LORETTE M.T. (DESLAURIERS) MASSE

SOUTH HERO -- Lorette M.T. (Deslauriers) Masse, 73, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, Jan. 23., 2003. Lorette was born in Greensboro on Dec. 9, 1929, the daughter of Achille and Florida (Carrier) Deslauriers.

Mrs. Masse was married to Florian "Frenchie" Masse in Greensboro Bend, Vt. in 1953. Lorette was a very giving and caring person. It was not uncommon for Lorette to be seen visiting shut-ins and friends in nursing homes, always doing for others, whether it be baking goods, making house calls with freshly baked goods, or praying for friends and those in need. She was a very active member of the St. Rose of Lime Catholic Church in South Hero, where she was happy doing what ever was needed, whether it be helping on meals for funerals, cleaning the church or taking care of Father Brenan's Vestments.

She was a person of faith and prayer and had a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother. Lorette was very fond of Padre Pio and was a member of the St. Padre Pio Spiritual Children Group. She also enjoyed singing with the Choir of Christian Comfort at St. Rose of Lima. Lorette was a member of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima and was the Sacristan at St. Rose for many years.

Mrs. Masse is survived by her children, Cyrille and his wife Mildred of Lawrenceville, Va., Ivon of Meriden, Conn., Dominic of Grand Isle, and Valerie Cain and her friend Malcolm Palumbo of Shrewsbury. She is also survived by her grandson Christopher Cain; by a brother and sisters, Hermine Boudreau of Hyde Park, Gilles Deslauriers and his wife Gisele of Winooski, Sister Lillian Deslauriers of the Sisters of Providence in Spokane, Wash., Sister Agathe Deslauriers of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart in Winooski, Gisele Thibault and her husband Andre of Burlington, and Jeanne Deslauriers of South Burlington; a sister-in-law, Claire Deslauriers of Sarasota, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband, Florian in 1998; her son-in-law, Roger Cain in 1992; her brothers, Gaston, Marcel, Liboire, Jean-Louis, Andre, and Father Victor Deslauriers. She is also survived by Frenchie's family, Marcel of Craftsbury, Real of Cheshire, Conn., Ronald of Wolcott, Jeanine Morel of Florida, Giselle Whipple of Newport, and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Donald Masse; and sister-in-laws, Theresa Ward and Denise LaCroix.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in South Hero. Burial will be in the family lot in St. Michael's Cemetery in Greensboro Bend on May 3, at 10 a.m. in the spring.

For those who wish, Masses may be offered in Lorette's memory.

Visiting hours will be today, Jan. 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Church Hall at St. Rose of Lima.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home.

JOSEPH E. PETTIT

TACOMA, WASH. -- Mr. Joseph E. Pettit, age 59, died Jan. 14, 2003, in Tacoma, Wash. He served in the U.S. Military for several years and retired in Tacoma. He was married to Frances Elaine Howrigan, daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Maloney) Howrigan of Fairfield.

Besides his loving wife Elaine, he is survived by three daughters, Kathryn A. and her husband Bob Halls, Mary Ellen Pettit, Patricia Pettit-Ralph and her husband Mark Ralph; grandchildren Corey Evans Jr., Elizabeth Anne Ralph, Marika Ralph; his brother, Frederick Pettit; brother-in-law Richard and his wife Kathleen Howrigan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at noon in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Prior to the Mass, a Rosary Service was held in the Church. Visitation was held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18 and 19, in the Gaffney, Cassedy, Allen and Buckley King Funeral Home. Interment followed the Mass in the Tacoma National Cemetery.

LAURA E. HUBBERT

Laura E. Hubbert passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2002, in Colorado. Laura was born in Nebraska on Aug. 27, 1913.

Laura graduated from the University of Nebraska and went on to teach in Nebraska and Colorado. She married Myron Hubbert in 1937. The lived in various parts of the country until they settled in Fairfax, where they lived for over 50 years.

Laura taught music at the Fairfax schools, and was the choir director and organist at the United Church where the Hubberts were members. She was also a member of the Eastern Stars and the Senior Citizens.

She was predeceased by her husband, and two sons. She is survived by two children, Louise Decker and John Hubbert, both of Colorado. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Fairfax later this year.

HELEN VERA (WORKMAN) BROWN SHEPARD

BURLINGTON/CASTLETON -- Helen (Workman) Brown Shepard, age 86, a resident of Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington, passed away Jan. 16, 2003, after a long decline resulting from Alzheimer's Disease.

Mrs. Shepard was a resident of Castleton for 57 years until her health required the special care of Birchwood, where she has been since 1997. The family expresses its deep gratitude to the attending angels there, especially Barbara Klein, Maureen Prendergast, Carmen, Pat Katen, Lisa, Steve, Cheryl, Lincoln, Betty, Ashley, and indeed all the staff of the Special Care Unit, who should all be individually named if space allowed. Their gentle, expert, and loving care eased the difficulty of these past years.

She was born June 16, 1916, at her grandparent's home in Rockingham, Vermont, the daughter of the late William Wellington and Mamie (Lovell) Workman, and grew up in Essex Jct. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1937, and taught for two years in the Richmond Elementary Schools before being named a State Demonstration Teacher at Castleton Normal School (now Castleton State College). In her year of teaching there, she met Harold Moses Brown. They were married on Oct. 5, 1940, in the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction, and made their home in a gracious old house on the Main Street of Castleton, where they raised their two children Sally and Martin. Harold was co-owner of the H.M. Brown and Company Grain Mill, and for many years State Senator for Rutland County. He passed away in May 1965. She married Finley Shepard in December, 1968 and was widowed again in 1970.

Throughout her long and active life she was involved in civic and community works, reviving Castleton Colonial Day in 1947 and taking part in it for 55 years, and serving on the Castleton Library Board for 48 years, many of those years as President. She was a member of the Federated Church and the Castleton Historical Society; was appointed by the Governor to the Vermont State Board of Education in the 1960s; served as President of the Castleton Woman's Club, the Vermont Federation of Women's Clubs, and General Federation of Women's Clubs' New England Conference, and as President of the Vermont Chapter of the American Association of University Women, President of the Vermont Chapter of the American Automobile Association (Triple A). Also, she was founding President of the Rutland County Audubon Society, and President of the Vermont Audubon Council. She was an inspirational speaker, wonderful leader, and hard worker. Her joys were children (children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, to whom she was known as Helma), good books, her friends and family, cooking fabulous meals, birding, and nature. She traveled widely, across the United States many times, to Europe and the Holy Land in the 1950s, to Africa and Ireland in the 1970s.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren; daughter Sarah (Sally) Brown Laughlin and her husband Peter Krusch of Cambridge, and grandson James Laughlin of Burlington; son H. Martin Brown and daughter-in-law Sharon, and grandchildren Heather, Hunter, and Justin of Rutland; her former son-in-law J. David Laughlin of Woodstock; her nieces and nephews and their families, Alicia and Steve Shanks of Essex Jct., Laurie and Joe Malenfant of Colchester, Janith Lockwood and James Draper of South Burlington, Martha Workman and Wayne Phelps of Essex Jct., Geoffery and Sharon Workman of Maine, Bill Workman of Essex Jct., Rick and Elena Workman of Jericho, and John Workman and Giles Hunter of Fairfax; her brother Robert Workman of Florida, and his children Ann, Maureen, Tim, and Bobbie; and her sister-in-law Bette Workman and her children. She was also predeceased by her brothers Bill, Chris, and Dick.

A memorial service will be held at the Castleton Federated Church on Main Street in Castleton on June 21, at 11 a.m. Inurnment will take place following the service at the family plot in Hillside Cemetery (originally part of her husband's grandfather's farm, donated by him to the town for a cemetery).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Castleton Women's Club for the Carriage Restoration Project, c/o Jane Hum, 229 Crystal Heights, Bomoseen, VT 05732.

Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

ROGER LEO COOPER

HIGHGATE FALLS -- Roger Leo Cooper, 63, a lifelong Highgate resident died suddenly, Thursday morning, January 23, 2003, at his Brosseau Road residence.

He was born in Highgate, Aug. 9, 1939, the son of the late Leo R. and Anna Margaret (Boylan) Cooper. He graduated from Highgate High School and on June 18, 1969, was married to the former Elizabeth Voit, who survives him.

Prior to his retirement Roger was employed in sales for Beauregard Equipment of Colchester and in earlier years had been associated with the Union Carbide Corporation of St. Albans and also worked as an operator of heavy equipment.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles Daprato Post 778 of Swanton and American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1, St. Albans.

Roger will always be remembered for his love of nature and the outdoors and spending time with his many friends, hunting, fishing, and playing poker.

In addition to his wife Liz of Highgate Falls, Roger leaves his son, Sergeant Kirk Cooper of the Vermont State Police living in Montgomery; two sisters, Carol Ann Machia and her husband Rodney, and Rosemary St. Pierre and her husband Morris, all of Highgate Center; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Roger was predeceased by his son, Keith Leo Cooper on Nov. 14, 1995; his father, Leo Cooper, Sept. 30, 1994; his mother, Anna Margaret Cooper, April 15, 2000; and his brother, Carlton Cooper on April 3, 2001.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 1 p.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Cooper family lot in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, on Sunday Jan. 26, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

BERNARD J. YOUNG

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass./SWANTON, Vt. -- Bernard Joseph Young, 68 of East Longmeadow, Mass., retired 32-year machinist and foreman of Smith & Wesson Inc. in Springfield, Mass., lost his fight for life on Jan. 1, 2003, after being struck down by a hit and run driver on Nov. 26, 2002.

Bernard, better known as "Red, " leaves his loving wife of 49 years, the former Ruth Elaine "Jones" Young, formerly of St. Albans. Bernard leaves four children, the oldest a son, Rene Joseph and his wife Concetta "Verteramo" Young of East Longmeadow, Mass., his oldest daughter, Deborah McNamee and her husband Earl of Feeding Hills, youngest daughter, Brenda Moore of Brimfield, youngest son, Michael Bernard and his wife Shanon "Foley" Young of Woodbridge, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and relatives.

Bernard was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis and Aldina "Santerre" Young; two brothers, Roland and Donald Young; and a sister, Elcine Gagne.

Bernard will forever be remembered for his love of the outdoors at his camp in St. Albans Bay where he loved boating, fishing and cooking for his family, relatives and many friends. He was also an avid Bingo player. He was a loving husband and father and a very special friend of our family.

Bernard will be missed by all, but we will never forget you and we believe you are in a better place and hope that one day will all meet again. Our hearts go out to all the family. PAULINE J. KELLEY

ST. ALBANS -- Pauline J. Kelley, age 72, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the home of her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Alan King. She was born March 23, 1930, in Bakersfield, daughter of the late Elwin and Jennie (Miner) Kelley.

Her employments included time at Smugglers Notch Inn, in Jeffersonville, Union Consumer Carbide Products, and her last employment was for over 40 years at Fonda Container, Corp. She was a member of the United People Workers Union 345, the Franklin County Senior Citizens and a very active volunteer worker at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Auxiliary Unit 758.

Besides her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Alan King of Fletcher, she is survived by her granddaughter, Nichole King of Fletcher and grandson Jonathan King of St. Albans; her brother, Roger and sister-in-law Charmaine Kelley of Wolcott; sister-in-law Jean Kelley, R.N. of St. Albans; two brothers-in-law, Felix Barisano of Simsbury, Conn. and Walter Zavalick of Bristol, Conn.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and very close friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her twin brother Paul Kelley; and sisters Ruth Zavalick and Lorraine Barisano.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 7 p.m. until the service time Friday evening.

In her memory, memorials may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, Box 576, Waterbury, Vt. 05676.
