ADELAIDE "ANDY" (ANDERSEN) MAQUERA

GRISWOLD, Conn. -- Adelaide "Andy" (Andersen) Maquera, 75, of Brewster Road in Griswold, Conn., died Tuesday evening at Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center. Born in Westerly, R.I. on Aug. 28, 1928, she was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Ellis) Andersen.

A graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1947, she then graduated from Backus School of Nursing in the Class of 1950. Andy then attended Mount Sinai School of Nursing in New York, N.Y., and remained in the Neuro Nursing Surgery Department as a supervisor of Guggenheim Pavilion for about three years.

In 1958 she returned to Norwich, Conn. as a registered nurse and night supervisory at Wm. W. Backus Hospital, where she remained for 33 years, retiring in 1992, to be able to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Andy was a member of the Backus Alumni Association.

Surviving is her daughter, Florence LaPorte of Lisbon, Conn.; her son, Andre F. Maquera of Fairfield, Vt.; four grandchildren, Chonel LaPorte, Aspen Maquera, Jordan LaPorte, and Mingo Maquera; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Norwich, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 35 Wawecus Hill Road, Norwich, Conn., 06360, or to Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center, 93 West Town Street, Norwich, Conn. 06360.

NICHOLAS ADAM AGARD

BURLINGTON - Nicholas A. Agard, 20, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Burlington on May 24, 1983, the son of John and Stephanie (Janowski) Agard. He attended schools in Burlington, receiving his GED in 2001.

Nicholas' passion was cooking, and he had hopes of one day attending culinary school. He formerly worked at the Penny Cluse Cafe under the guidance and direction of his mentor and special friend, Charles Reeves. He was presently employed at Henry's Diner. Fishing was Nicholas' first love, which he often did on his days off, and second was hunting, which he did with his dad. He also enjoyed staying on the family property in Pottersville, N.Y.

Nicholas is survived by his parents, John and Stephanie Agard of West Rutland; a sister Lindsay Agard of West Rutland; a brother, John Matthew Agard of Pottersville; four aunts, Christina Lyle of Cornish, N.H., Mary Campbell of Manchester, Conn., Virginia Raymond of Grafton, and Barbara St. Cyr of Middlegrove, N.Y.; his dog, Sasha; and his very special friend, Tracy. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Joseph and Arlene Janowski, and Robert and Mildred Agard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. in the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Nicholas' parents, for a charity to be determined at a later time, at 465 Pine Hill Road, West Rutland, Vt. 05777.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

ROBERT W. "BOBBY" PATNODE

BURLINGTON - Robert "Bobby" Patnode, 23, of Burlington died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, from injuries suffered in an auto accident in St. Albans. Bobby was born in Burlington on Sept. 26, 1980, the son of Robert and Dawn (Blondin) Patnode.

Bobby attended Burlington schools and while at Burlington High School he played on the soccer team, was a member of the wrestling team, and was state champion in his division. He was employed by Eric's Excavating. He was a member of St. Mark parish. Bobby was the sunshine of our life and had a caring spirit for others. He was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to go hunting and fishing. He enjoyed going on hunting trips in Maine with his father, grandfather and his uncle Rod. He also enjoyed touring with the Grateful Dead and playing the drums.

Bobby is survived by his parents, Robert and Dawn; his sister, Jordana M. Patnode and her fiance, Adam T. Trahan; and his love and best friend, Maria T. Trahan, all of Burlington; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Annette Patnode of Colchester; his paternal great-grandmother, Arietta Patnode of Essex Junction; his uncles and aunts, Mike and Marilyn Blondin, Pat and Pam Blondin, and Fred and Joan Blondin, all of Colchester, John Blondin of Westerly, R.I., Elizabeth and John O'Brien, Mary Lariviere and David, and Judy and Rob Hemingway, all of Burlington, Wendy and Punk Blow of South Burlington, and Rod Patnode of Burlington; numerous cousins and close friends; and his cherished pets, Lena and Kitty. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, W. John and Elizabeth Blondin, and an uncle, Randy Patnode.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Roman Catholic Church with interment to follow in New Mount Calvary Cemetery.

For those who wish, donations in Bobby's memory may be made to Vermont Fish and Game Department, 103 S. Main St., Waterbury, Vt. 05676.

Visiting hours will he held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington.

MICHAEL MARTIN

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Michael Martin, age 56, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 15, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 27, 1947, in Winooski, son of Clifford J. and Bernice (Shepard) Martin. He worked as a carpenter and electrician for the Carpentry Union. He enjoyed traveling the country and was an avid Denver Bronco's fan. He was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and a member of the American Legion, Post 1.

He is survived by his daughter Rachel Bilodeau; his mother Bernice Martin; a sister, Melody Martin; and his girlfriend, Donna Root, all of St. Albans. He is also survived by the "Walnut Street Crew;" several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Clifford J. Martin, on Sept. 28, 2001; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 Sunday evening. Interment will follow in the Martin family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ROGER A. CAPLES

ZEPHERHILLS, Fla./RICHFORD -- Roger A. Caples, age 62, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at his home following a brief illness with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

He was born June 15, 1941, in Old Town, Maine, the son of Lida (Jewett) Caples and the late Arnold Caples.

Roger grew up in Richford and was a graduate of the Richford High School. Following high school, Roger entered the U.S. Army and was based in Germany during the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the service he became a plumber, working for his uncle, Martin Jewett in Brattleboro, Vt. He later joined the Pipefitters and Plumbers Union 64 in Northampton, Mass. He continued working for the union until his declining health forced him to stop. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Eagles Club, all in Brattleboro.

He is survived by his mother, Lida Caples, of Richford; two daughters and their husbands, Lori and Jeff Shaw of Bernardston, Mass., and Jennifer and Sean O'Connell of Colrain, Mass.; two sons, Clayton Caples and his wife, Jennifer, of Greenfield, Mass., and Joseph Caples of Rutland, Vt.; five grandchildren, Kyle Nartowicz, Jocelyn Rickey, Jasmine and Nelly O'Connell, and Lydia Caples; four sisters, Cheryl Patterson and her husband, Stephen, of Richford, Lenna Caples and her dear friend Brenda Smith of Hinsdale, N.H., Nancy Marston and her husband, Mark, of Richford, Vt., and Kelly Sanborn and her husband, Steven, of Costa Rica; two brothers and their wives, Charles and Lisa Caples of Rochester, N.Y., and Martin and Kristi Caples of Anderson, Ind.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, Oct. 17, 2003, at 10 at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Graveside services will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.

Visiting hours will be held Friday morning from 8:45 to 9:45 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford, Vt.

BARBARA "BOBBIE" BEAN

GEORGIA -- Barbara "Bobbie" Bean, 73, a resident of Stonebridge Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 13, 2003, in her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Bobbie was born in St. Albans, July 1, 1930, the daughter of the late John and Iola (Bell) Mullen. She attended Swanton schools graduating from Swanton High School in the Class of 1948. She married Robert F. Brown in 1955 and traveled extensively as an Air Force wife and mother until her return to Vermont in 1972. On Nov. 5, 1977, she married Roger D. Bean, who survives her.

Bobbie was a faithful attendee of The Church of the Rock and was involved in many Bible studies and other fellowship groups as well as participating in the Mothers of Pre Schoolers Program. In the community Bobbie volunteered many hours and served on the board of directors for the Franklin County Humane Society. She also served as a counselor of the Alcohol Information and Referral Services based in Burlington and worked for the St. Albans Chamber of Commerce. In earlier years she had been associated with the former Union Carbide Corporation of St. Albans.

Bobbie had a very special love and devotion for her only grandchild, Abigail Ledoux, and participated with Abigail in all of her many school and outside activities. She will continue to be remembered for the courage, faith, and dignity exemplified during her four and a half year struggle with cancer.

In addition to her husband, Roger, of 26 years, Bobbie leaves two daughters, Melody Brown Wilson and her husband, Jim Wilson, of Northfield, and Tammy Brown and her partner, John Poulin, and a granddaughter, Abigail Ledoux, all of Georgia. Also surviving are two sisters, Joyce Comings of St. Albans Bay and Maxine Finelli of Swanton; her mother-in-law, Theresa Bean, of Roxbury; four brothers-in-law, William Bean and his wife, Sherry, Anthony Bean, Christopher Bean and Dana Bean and his wife, Michelle, and a sister-in-law, Germaine Morse and husband, Gary, all of Northfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Dorcas Donaldson and Ramona Donaldson Lawrence, predeceased her.

A Celebration of Life for all family and friends will take place Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. from The Church of The Rock, Vermont Route 104, St. Albans Town. The Reverend Roland Ludlam will officiate. A luncheon reception will immediately follow in the church fellowship hall.

Private interment will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family. At Bobbie's request there will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers gifts in her memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton.

WENDY KAYE HILL

AUSTIN, TEXAS/ISLE LA MOTTE, VT -- Wendy Kaye Hill, of Austin, Texas, and formerly of Isle La Motte, Vt., died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

Wendy was born in Burlington on March 17, 1971, the daughter of Marjorie and William Hill. She attended schools in Richmond and Jericho, and graduated from Northeast Clinton High School in Champlain, N.Y. where she took particular interest in the Harvard Model United Nations program. Wendy took this interest to the University of Vermont, which furthered her interests in politics and resolving conflicts. While attending college Wendy worked for Senator Leahy's Montpelier Office. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS degree in Political Science, and went on to work for the Maximus Corporation helping low-income families with their health insurance needs.

Wendy left Vermont for Texas in 1997, and met her Life Partner, Karen "KT" Tharp. After five years together Wendy and KT celebrated a private commitment ceremony June 11, 2003. Though their time together was cut tragically short, it was full of love. Wendy's other loves included literature, music, photography, camping, hunting, and fishing. Wendy was a voracious reader, which inspired her to her own creative writing. Though separated by the miles, Wendy's care, concern, and compassion for her family in Vermont was unshakable, and we will all miss her planned November trip back to the area.

Wendy is survived by her Life Partner, KT, of Austin, Texas; her parents, Marjorie and William Hill of Isle La Motte, Vt.; her brother, Bill, and his wife, Karen, of Ware, Mass.; Uncles Gerald Burke and wife, Sylvia, of Las Cruces, N.M. and Richard Hill and Donna Bourgeois of Isle La Motte; Aunts Marie and husband, Roy Johansen, of Fresno, Calif., Shirley and husband, Jerry Firestone, of San Jose, Calif., Deborah Hill of Waltham Mass. and Isle La Motte, Vt. and Evanthia Hill of Isle La Motte, Vt.; niece Madisyn Hill; nephews Kyle and Ethan Hill; as well as many cousins.

We will all sadly miss her spirit, her kindness, her compassion, and her love.

Kidder Memorial Home of Swanton, Vt. is in charge of arrangements. There will be a service celebrating Wendy's life at the Old Stone Church in Isle La Motte on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at 1 in the afternoon with the Reverend Deborah Laporte officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers remembrances in Wendy's name may be made to the Isle La Motte Public Library, 2238 Main Street, Isle La Motte, Vt. 05463.

JEANNE D'ARC TURCOTTE

RICHFORD -- Jeanne D'Arc Turcotte, age 79, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 10, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born March 2, 1924, in LaBaie, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of the late Ernest and Cecile (Cote) Cote.

She graduated from Nicolet Convent in Nicolet, Quebec with a teaching degree; she then taught grades 1-6 for three years at St. Bridgette, Quebec. She married Florian Turcotte on July 5, 1945. They have resided in Richford for the last 44 years where she was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

She was employed at sewing factories in Richford and Enosburg Falls and at the hockey stick factory in Richford. She also worked at the Richford High School Library where she had such a great time with the staff and students. She also loved working along side her husband.

She is survived by her husband, Florian Turcotte, of Richford; four sons and their wives, Cyrille and Brenda Turcotte of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Michael and Gina Turcotte of Tampa, Fla., Paul and RuthAnne Turcotte of Columbus, Mo., and Daniel and Debra Turcotte of Richford; five daughters, Helene Turcotte and her companion Richard Baillargeon of St. Albans, Micheline Beauregard and Huguette Turcotte, both of San Diego, Calif., Pauline Donaldson and her husband, Peter, of Sarnia, Ontario, and Linda Lafontaine and her husband, Dennis, of Richford; 19 grandchildren, Michele, Tony, John, James, Andrew, Jason, Sarah, JulieAnna, Ann Marie, Travis, Joanie, Marie, Joanne, Jennifer, Sophia, Gregory, Carrie, Amanda, and Hannah; 13 great-grandchildren; eight brothers, sisters, Mrs. Rolland (Claire) Cote, Gilbert Cote, Laurent Cote, Charles Cote, Mrs. Marius (Antonin) LeClerc, Jean-Noel Cote, Armand Cote, and Mrs. Andre (Gisele) Proulx; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Andre and Raymond Turcotte; and three brothers, Ange Albert Cote, Rene Cote, and Jacque Cote.

Funeral services were held today, Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial.

Visiting hours were held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.
