DONALD E. BERNARD

GEORGIA -- Mr. Donald E. Bernard, age 79, died Saturday evening, Sept. 13, 2003, at his home in Georgia, following a courageous battle with an aggressive cancer.

He was born in Morrisville, Sept. 6, 1924, to the late John and Anna (LeBlanc) Bernard. Donald graduated from Burlington High School in 1942. During his lifetime, Donald worked at numerous jobs including salesman for McNess Products and Rodd Roofing. He also drove truck for Leader Evaporator and R. L. Vallee, and worked as a substitute mail carrier.

For much of his life Don remained associated with dairy farming in the Franklin County Area. He handled grain at E.W. Bailey and Worthmore Feeds, and he also worked at several area farms. He owned and operated the "Horseshoe Farm" in Georgia with his wife, Pat, and three sons. In 1986 he retired from the St. Albans Co-Op Creamery.

Our father was a people person - and after a lifetime of contact with the public, he could go almost anywhere and meet someone he knew. He always relished in telling and re-telling stories of the many interesting people and situations he encountered over the years.

Donald was a member of St. Mary's Parish, the Retired Teamsters chapter and The Northeast Fiddlers Association. Donald always enjoyed outdoor work at home, cutting or splitting wood, working on his garden and caring for his lawn. n fact, our father worked very hard with his hands at most of the jobs he ever had - and we always marveled at the huge "Bear Paw" hands he had to show for it. As we grew older we also discovered Dad had a great ear for music and that these same huge hands could turn out a fine tune on the fiddle. A chance attendance at a Northwest Fiddlers meet around 1980 reignited an interest in fiddle music that lasted the remainder of his life and provided Don and Pat's retirement years with countless hours of enjoyment. Friday night jam sessions with his devoted wife, Pat, at the piano and other fiddling friends for nearly 20 years will long be remembered.

On Aug. 23, 1952, Donald married Patricia M. Berthiaume. For over 48 years they remained in love, constant companions, raising three sons, sharing the joys and facing the tragedies together until Pat's death on April 23, 2001. Family and friends meant everything to Don and Pat. They took particular delight and tremendous effort in making each and every holiday, birthday, or milestone in our lives, was a special event. In later years they took the same delight in the grandchildren; watching them grow, teaching them music and passing on family traditions; always very proud and with unending love. We have many happy memories of our parents/grandparents; we love them and will always miss them, we are thankful in the knowledge they are reunited, and in Gods hands.

He is survived by three sons, Randall and his wife, Gail, of Jonesville, Timothy of Georgia, John and his wife, Karen, of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Jim Fulcher of Washington, Iowa, Samantha, Donald and Kenneth Bernard of St. Albans; three sisters-in-law, Marilyn Berthiaume of St. Albans, Maxine Thompson of St. Joseph, Mo., and Barbara Bernard of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Besides his parents and his loving wife, Pat, he was predeceased by two infant daughters, Donna Lynn in 1959 and Patty Ann in 1965; an infant brother Raymond; his brothers Omer in 1978, Peter in 1984; and his sisters Alice Hovey in 1991 and Antionette Lyons in 1992.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, St. Albans. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in the Bernard family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
