IRA "MAC" McDONOUGH

Ira "Mac" McDonough died on Dec. 1, 2002, following a lengthy illness. Mac was born in Highgate, the son of William and Addie McDonough. Mac spent his early years on the family farm in Highgate and enjoyed fishing with his Dad and the social gatherings often held at the McDonough farm. His five grandchildren were very special to him and they will always remember the special treats and events he planned for them. He was a great storyteller who provided endless enjoyment with this gift. Until his death, he corresponded by letter or phone with the many friends he had made both in Vermont and in Florida.

THOMAS JAMES McALPINE

SHELDON -- Thomas James McAlpine, age 61, died Thursday morning, Nov. 28, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Nashua, N.H., the son of the late James and Isabel (Riley) McAlpine.

Tom was a 1959 graduate of Nashua High School, a 1961 graduate of East Coast Aero Tech. He was employed at Sikorsky Aircraft in Strattford, Conn. from 1961 to 1971, Polaroid in Boston, Mass. from 1971 to 1975. He then was associated with Central Heating in Burlington from 1975 to 1980, and his last employment was as sales representative with Marshall Distributing of Cass City, MI.

Tom always believed that we should get up in the morning loving our work, and he loved his work with Marshall Distributing, where he was able to comment his passion for motorcycle racing with his love for meeting people. He was an avid gardener and woodsman and loved managing his forest. Tom also took great pleasure in sponsoring and coaching young motorcycle racers.

In his final three years with cancer, Tom did more than most would believe. He never said "Why me?" Instead, he said "Why not!" Why not go ride his annual grueling 500-mile trail bike race in the Colorado Rockies during chemotherapy? Why not give everything he had to muster up the courage and power, during the last months of his life to take his wife 2, 500 miles to Virginia and North Carolina on their motorcycle? Why not just LIVE because every breath we take is a gift, not a right.

Lastly, Tom requested that it be written here in his obituary, to encourage all reading this to inquire about a colonoscopy. Tom saved several friends, including his wife and brother, with this suggestion. In this simple process, if a polyp is found, it is removed during the procedure and all is well. If Tom had had it done years ago, there would not be anyone reading this right now.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judith (Grigas) McAlpine of Sheldon; his daughter, Riley Jennifer McAlpine of Santa Monica, Calif.; his brother and his wife, Richard and Elaine (Fournier) McAlpine of Nashua, N.H.; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Marylen Grigas and her husband Larry Ribbecke of Burlington, Leonard Grigas and his wife Virginia (Waterman) Grigas of Milford, N.H., Linda Harris of Burlington, and Janet Phippard of Balston Spa, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Hudson, N.H.

Friends and relatives may call on the family Saturday from 2 until the hour of the funeral at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

For those who wish, contributions in Tom's memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency -- Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Care Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
