MARJORIE I. "MIDGE" MASSE

SWANTON/MALONE, N.Y. -- Marjorie I. "Midge" Masse, 79, of 447 Swanton Road, St. Albans, and formerly of Malone, N.Y., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She had been a patient there since Feb. 1.

Born in Huntingdon, Quebec on Nov. 4, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Elsie Antoine McCracken. She graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone in 1941.

On Jan. 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to Rudolph M. Anweiler at the First Congregational Church in Malone. He predeceased her on July 28, 1973. In June of 1975, she was united in marriage to William Masse in St. Albans. He predeceased her on June 11, 1985.

Many years ago she was employed by F. W. Woolworth and J.J. Newbury and later for Tru-Stitch Footwear, all in Malone. She later worked as a bookkeeper for McCracken Livestock Sales in Chazy, N.Y., and St. Albans for many years. She retired in 2001.

She was a charter member of the Malone Amvets Auxiliary, and a member of the St. Albans Women of the Moose. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and collecting angels.

In addition to her endless giving and loving ways to all who knew her, she has been a wonderful mother, who is loved dearly and will be missed deeply by all of us.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Terrance J. and Marjorie Anweiler of New Hartford, N.Y., and Rudy and Sharon Anweiler of St. Albans; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Robert McCaffrey of Rome, N.Y., and Lynda and Daniel McCarthy of Sterling, Va.; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Diane McCracken of Dover, Del., and Maurice and Vivian McCracken of St. Albans, and Jean McCracken of Pennsylvania; one sister, Laura Adams, of New Port Richey, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents and her two husbands, she was predeceased by one brother, Melvin McCracken, and one sister in infancy.

Calling hours will be Friday from noon until 2 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone, N.Y. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend John Werley officiating. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery in Malone in the spring.

Donations may be made in her memory to either the American Lung or Heart Association.

A buffet reception will be held at her late home in St. Albans in the late afternoon.

Arrangements were by the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home, located in Malone, N.Y.

BARRY A. RICE

FRANKLIN -- Barry A. Rice, age 21, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in Franklin, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born in St. Albans April 29, 1981, the son of Bonnie Donima and Kenneth Rice.

Barry helped Jeff Clark in Franklin plowing snow and as a mechanic during the winter, and couldn't wait for spring to go back to work for Mark St. Pierre. He enjoyed working and driving truck with his grandfather and uncles and was always willing to help people out. He also enjoyed hanging out with his cousin, Jon Stout, snowmobiling, camping and listening to loud music. He especially loved his daughter, Morraisa.

He is survived by his daughter, Morraisa Rose of Hartford, Conn.; his mother, Bonnie Domina of Enosburg Falls; his step-father, Mark Rainville of Franklin; his father, Kenneth Rice of Toronto, Ont.; one sister, Brandi Domina of Swanton; four brothers, Brandon and Bradley Rainville, both of Franklin, Blake and Beau Rainville, both of Enosburg Falls; his grandparents, Archie and Rose Anne (Martin) Domina of Sheldon and Lucien and Monique (Bouchard) Rainville of Franklin; his nephew, Dartanyon of Swanton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will be next spring in the Montgomery Center Cemetery.

ROGER DALE UNWIN

SWANTON -- Roger D. Unwin, 44, a lifelong resident of Swanton, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 2003, at his home on Covey Drive in Swanton Town.

Roger was born in Swanton, March 16, 1958, the son of Leonard L. and the late, Marion (Tatro) Unwin. He attended Swanton Elementary School and graduated from Missisquoi Valley Union High School.

Roger was a small engine and automobile mechanic for many years prior to his retirement.

In addition to his father, Leonard L. Unwin of Swanton, Roger leaves two brothers, Allen and his wife Lynda Unwin of St. Albans and Mark Unwin of Franklin, N.H. He also leaves a very dear and close friend, Theresa Menard of Swanton, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Roger was predeceased by his mother, Marion Unwin on April 11, 1986.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend, pastor of the Highgate United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Unwin family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday afternoon from 1 until the hour of the funeral.

Gifts in Roger's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association of Vermont, 77 Hegeman Avenue, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

BETTY SWEENEY

Born Feb. 26, 1921, in Milton, the daughter of Ira and Ethel ( Wells ) Everest and raised on the family farm in Milton, Betty was graduated from Milton High School in 1939. She chose early retirement from the Milton Creamery in the late sixties to pursue life's more relaxing offerings of fishing, hunting, care of horses and being with her many friends. Betty was an accomplished carpenter having built her "camp" on Lake Champlain, her barns, and finally in 1976 she built her home on land which was within several hundred feet of where she was born and raised. She spent the last 30 years living there with her dear friend Marie whom she knew since early adulthood.

Betty's strengths included a quiet trust in the goodness of people, and an exceptional talent for expressing a typical goodness of people, and an exceptional talent for expressing "droll Vermont Humor." She brought careful attention and caring to so many with whom she associated. In the later years she displayed undaunted courage to live her life as normal as possible despite many aging physical incapacities.

Betty enjoyed her daily visits to the village, with her special friends at the Milton Diner, Hannaford and Marty Branch's store. She would return home each day with the comment, "They all love to tease me." Yes, her sense of humor and quiet repartee were much cherished by her family and friends alike.

Betty is survived by her brother Robert Lee Everest of Milton; her nieces, Amy Morway of Grand Isle, and Laurie Ann Scott and her husband Richard of Milton; her sister-in-law, Phyllis M. Everest of Milton; her grand-nieces, Alicia Scott, Beth Morway and Beth's daughters Hayley and Christina; her grand-nephews, Kyle and his wife Jill Morway and their daughter Alyssa, and grand-nephews Kevin Morway and Jason Scott. She is also survived by her dear friend Marie - Ann O'Conner.

She was predeceased by her brother, Herb Everest.

Visiting hours will be held at the home of Phyllis Everest on Everest Road in Milton on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at your convenience.

Memorials in Betty's memory may be made to either the Milton Rescue, P.O. Box 15, Milton, Vt. 05468 or to the United Church of Milton, P.O. Box 107, Milton, Vt.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. in the United Church of Milton on Main Street in Milton.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

DANIEL WHEDON

MONTGOMERY/PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. -- Mr. Daniel Clark Whedon, age 87, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in the Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans, following a brief illness. Dan Whedon came from a Mayflower-descended New England family.

He was born in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y. on Jan. 11, 1916, son of the late Burt and Marion (Steele) Whedon.

Dan was home educated until the age of 12. He attended Brooklyn's Poly Prep High School and received his B.A. from Amherst College. After graduation he headed West and tried his hand at writing scripts for radio and the movies.

A Port Washington resident for 56 years, Dan and his wife Aida, who died in 1994, taught art in their private art school to thousands of Port children. The couple was well-known in the 1950s and 1960s for their ceramic and crafts that appeared in prominent galleries, museums and stores such as America House, Sloane's, and George Jensen's. In later years, Aida turned her talents toward etching and Dan experimented with pottery and ceramic sculpture.

Dan's versatility as a craftsman was complimented by his talent as a jazz and rhythm guitarist. He was known for his prickly humor and his ego-deflating irreverence. With the Whedon family's close friends John and Ruth Duffy and Alan and Patti Wile, in 1956 Dan and Aida bought a four-acre island off the Maine coast where they spent their summers until Aida's death.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Susan, a Manhattan Puppeteer and opera singer, and his son, Tony, a writer and professor of writing and literature at Johnson State College in Vermont; Tony's wife, Suzanne Whedon; and two grandchildren, Daniel and Amelia Whedon.

Beside his wife, Aida, and his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Roger and John Whedon and a sister Marjorie Walsh.

Funeral services, with burial to follow in East Cemetery in Litchfield, Conn., will be at the convenience of his family. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

THOMAS GREENIA

ST. ALBANS/RUTLAND - Mr. Thomas Greenia, age 76, died early Monday morning, Feb. 3, 2003, in the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Rutland. He had been a resident at the nursing home for the past week.

Prior to the nursing home stay, Tom was a resident of St. Albans for many years and for the past few years was residing at the Loretta Home in Rutland.

Tom was born in St. Albans on June 26, 1926, son of the late Frank and Melvina (Pilbin) Greenia. For over 25 years, Tom was a milk delivery person for the H.P. Hood Company.

Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II participating in battles in the Asiatic Pacific Theater at Saipan and Okinawa. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1 of St. Albans.

Tom was married to Catherine Pilbin, who predeceased him April 28, 1982.

His survivors include his children and their spouses, Larry and Marie Greenia of Dallas, Texas, Sandra and Doug Robtoy of St. Albans, Brian and Anne Greenia of Brownsville, Brad and Pat of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Bernard, and his wife, Marion Greenia of Georgia; a sister, Joanne, and her husband Robert, Lafond of Springfield, Mass.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Father Leonidas Laroche, pastor of St. Mary's Church, will officiate. Friend may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 10 a.m. until the service time Friday morning. Burial will be in the Greenia family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

MARJORIE HAUCK

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Marjorie Hauck, age 91, died Saturday evening, Feb. 1, 2003, in Redstone Villa. She was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late William and Frances (Rose) Beddie, September 10, 1911.

She was a secretary for the Prudential Insurance for 10 years, and a Probation Officer for the Union County Government in New Jersey for 20 years. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Sandwood Presbyterian Church, both in Scotch Plains, N.J.

She is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Rasmussen and her husband Edward of Larimy, Wyo., John Hauck and his wife Debbie of St. Albans, and Dorothy Taney of Alexandria, N.J., five grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents and a brother James Beddie.

A funeral service will be held in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at 4 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 3 p.m. until the time of the funeral. Interment will be in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be made in lieu of floral tributes to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements are Entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
