GHISLAINE MARIE PELOQUIN PRAIRIE

SWANTON -- Mrs. Ghislaine Marie Peloquin Prairie, born July 16, 1920, passed away on Oct. 20, 2003. One of 11 children of Marie and Zoel Peloquin, she was born in Weedon, Quebec and married Leon S. Prairie in 1945. After having had two of her seven children in Montreal, she moved to Alburg and built and established her home in Swanton in 1956. Since 2002 she had found happiness living under the care of all the angels who worked at St. Joseph's in Richford.

Ghislaine loved all children. In caring for her own she made, cleaned and repaired many of their clothes, tended and preserved a huge garden of fruits and vegetables for the long winter months. She had a passion for knitting and not only does every one of her children and grandchildren have at least one of her knitted blankets, but she also knitted bandages for lepers in foreign countries. After her own children were grown and gone, Ghislaine took great pleasure in helping the neighborhood and Catholic parish children with their lessons of French and faith and also belonged to the Nativity Parish Ladies of St. Anne. In later years her greatest pleasure became watching children slide down the small hill in her front yard from her kitchen window. Should anyone of those children not have mittens or a hat, she would invite them in for a treat and dig out a pair of her own knitted hats or mittens to keep them warm. Ghislaine was indeed one of those rare angels of the earth who was always smiling with a kind word or gesture.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leon, on April 2003, and her daughter, Diane, in 1949. She leaves behind her sister Rejeanne and her brother Conrad; along with her six surviving children: Claude Prairie and his spouse, Janet, of Ste. Hubert Quebec, Lynda Manter and her spouse, Frank, of West Acton, Mass., Roland Prairie and his spouse, Maryellen, of New Port, Dianne Prairie of Copperas Cove Texas, Mark Prairie and his spouse, Dale, of Westford and Renee Brown and her spouse, Dale, of Georgia; her 10 grandchildren, Danny, Claudine Brian, Ian, Darren Alexander, Nicholas, Todd, Sabra and Lauren; her six great-grandchildren, Nika, Mary, Jane, Dusty, Chelsea and Cassiddy; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and acquaintances that who she, in one way or another, touched deeply throughout her 83 years on this earth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton Village. Father David Kiyingi will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Prairie family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.
