. Albans, including Redstone Villa, Holiday House, and Verdelle Village. When he could no longer play the fiddle, due to his heart condition, he taught himself to play the Banjo.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. (Wetherby) Laroche, residing at Haven Health Center in St. Albans. They were married April 2, 1949. He is also survived by one daughter and her husband, Darlene and Walter Gagnon of Richford; a granddaughter, Crystal (Martel) Stone and her husband Jason of Enosburg Falls; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, W. Dale Laroche; a brother, Clesson Laroche; and a sister, Wilma Eldred.

Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held today, Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will be next spring in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

ELLARETA O. WETHERBY

RICHFORD -- Ellareta O. Wetherby, age 77, died Thursday morning, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Richford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Lydia (Martin) Pollander.

She was a life long resident of Richford and was employed at Sweat-Comings for several years on the cleaning staff and then worked as a house cleaner in the area. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 12 of Richford.

She is survived by a son, Robert Wetherby of Richford; four daughters, Winnie Thompson of Enosburg Falls, Lydia Lawyer, Anne Loiselle and Robin Guyette, all of Richford; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Pollander and his wife Kathleen of Bradford, and Wilfred Pollander of Burlington; three sisters, Gladys Lumbra of Franklin, Eloise Demar of Enosburg Falls, and Reba Ryea of Richford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Wetherby; a daughter, Tayna Maskell; four sisters, Hilda Chaplin, Jessie Young, Louise Owens, and Glendora Birch; two brothers, Frederick and Freeman Pollander.

In keeping with Reta's wishes, there will be NO services this winter. A date for graveside service will be announced next spring. There will be no visiting hours.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Richford Fire Department, Main Street, Richford, Vt. 05476. Spears Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

STEPHEN ANDREW JOHNSTON

ST. ALBANS -- Funeral services for Stephen Andrew Johnston, who passed away on Dec. 20, 2002, were held on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with family friend, Everest Aiken, officiating. Music was provided by Mary Jo Gillilan and a special solo, "One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus" was sung by Gary Bates. Stephen's brother, Nathan, offered the eulogy and many in attendance shared remembrances of Stephen.

Attending were representatives of The Yellow Cab Company of Burlington, The Tyler Place of Highgate Springs, The St. Albans City and Town Fire Departments and a Guard of Honor by the Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Honorary bearers were Bill Johnston, Bob Gagner, Richard Bedor, Mike Morse, Pete Gagner and Gordon Lewis.

The American flag was presented to Stephen's brother, Richard, by James Brouillette representing the Veteran's organizations

Following the service a reception and luncheon was held at the American Legion Hall. Arrangements were by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

JAMES V. CIOFFI

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. James V. Cioffi, age 63, died unexpectedly at his home, Dec. 24, 2002. He was born in St. Albans, son of Chief James and Evelyn (Smail) Cioffi, June 21, 1939.

He married Cecile Lanoue Sept. 29, 1962. He was a graduate of BFA, class of 1958. He served in the United States Air Force. He worked most of his life for IBM, holding numerous positions, before retiring in 1994.

Jim was a member of the St. Albans City Call Firefighters, serving under his father, for many years. He volunteered coaching the Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball Leagues and the SASA Hockey. He also enjoyed outdoor recreation, to include fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Cioffi; his wife of 40 years, Cecile Cioffi; four sons, Mark Cioffi and his wife Sue of Montpelier, Matthew Cioffi and his wife Marie of North Easton, Mass., Luke Cioffi and his wife Michelle of Sheldon, and John Cioffi and his wife Trudy of St. Albans; his grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Tanner, Kyle, Isaac, Cooper, Patrick, and Leo; a sister, Darla Bursey and her husband Hugh of Apache Jct., Arizona; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Chief James. S. Cioffi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., South Burlington, Vt. 05403, or to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

SYLVIA RUTH CHEESEMAN

ST. ALBANS -- Sylvia Ruth Cheeseman, 80, of St. Albans, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born June 18, 1922, in Dannemora, N.Y., the daughter of Lewis and Geneva (Garren) Frenyea.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Morton Emery, who passed away in 1962; her second husband, Arthur Cheeseman, who passed away in May of this year; and one sister, Audrey Myatt.

Sylvia is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, John and Carol Favreau of Champlain, N.Y.; two ladies that she brought up as daughters, Lillian Cookman and her husband Ralph of Champlain, and Lucy Hebert; one brother, Austin Carlton Frenyea of Beekmantown, N.Y.; one sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Janis Gardener of West Chazy, N.Y.; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours. Burial will take place later in the year in St. Mary's Cemetery in Champlain, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain, N.Y.

CARROLL H. WRISLEY SR.

GRAND ISLE -- Carroll H. Wrisley Sr., 84, of East Shore Road, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2002, at his home following a short illness. Carroll was born May 14, 1918, in Chesterfield, N.Y., the son of Clayton and Marion (Mason) Wrisley.

He was employed by the Wassiac State School system, Wassiac, N.Y., where he worked in the Maintenance department for 20 years, retiring in 1980.

On Sept. 10, 1937, he was married to Eileen J. Abair in Addison. She predeceased him on March 31, 1998.

Carroll is survived by his four sons, Carroll Wrisley Jr. of Fort Pierce, Fla., Edward Wrisley and his wife Evelyn of New Bern, N.C., Gordon Wrisley and his wife Barbara of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Joseph Wrisley of Grand Isle. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. His sister, Mertle Strong of Willsboro, N.Y., also survives him.

In addition to being predeceased by his wife Eileen, he was predeceased by his daughter, Joyce Wrisley; his two brothers, Clayton Wrisley Jr. and Kermit Wrisley; and his sister, Bessie James.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton. Burial will follow in the Grand Isle Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

Visiting hours will be held today, Thursday, Dec. 26, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home.
